New Partners Join the Fun at Mud Mania: A Celebration of Adobe

Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site announced, today, that two new partners are joining them for their popular annual summer event, Mud Mania: A Celebration of Adobe on Sunday, August, 16th. In addition to making real adobe bricks, constructing a mini-adobe home, and competing in mud relay races, staff from the El Dorado Nature Center and Signal Hill Petroleum will be on hand to provide new experiences for the hundreds of children and parents who attend.

Stefanie Gillett, Communications Specialist for Signal Hill Petroleum, explained that the company’s staff will be demonstrating how oil is found, extracted, and processed. “The oil industry uses many resources and scientific techniques to better understand the complex geology of the Earth’s crust,” she said. “We appreciate the opportunity to educate our youth, with a hands on approach, about how petroleum is a huge and necessary part of our everyday lives.”

Meaghan O’Neill, Supervising Park Naturalist for the City’s El Dorado Nature Center, was very excited to be invited to participate in Mud Mania. “We will be having a dirt exploration table, and be speaking with the visitors about the importance of soil to plants and animals,” she explained. “We will have two exploration bins filled with dirt, leaves and compost for guests to dig through and find the tiny critters that live in it, as well as books and educational materials on bugs and other decomposers that help create soil.”

Mud Mania: A Celebration of Adobe, is taking place on Sunday, August 16 from 12:30-4:30 p.m.. Admission is $7 for adults, and $5 for children ages 4-12. Kids 3 and under are free. Food will be available for purchase from the B&R Old Fashioned Burgers food truck.

Guests at Mud Mania are required to park in the overflow lot across from our entrance or on the street; carpooling is desirable.  No more than six children per adult, please.  Shoes are required, except in the mud pit, and guests are encouraged to wear old clothes and bring a towel plus a change of attire for the ride home. “De-mudding” stations will also be available for limited clean up; showers will not be available.

The next item would be great for the Golfer in the family!

Sight Ball Image   Sight Ball with Putter

Sight Ball (www.sightball.com) a one of a kind “On Ball” golf training and alignment aide is now available for purchase.  The announcement was made by young entrepreneur Harry Briggs, the creator of Sight Ball and the company’s Founder and President.

Briggs, an avid golfer and industry employee with eight years of on course experience noticed that there were no golf training aides that were actual golf balls, except for simple putting alignment lines. “I figured there should be something on the actual ball to help your game,” Briggs said. “This ball helps with a golfer’s stance, focus and accuracy.” Briggs added that Sight Ball can be used to help with tee shots as well as a player’s short game and putting and can be used on a golf course whereas most golf training aides cannot.

Sight Ball has six sights, or targets, four of which are used to help the golfer to correctly align themselves with the ball. One points in the desired direction of the ball, one points upward toward the golfer’s face as they look down, another at the feet to gauge proper stance, and the last lines up with the club at the back of the ball.

The intention is for a golfer using the ball during practice to begin by pointing a sight toward the target and one face up toward the golfer. The golfer also looks at a sight pointing at his or her feet to get the correct stance and then lines up a club with a sight in the back before swinging.

Briggs spent more than a year developing the first Sight Ball prototype. He then took it to the Washburn University Small Business Development Center for professional business development assistance. “They helped me with product design and production, Briggs said.

It would take another year of research and development to create the final Sight Ball design or Method; the six sighted golf ball training aid. Further testing indicated that the Sights lined up on the ball actually did help golfers with focus, accuracy, and their stance; an ideal “in-play” and training aid. It was after the research, development, and patenting the “Method” that the Sight Ball business was ready to go this past winter.

Sight Balls are now available on the company’s website, www.sightball.com. A six pack of Sight Balls retails for $14.95 with a bucket of Sight Balls, 36, retailing for $69.95. Briggs is working on expanding Sight Ball distribution to major golf retailers and green grass pro shops. “One of my goals is to get the “Sight Ball Method” on all top golf ball brands, says Briggs. Currently the Sight Ball Method is available on Top Flite balls.

I received a sample and sadly have to admit that I am not much of a golfer. But, I did have a friend try this one out for me and she said she was impressed with it and how well it worked for her. She uses it for practice quite often and says it has improved her game. She highly recommends it to anyone who plays golf!

The next one is a Must-Have for Moms and even Dads!

The summer sun can be pretty intense, especially mid-day during the spring and summer months. Sitting by the pool or near any body of water can further intensify the sun’s rays.

While basking in the sun may make you feel happy and relaxed, it may also make you squint, especially if you’re not wearing UV protective sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses is a “beauty must.”  A wide-brim summer hat is also a good idea to keep the sun from shining directly into your eyes.

Rev_B&L_white

A day in the sun, even just watching a tennis match or beach volleyball, can also make your eyes feel tired. A nap may help, but here’s a better idea . . . the Bausch + Lomb THERA°PEARL® Eye Mask. Itcan quickly help your tired eyes look and feel refreshed. This unique eye mask that may be used cold contains hundreds of tiny pearls of gel that contour to the shape of your face, delivering soothing relief from “beauty fatigue,” that may result from a hot, humid day and strong sunshine.

This must-have beauty essential measures 9 inches by 2.75 inches, so it takes up virtually no room in the fridge or freezer. It features a comfortable band to help keep it in place. The Bausch + LombTHERA°PEARL® Eye Mask should be applied to skin or closed eyelids for no more than the doctor recommended time of 20 delicious minutes. Use it cold to help you get cooling relief quickly, leaving you ready for whatever the moonlit night has in store.

I received a sample of this one and I love it! It’s small and easily fits in the freezer and it really is a Must-Have for the humid weather days we have been having! A few minutes using this one before bed and I am ready to go to sleep!  It retails for $9.99 and is available on Amazon and at Target, Walgreens,Rite Aid, Kroeger, Ahold, Meijer, Harris Teeter and Publix.

CAUTION: For external use only. Do not use on infants. Do not ingest contents. Do not use for purposes other than intended. Check with your doctor before use on broken, irritated, highly sensitive or insensitive skin. Use only under adult supervision. Always test pack temperature prior to application. Overheating or prolonged application may cause injury to person, including burns. Heating beyond suggested time may damage or destroy THERA°PEARL pack.

Summer is here! This one is super easy to use and it works great! I like that it is portable and it is very kid-friendly! And, to top it off..it is even magnetic so you can stick it on the BBQ or anywhere else you  may want to keep it. It is quite affordable too! Retails for $19.99.

If you’re concerned about bigger jobs, try the magic Opener Extreme, which combines all of the benefits of the original magic Opener and the added benefit of being able to open large pull-tab food cans (i.e. pet food, soups and sauces). It retails for $24.99 at www.magicopener.com.

Over 8,000lbs of Bacon Served Up at 2nd Annual Big Bite Bacon Fest at The Queen Mary

The Big Bite Bacon Fest returned to The Queen Mary for a second year on August 1-2 with more bacon infused delicacies and craft beer tastings than imaginable firmly earning its place as the West Coast’s largest bacon festival. Thousands of bacon-loving event-goers sampled over 8,000lbs of pork during three tasting sessions across two days of bacon filled fun and fellowship. The event raised $10,000 for America’s Veterans with charity partner Team Red, White and Blue (Team RWB) to assist in enriching the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity.

More than 50 local restaurants and chefs offered their own unique spin on the main ingredient – bacon! Offerings spanned breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and even some bacon inspired beverages. A few of the most popular and creative bacon dishes included Dia De Los Puercos’ “Hog Pocket”, Whole Foods Market, Long Beach “Cherry Bomb Meatball” stuffed with jalapeno bacon, gouda cheese and chipotle seasonings, The Red Leprechaun’s “Bacon & French Toast” bread pudding and The Bacon Babe’s dark chocolate bacon tarts with cinnamon whiskey buttercream.

Severin Stone & the Richeeze Truck took home the People’s Choice Award for their bacon mac ‘n’ cheese slider. The cast and crew of Alt 98.7 FM’s top rated morning show, The Woody Show, joined the festival to select the Critic’s Choice Award winner. After much bacon sampling, the show decided on Chef Nathaniel Nguyen of the Prince & Pantry and his popular “Millionaire Bacon Bar” as the lucky winner.  The Critic’s Choice Award also includes a “Golden Ticket” invitation to compete for Bacon World Championship and $10,000 at the annual World Food Championships in Kissimmee, Florida, November 3-10, 2015.

More than 40 craft breweries and distilleries including Absolution, Angel City Brewing, ACE Cider, Angry Orchard, Bacon Vodka, Bootlegger’s Brewery, Deep Eddy Vodka, Lagunitas Brewing, Samuel Adams, Shock Top, Sierra Nevada and Hard Rock Café with their Twist and Shout Shake with Guinness, Spiced Rum and bacon!

VIP bacon lovers enjoyed early access to the festival, exclusive bacon sampling with chefs and vendors only serving the VIP area, and a gift box, courtesy of Bundt’s on Melrose, with a maple bacon mini Bundt cake… a take home bacon night-cap.

Festivalgoers wore their stretchy pants and squeezed in a little exercise between tastings of all of the delicious bacon items to enjoy games of Pork Ladder Toss, Bacon Bags, Bacon Bungee Run, Bacon Maze, and live music on the main stage. KFI’s The Fork Report host, Neil Saavedra, joined the event this year and broadcast the radio show live from bacon central. Bacon purveyors stopped by his booth to offer samplings and talk live on-air about their bacon offerings and the festival.

“The Big Bite Bacon chefs and restaurant partners did an amazing job of showcasing all of the unique ways bacon can come to life in the kitchen,” commented Mark Entner, Chief Bacon Officer at Big Bite Events. “Their bacon inspired offerings were outstanding and we were thrilled to not only welcome back the bacon loving community to the Queen Mary but to send them home satisfied beyond their expectations!”

Our pup loves Fifi & Fido Beefy Jerky Treats!

caa9a5ee26d0f71f44feef2779b041ecd6b3b55b_1

I like that these treats are made in the USA. They are also Gluten Free and I feel safer giving them to our pup. They are stick form and our pup absolutely loves them! They seem to be fresh and if you have a smaller dog, they can easily be broken up in smaller pieces. We have a medium size puppy and so we don’t need to do that.. One stick is perfect for him! It was tough to take a photo since he runs with one and gobbles it up quickly! I was able to get one photo! I also like that they contain more natural ingredients such as sweet potatoes. They seem to be much more natural than many other treats on the market.

Hot and Spicy Food Day August 19th

This Hot and Spicy Food Day, hot means healthy! On August 19th, give your taste buds a kick and your body a boost! Here are 5 reasons you shouldn’t skimp on the heat with Tandoor Chef:

  1. Weight Loss: Studies show that the main compound in chilies, called capsaicin, has a thermogenic effect and may cause the body to burn more calories and boost metabolism.

Heat up! Lamb Vindaloo.

  1. Heart Health:Studies show that cultures that eat the spiciest foods have much lower incidence of heart attack and stroke. It could be because chili peppers help to reduce the damaging effects of bad cholesterol while capsaicin helps to fight inflammation.

Heat up! Vegetable Pad Thai.

  1. Cancer Prevention:Some studies suggest that capsaicin has the ability to kill some cancer and leukemic cells. Another spice, turmeric, may slow the spread of cancer and growth of tumors.

Heat up! Balanced Vegetarian Palak Paneer.

  1. Lower Blood Pressure:Vitamins A and C strengthen the heart muscle walls, and spicy heat can increase blood flow throughout your body.

Heat up! Balanced Vegetarian Kofta Curry.

  1. Boost Your Mood:Spicy foods boost production of feel-good hormones, such as serotonin, easing depression and stress.

Heat up! Malai Kofta.

Introducing Olay Active Botanicals!

Refreshing Gel Cleansersmall      Moisturizing Day LotionsmallMoisturizing Tonersmall

I have a new favorite line up of skin products from Olay! These truly are my new favorites! Olay Active Botanicals leave my skin feeling fresh, clean and hydrated!  A first for Olay skincare in the U.S., all products in the new Active Botanicals contain extracts of snow mushroom. I have to admit that I have never heard of the benefits of this but I found this rather interesting! Used for thousands of years by Chinese women to help keep skin moist, soft and pliable, this natural ingredient can hold up to 500x its weight in water, making it one of the most effective botanicals to provide and maintain skin hydration.

My favorite is the Refreshing Gel Cleanser! I love how just a little bit foams up and cleans my combination skin. Sometimes I have a difficult time finding the right cleanser because of my combination skin but this one works great! It works fantastic on my dry areas but also works great on the oily areas. My skin over all feels more hydrated too! Retails for $5.99, which is a great price for this one!

The Moisturizing Toner would be my second favorite! I love that this one is 99% alcohol-free and I use this once in the morning and once at night. It preps your skin before using the moisturizer and my skin feels really clean after using this one! Retails for $14.99.

There is also the Moisturizing Day Lotion and I like how light-weight this one is and love that it doesn’t feel greasy on my face. I use it in the morning and my face feels softer all day long. It seems to work well under makeup too. Retails for $14.99.

Intensive Night Creamsmall      Overnight Moisture Masksmall

The last two products in the line up are the Intensive Night Cream and the Overnight Moisture Mask. The Intensive Night Cream features a snow mushroom hydra complex that provides skin with up to 24 hours of hydration. I love how gentle this one is and my skin feels really soft after I use it. Retails for $14.99. The Overnight Moisture Mask actually would be my third favorite! It is an oil-free, gel-cream formula. This mask actually stays on your face and absorbs into your skin as you sleep. I use this one twice a week (as suggested) instead of the Intensive Night Cream. I love it! Retails for $14.99.

I know my skin loves all these products because I can tell that my skin is a lot less dry, and much more hydrated.

All products are available at Target locations nationwide and Target.com.
