October’s Pet Obesity Awareness Month Helpful tips from our friends at Bil-Jac!

A study conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) indicates 53 percent of adult dogs are classified as overweight or obese by their veterinarian. According to Dr. Ernie Ward, APOP founder, “The most distressing finding in this year’s study was the fact that more pet owners are unaware their pet is overweight.”

Some breeds only need to gain a few pounds to be considered obese in human terms. In other words, four extra pounds on a Pomeranian equates to 50 extra pounds on the average 5’4 female! Imagine going to the doctor and weighing an 50 extra pounds! Your doctor would immediately suggest a change in diet along with more physical activity. Make your portions smaller.  Cut out the ice cream sundaes and french fries. Make sure you get your heart rate up a couple hours a week.

This chart shows how a few extra pounds on a dog translates to a comparable weight gain in a human.

Weight chart for dogs

* Based on AKC recommendations for healthy weight for each dog breed.
**Based on a healthy weight for a 5’4 Female of 130 pounds as noted by
+ Based on a healthy weight for a 5’9 Male of 150 pounds as noted by

Some helpful tips from our friends at Bil-Jac:

Instead of giving your dog a treat every time he does a trick or does his business, mix in some verbal praise. Or split a treat in half, so you can give those treats over a longer period of time.  Or use a smaller treat to begin with, like Bil-Jac Little Jac treats.  Praise him with more time together and a game of fetch or a nice long walk. Most dogs get just as excited for a play session as they do for a treat.

If you really want to see your dog reach a healthy weight range, try a reduced fat dog food such as Bil-Jac Reduced Fat Formula. Bil-Jac Reduced Fat has 30% less fat than Bil-Jac Select Adult, and unlike other reduced fat foods, dogs love the real chicken taste.

Help your dogs stay healthy by helping them maintain a healthy weight throughout their lifetime.

I received a sample of Bil-Jac Reduced Fat Formula and it is a hit with our dogs! I like that it has no fillers and that it is a reduced fat formula. My dogs love the taste!

THE LAURIE BERKNER BAND PLAYS SUPERHERO First Album Of Brand-New Berkner Songs In Eight Years Was Released on SEPTEMBER 23rd

Eight years coming, and it’s almost here!  The Laurie Berkner Band, authentic superstars of kids’ music, proudly announces the September 23rd release of Superhero, the highly anticipated first full album since 2008 loaded with all-new songs by beloved children’s musician Laurie Berkner.

Jam-packed with 21 freshly composed Laurie Berkner originals plus two “bonus” tracks, Superhero is indeed the album Laurie’s fans have been waiting for. With music ranging from quiet, a capella finger plays to get-up-and-dance full band anthems, this is Laurie Berkner at her absolute best.

Says Laurie Berkner, “I wrote Superhero thinking about many things that I found fun as a kid, and I’m so thrilled to have such wonderful guests to share that fun, including superstar crown prince of reggae,Ziggy Marley, super musical yogini Kira Willey, and our own superbassman, Brady Rymer, who gets a special slot up front in addition to his regular vocal and instrumental contributions as a member of The Laurie Berkner Band.

Superhero soars through a spectrum of musical styles, including ’60s pop, rootsy rock, lullabies, reggae, Latin, and more.  As fans have come to expect, all of Laurie Berkner’s songs on Superhero speak to kids without talking down to them, through imaginative lyrics that both enchant and empower.

Laurie explains, “To me, Superhero is about self-empowerment — being our best selves and discovering the superhero in all of us.”

Brimming with contemporary edge and energy, Superhero leaps into action with a single bound, taking flight with the title track’s splendid horn line and Laurie Berkner’s exuberant vocals.  “Superhero” has all the earmarks of a Laurie Berkner blockbuster:  a powerhouse vocal showpiece that offers plenty of contrast, uncluttered instrumental and vocal textures, tremendous dance energy, and an empowering, joyful message for kids and grownups alike.

Selected highlights — in an album abounding with great moments — include the Caribbean flavored “My My Marisol,” featuring 5-time Grammy® winner Ziggy Marley. Laurie’s daughter, Lucy Mueller, charms listeners by singing with her mom on “Elephant In There,” a story-song that offers a cure for imaginary internal elephants. Superhero comes to an emphatically empowering close with the ultimate superhero message in the shape of an eternally positive “Yes!”

A former preschool teacher by day and indie rocker by night, Laurie Berkner started marketing her music more than fifteen years ago from her living room on her own label, Two Tomatoes Records.  She is now widely recognized as a pioneer in the “kindie” music genre and was crowned “the undisputed queen of kindie rock” by USA TodayThe Wall Street Journal noted, “Her music is distinctive because it speaks to kids without talking down to them, charming youngsters without boring grown-ups.”

Superhero is available wherever favorite albums are sold, at, and at all digital retailers, including iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, and more.
This is one your young kids will love! The music is just so lively and fun!~SoCal City Kids.

Cherry Pie is Pet of the Week!

Cherry Pie isn’t a dog. She’s a doggie. She’s all sweet filling and no crust, and staff and volunteers have fallen madly in love with her. Cherry Pie came in as a stray and was never claimed. She’s a 10-year-old German shepherd mix, but she’s a senior like Betty White is a senior— full of curiosity and playfulness. Later, though, it’s snuggling and affection. She’d rather have praise than treats! Meet Cherry Pie at Long Beach Animal Care Services on the shelter side of the P.D. Pitchford Animal Village, 7700 E. Spring St., Long Beach, (562) 570-PETS.
