The next two books are part of a series and great for ages 9-14.

GINL_TheProdigalssmassss    GITL Cavern of Promise

You may remember that I featured the first book in this series: Giants in the Land Book One: The Way of Things by Clark Burbidge.

The next two books in the series are now available!

About Book Two: The Prodigals

Book Two of the Giants in the Land Trilogy follows Thomas, as a much older man now serving as the Land’s Forest Ward and two of his grandchildren (seventeen-year-old Tommy and thirteen-year-old Rose). Thomas, Tommy, and a band of lost prodigals are placed on a dangerous path toward destiny or destruction. Though they are unprepared, they are all that stands between hope for the future and loss of all they hold dear.

The Prodigals continues the story of Giants in the Land a few years after book one left off. This time the focus is on family; the immediate family made by generations and then the family that is made by where you live with your friends and neighbors. What makes us giants? Not choosing the easy way out, standing up for what we believe in and what is right and our dedication to our family.

We received a copy of this one and it is action-packed and great for middle-school readers. My son really enjoys the adventure in this series.

We also received Book Three and it truly is a must-read!

About Book Three: The Cavern of Promise

Thomas and his giant companion have disappeared. At the mercy of the evil king of Westland, in great peril, and with no hope for escape, Thomas faces an impossible test for survival. Book Three caps this award-winning trilogy with a danger-ridden triple quest: save Thomas, redeem a lost people, and reverse the land’s painful slide toward destruction. Can help be found in a mythical cave at the far edge of the world? Whispered legends speak of a ferocious tribe, fearsome obstacles, and fabled treasure. Join Thomas and his companions under an uneasy truce, risking all to seek the source of redemption―the Cavern of Promise―in a journey that could bring deliverance . . . or doom.

You can purchase Book Two and Book Three on Amazon.com.

Self Disclosure: I received free copies of the above books to facilitate this post.

Jeff & Paige Mighty Wolf A Musical Trip into the Wild ...

_Jeff_&_Paige_Mighty_Wolf_-_Album_Cover_300dpi.

Award-winning children’s entertainers and Colorado family favorites Jeff & Page are poised to take center stage on the national scene with their fifth kid-friendly exploration of science and nature, Mighty Wolf,  released on November 20.

Winner of the prestigious Parents’ Choice® and Creative Child Magazine Awards, Jeff & Paige have perfected a playful performance style that combines the duo’s vivid storytelling and first-rate musical abilities to capture their love of the outdoors and respect for ecology.

Wrote one enthusiastic parent, “They are also wildly creative, funny, and goofy, with a wholesome goodness that brings kids, families, and communities together through their music and shows.”

Within the setting of a family hiking expedition, Mighty Wolf features songs that touch upon such topics as insect migration, Arctic adaptations, keystone species, ladybug ecology, spider anatomy, lightning safety, scavengers, nature appreciation, ungulates, and the Appalachian Trail, interspersed with colorful, informative narrative.

From Mighty Wolf’s title track, which doubles as an a cappella tribute toJeff & Paige’s son Wolf and is structured like a Renaissance canzonetta, to “The Great Monarch Migration,” a graceful acoustic song about a butterfly’s life cycle, Mighty Wolf is fully committed to its message, yet consistently maintains top-notch musical standards.  Album highlights include a big vocal number with a great dance beat, “Black Widow,” which provides plenty of opportunities for kids to get dizzy by spinning in circles, “Triple Rainbow,” which just might become the latest and most ridiculous kids’ dance craze, “Grandma Gatewood,” an ode to the first woman ever to hike the Appalachian Trail, and “Dead and Delicious,” a real showstopper about roadkill, sung by a hungry raven!  Listeners will note influences ranging from Primus, Ween, and Pink Floyd to The Beatles and Boards of Canada.

The husband-and-wife team of Jeff & Paige met in graduate school at the Audubon Expedition Institute, where both were studying Environmental Education.  After receiving their Master of Science degrees, Jeff Kagan and Paige Doughty decided to make the stage their science classroom and music-loving families their students.  Based in Boulder, Colorado, they’ve released four albums and played well over 600 eco-friendly shows since hitting the boards with their first performance in 2007.

I received a copy of this CD and love how fun the music is! I highly recommend for younger kids!

Previous Jeff & Paige albums include Get Outdoors (2013), 21st Century Energy Superheroes (2011), Songs from the Trail (2009), andRocky Mountain Tunes for Rocky Mountain Kids (2007).

College Care Packages With Budgeting Lessons is a Must this Holiday Season!

C1949_103_VV_New_Gift_Box_2013_Wrap_Front_50_Red_v5

How wonderfully quiet the house has been — no dirty dishes in sight, no piles of shoes to trip over in the doorway, no laundry to fold — just peace and quiet to be had! But suddenly, the silence, the lack of chores, the absence of the little annoyances you’ve grown so accustomed to are just too much. You are officially an empty nester!

With the first semester of college in full-swing, many parents are coming to terms that their kids are well on their way to adulthood.  Given this is generally the first time these kids have been away for an extended period of time exploring new surroundings, making new friends; they have probably been calling home and checking-in sparingly.

Instead of bombarding their new found independence with “I miss you” calls, texts and emails, why not surprise them with a care package filled with one of the most valuable things to college freshmen, money!

Sending a pre-paid card like OneVanilla, in a care package is a great option for parents to treat their kids, as well as offering a safer alternative to sending cash. They also give college kids money management training wheels!  Pre-paid cards offer most of the benefits of a payment card product but parents can rest easy knowing their college student will not rack up long-term debt or expensive overdraft charges.

I received a pre-paid OneVanilla card and I love how easy it is to use!  I highly recommend this holiday season as a gift idea especially for College students!
