Families who cook together can win $15,000 grand prize & school cafeteria makeovers

The UNCLE BEN’S® Brand, the number-one selling brand of rice in the United States, today announced the second annual Ben’s Beginners™ Cooking Contest. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT,  parents with children in grades K-8 can submit home videos of their families’ preparing a rice-based dish and discussing their experience cooking together, for the chance to win $15,000 cash, an appearance on the “Rachael Ray Show” and a $30,000 cafeteria makeover for their child’s school.

Families can visit through October 6, 2013 to submit videos, find kid-friendly recipe ideas, cooking tips and official contest rules.

The Ben’s Beginners™ Cooking Contest was born of a passion to inspire healthy beginnings in life by encouraging parents and kids to cook together. “We believe parents and children in the kitchen together helps establish healthy habits at an early age and strengthens the family unit as a whole,” said Tim Snyder, vice president of marketing, Mars Food US, the parent company of the UNCLE BEN’S® Brand. “When families cook together, everybody wins.”

In addition to the grand prize winner, three finalists will receive $5,000 cash, an appearance on the “Rachael Ray Show” and a $10,000 cafeteria makeover for their schools. Additionally, the three schools with the most video submissions in their school size category will also receive $30,000 cafeteria makeovers. More information on the contest can be found at

The Aquarium of the Pacific is announcing the birth of two Magellanic penguin chicks. The penguins hatched at the Aquarium to first-time parents Floyd and Roxy, residents of the Aquarium’s June Keyes Penguin Habitat. The one-month-old chicks are currently being cared for behind the scenes at the Aquarium and will be on public view when they join the other birds in the penguin habitat later this summer. In the meantime, the chicks can be seen via webcam from the Aquarium of the Pacific’s website. The Penguin Cam is courtesy of, the philanthropic multimedia arm of the Annenberg Foundation.

Magellanic penguins are a temperate species native to the coasts of Argentina and Chile in South America. It takes between 38 and 43 days of incubation before a Magellanic penguin egg will hatch. The chicks hatch with their eyes closed, and they are able to open their eyes about a week later. Magellanic penguin parents take turns incubating the eggs on the nest and feeding and raising the chicks after they hatch. The chicks fledge, or replace their downy newborn feathers with water-tight adult feathers, after about 90 days. The Aquarium’s penguin chicks are expected to fledge in August and join their parents and the other penguins on exhibit in the June Keyes Penguin Habitat.

WHEN:           Starting Tuesday, July 30, 2013 / Penguin chick webcam (available at )

The chicks will be added to the June Keyes Penguin Habitat sometime in August 2013.
