How to Plan a Family Friendly Day on the San Diego Waterfront

A family day on the San Diego waterfront sounds simple enough to plan. Pick a few attractions, find somewhere for lunch, walk along the bay, and leave time for the kids to enjoy the water. The trouble usually starts when families try to fit too much into those few hours.

San Diego’s waterfront covers a lot of ground, and places that look close together on a vacation map do not always belong in the same day’s itinerary. Once you account for parking, walking, meals, attraction times, and the occasional tired child, a packed schedule can turn what should be a relaxing day by the bay into a constant rush from one stop to the next.

Families tend to have a better time when they choose one part of the waterfront and give themselves room to enjoy it. Around downtown, that might mean visiting one major attraction, spending time outside along the Embarcadero, stopping for lunch, and getting onto the bay in the afternoon. On another day, you could forget downtown entirely and head to Mission Bay for swimming, paddling, parks, and a much more recreational experience.

There is plenty for children to notice along the way. Boats move constantly through the harbor, aircraft approach the nearby airport, enormous ships sit along the waterfront, and grassy parks provide somewhere to run around when everyone needs a break from structured sightseeing. Parents get the views they came for without having to drag the family through an endless list of attractions.

Choose One Part of the Waterfront Before You Start

San Diego Bay has a long and varied waterfront. The Port of San Diego manages 34 miles of waterfront around the bay, including 23 public parks spread across several communities. The downtown Embarcadero is the section many visitors know best, but it represents only part of what surrounds the water.

For a family visiting San Diego for the first time, the Embarcadero is usually one of the easiest places to begin. Several major attractions are concentrated nearby, the bay is always in view, and you can mix indoor sightseeing with outdoor time without spending half the day moving the car.

Before leaving the hotel, decide which attraction matters most to your family. That should be the anchor for the day. Everything else can be planned around its location rather than choosing several attractions first and then trying to connect them.

The ages and interests of your children should influence that decision. Some kids can happily spend several hours exploring a museum, while younger children may be ready for fresh air after an hour. Teenagers may care less about playgrounds and more about interesting food, photographs, boats, or getting onto the water. A realistic plan takes those differences into account instead of assuming the whole family will want to move at the same pace.

Start With Your Biggest Attraction While Everyone Has Energy

If you are staying around the downtown waterfront, morning is a sensible time for the most structured part of the day.

The USS Midway Museum and the Maritime Museum of San Diego are two of the best known attractions along this stretch of the harbor. Families interested in ships, aircraft, naval history, or maritime history could spend a substantial amount of time at either one. Trying to give both a thorough visit on the same day, especially with younger children, can make the morning feel rushed.

Choose the one that best matches your family’s interests and let the visit take as long as it needs to take. If everyone finishes earlier than expected, you have gained free time rather than created a problem.

There is also plenty to see outside the museums. Walking along the Embarcadero puts children close to an active harbor where sightseeing vessels, working boats, recreational craft, and historic ships all share the waterfront. Even the walk between stops has enough movement to hold a child’s attention for a while.

Once the museum visit is over, the rest of the day can be much looser. Lunch, a park break, time on the bay, or an easy walk can follow without another long indoor visit immediately afterward.

Build in Time When Nobody Has to Sightsee

Adults can stand beside the bay and admire the view for quite a while. Most children have a shorter relationship with scenic overlooks. They might watch a boat for a minute, ask a question about it, and then immediately start looking for somewhere to move.

That is why the waterfront parks are so useful during a family day.

Embarcadero Marina Park North covers about 8.5 acres and includes open green space, waterfront promenades, picnic tables, restrooms, drinking fountains, bike facilities, and areas where families can simply sit for a while. Embarcadero Marina Park South, near the Convention Center and The Rady Shell, has additional waterfront space along with basketball courts, exercise stations, picnic areas, restrooms, and a fishing pier.

Neither park needs to become another attraction on the itinerary. Children can move around after spending time indoors, parents can sit down or reorganize whatever they are carrying, and everyone gets a break from lines, exhibits, and scheduled activities.

Parents rarely put park time on the itinerary, but an hour with nowhere else to be can make the afternoon much easier. If the kids are happy watching boats or running around on the grass, there is little reason to rush them somewhere else.

Keep Lunch Close to Whatever Comes Next

San Diego has enough good restaurants that it is easy to overthink lunch. On a family waterfront day, location and timing often matter more than finding the most talked about restaurant in town.

If you are staying around the central waterfront, there are options around the Embarcadero and Seaport Village, along with restaurants in nearby downtown areas. Pick somewhere that makes sense for the next part of the day rather than sending everyone across town because a particular restaurant appeared on a travel list.

Try to eat before the children reach the point where every decision becomes difficult. A few snacks in the family bag are useful even when lunch is already planned, especially if you encounter a wait or spend longer than expected at the morning attraction.

Lunch is also a good time to see how everyone is doing before committing to the afternoon plan. If the kids still have plenty of energy, continue with what you had planned. If the morning was tiring, there is nothing wrong with dropping a minor stop and choosing something easier.

Spend Part of the Afternoon on the Bay

After a morning of walking, an afternoon on the water can change the pace without bringing the sightseeing to an end.

From a boat, children still have plenty to watch. The downtown skyline shifts as you move across the bay, sailboats pass in different directions, Coronado sits across the water, and larger vessels make the scale of the harbor much easier to understand. Parents also get a chance to sit down for a while instead of leading the family through another long walking route.

The right outing depends on your children. Before booking, check the trip length, departure location, restroom situation, shade, food and drink rules, and any age requirements that may apply. Those practical details can matter much more to a family than how many landmarks appear on a tour description.

Families comparing options for a san diego bay tour may come across local operators such as Tiki Time Bay Tours, which runs public and private outings on San Diego Bay. Its current FAQ also lists discounted rates for children. It is one of several ways to get onto the bay, so compare the length, schedule, departure point, and current policies of different trips before deciding which one suits your family.

A boat trip often works well after lunch, especially if the morning involves a lot of walking. Once you are back on land, you can see how much energy everyone has left before making any further plans.

Give Kids Something to Look For

San Diego Bay already provides plenty of entertainment if children know where to direct their attention.

Young kids can count sailboats, watch for seabirds, look for aircraft approaching San Diego International Airport, or see how many different kinds of boats they can identify. Older children might become interested in the Navy presence, historic ships, commercial activity around the harbor, or how different the skyline looks from various points along the water.

You do not need to turn this into a formal scavenger hunt. Ask which boat looks fastest, see who spots the Coronado Bridge first, or let the kids guess where a vessel might be heading. A few simple questions can keep children interested without turning the walk into another organized activity.

Decide Whether Coronado Belongs in This Day

Coronado is close enough to downtown that visitors often assume they should automatically add it to a waterfront itinerary. Sometimes that works beautifully. Sometimes it creates an extra journey that the family did not really need.

The ferry is one way to cross San Diego Bay without driving across the bridge, and the waterfront around Coronado Ferry Landing provides views back toward downtown. Coronado Tidelands Park is another useful family stop, with open waterfront space, a playground, a small beach, picnic areas, and a scenic bike path that runs along the waterfront.

If your family wants to explore Coronado’s beaches, shops, restaurants, and other attractions properly, consider giving the island its own half day or longer. There is little advantage in racing across the bay simply to say you visited.

Families with a lighter schedule can make Coronado part of the waterfront day, particularly if the ferry itself appeals to the children. Those with a museum, lunch, and a longer boat outing already planned may be happier enjoying the view of Coronado from across the bay and saving the island for another day.

Mission Bay Is a Different Kind of Family Day

San Diego Bay and Mission Bay can sound interchangeable when you are planning from home, but they make for very different family days.

San Diego Bay works especially well for sightseeing. The downtown waterfront, historic ships, harbor activity, Coronado views, and boat outings can all become part of the same day.

Mission Bay is much more recreation focused. Mission Bay Park covers more than 4,200 acres, with roughly equal amounts of land and water and about 27 miles of shoreline. The area has designated swimming areas, beaches, playgrounds, walking and cycling routes, boat docks, launching facilities, and opportunities for boating and other water activities.

Families whose children would rather swim, paddle, ride bikes, play outside, or spend several hours around a beach may prefer Mission Bay to a day of downtown sightseeing.

There is no reason to force both bays into the same itinerary. If you have several days in San Diego, treating them as separate experiences gives everyone more time to enjoy what each area does well. One day can focus on the harbor and city waterfront, while another can be reserved for swimming, paddling, parks, and outdoor recreation around Mission Bay.

Local Tips for a Smoother Family Waterfront Day

A little planning can prevent many of the small frustrations that make sightseeing with children harder than it needs to be. These are the details worth sorting out before you head toward the water:

  • Stay in one general area for several hours. Jumping between the Embarcadero, Mission Bay, Point Loma, and Coronado may look manageable on a map, but parking and travel time quickly add up. Group nearby activities together and save another part of the waterfront for a different day.
  • Choose the attraction that matters most. If the family really wants to visit the USS Midway or spend time on the bay, make that the priority. Keep the rest flexible enough that dropping one smaller stop does not ruin the day.
  • Use parks as actual breaks. Do not fill every open hour with another attraction. A waterfront park gives children space to move and adults somewhere to sit without leaving the area.
  • Check your boat departure point before choosing lunch. San Diego’s waterfront stretches farther than many first time visitors expect. Eating near the next activity can save an unnecessary drive or a rushed walk later.
  • Keep the final few hours flexible. Late afternoon is usually when families discover how much energy everyone really has left. Leave yourself the option of a park, an easy walk, an early dinner, or simply heading back to the hotel.
  • Check current information on the morning of your visit. Attraction hours, boat schedules, waterfront events, parking conditions, and park access can change. A quick check before leaving can save a frustrating detour later.

Good planning should make the day easier, not make the itinerary stricter. If something is going well, give it another half hour. If everyone is tired, move on or call it a day.

Pack for Several Hours Beside the Water

San Diego’s reputation for pleasant weather can make visitors surprisingly casual about preparing for a long day outdoors. Conditions near the water deserve a little more thought.

Sunscreen, hats, drinking water, and comfortable walking shoes are sensible basics. A light layer is also worth carrying, particularly if you will be on a boat or staying around the waterfront later in the day. The temperature may feel comfortable when you leave the hotel, but breeze and shade can make conditions feel different beside the bay.

Parents of younger children may want to pack a simple change of clothes. Drinks spill, children find water when you least expect them to, and an extra shirt or pair of shorts takes up far less space than dealing with an uncomfortable child for the rest of the afternoon.

At the same time, avoid carrying more than you realistically need. Large family bags become annoying when you are walking between attractions, boarding boats, managing a stroller, or trying to keep track of several children. Pack for the likely problems rather than every possible problem.

Think About Parking Before Everyone Is in the Car

Parking rarely makes the exciting part of a vacation plan, but it can have an outsized effect on a family day.

If most of your activities are around the Embarcadero, parking once and exploring the area on foot may be easier than repeatedly returning to the car. Paid parking is available around portions of the waterfront, including near Embarcadero Marina Park North and South, although families should check current rates, hours, and restrictions before relying on a particular lot.

Think about where you will finish the day too. A parking space that feels perfectly convenient in the morning can seem considerably farther away after several hours of walking with a tired child. If you are bringing a stroller, look at the route between parking, your main attraction, lunch, and any boat departure point before you arrive. Cutting out an unnecessary walk can make a noticeable difference later in the afternoon.

Let Different Ages Have Different Versions of the Same Day

A four year old, a teenager, and a grandparent are unlikely to enjoy the waterfront in exactly the same way.

A younger child may be fascinated by boats pulling away from a dock while a teenager cares more about taking photographs or finding somewhere interesting to eat. Parents may want time to appreciate the skyline, while grandparents traveling with the family may prefer regular opportunities to sit down.

The San Diego waterfront works well for this kind of mixed group because activities do not have to be complicated. Some family members can spend longer inside a museum while others enjoy a nearby park. Everyone can meet for lunch and spend the next part of the day together.

Pay attention when something unexpectedly catches a child’s interest. If they want to spend another fifteen minutes watching boats or looking at a historic ship from the promenade, there is usually no reason to hurry them along simply because another minor stop appears on the itinerary.

Make Late Afternoon the Easiest Part of the Day

By late afternoon, even a well planned family day can start to lose momentum. Children are tired, adults have been making decisions for hours, and another major attraction may suddenly sound much less appealing than it did that morning.

Leave this part of the day relatively open.

Seaport Village can be an easy place to walk around if the family still wants to stay near the water. A park works if the kids need room to move. You can find a snack, sit somewhere with a view, head toward an early dinner, or return to the hotel if everyone has had enough.

If the family still has plenty of energy, you can always keep exploring. Leaving an hour or two open simply means you can make that decision based on how everyone feels rather than a schedule you created before the trip.

Children also tend to remember unexpected parts of a vacation. It might be the huge ship they stood beside, a bird diving into the water, a boat moving through the harbor, an ice cream near the waterfront, or half an hour spent playing outside. Leaving some space in the day gives those moments a chance to happen.

Leave a Little of the Waterfront for Next Time

There is enough around San Diego Bay to fill several family outings, and trying to cover all of it in one day usually means spending less time enjoying each place.

For a first visit, one good attraction, some unhurried time along the waterfront, lunch, and an afternoon activity can already make a full day. If Coronado feels like too much, save it. If the kids would rather stay at the park than make another stop, stay at the park. Mission Bay can have its own day instead of becoming another destination to squeeze in before dinner.

By the time you leave, the family may remember only a handful of things clearly. That is fine. A favorite ship, an afternoon on the bay, the view across to Coronado, or an unexpected hour watching boats can say more about a day in San Diego than a long list of attractions everyone was too tired to enjoy.

LACMA Announces SPIRITS Summer Solstice Dance with artist john gerrard and Richie Hawtin June 21

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and artist john gerrard announce the Summer Solstice launch of SPIRITS, a landmark year-long artwork commissioned by LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab and presented on LACMA’s homepage from Winter Solstice 2025 to Winter Solstice 2026, on June 21, 2026. Highlighting LACMA’s opening celebrations for its new David Geffen Galleries, designed by Peter Zumthor, gerrard will present SPIRITS SUMMER SOLSTICE DANCE  a live event on the East West Bank Commons, headlined by a DJ set from acclaimed electronic music pioneer Richie Hawtin. The Summer Solstice event will mark the debut of Peak Oil, an original psychoacoustic composition by john gerrard. The event is free and open to the public with RSVP.

SPIRITS is a rumination on our world’s petroleum addiction, aimed at highlighting the impossible bind we find ourselves in through the over consumption of and reliance on forever chemicals and plastics. A digitally native interactive work, SPIRITS is the the first institutional project in the world to use gaussian splatting, a spatial imaging technology that composes objects from cloud-like points of data. The Summer Solstice (Mediterranean Sea) launch marks the most significant public moment of gerrard’s most expansive year to date, and the first time in LACMA’s history that a major solo exhibition has been presented exclusively in the browser on LACMA’s homepage.

“SPIRITS begins in techne. The making, doing or crafting in ancient Greek – now assigned to technology and the algorithm. Over several years we have called these works up, from the realms of game engine, AI gaussian splat and tone.js composition. They took languages from art sims on the landscape and pushed into the touch screen and the cultural super space of the phone. On June 21 we welcome the extraordinary Richie Hawtin. We welcome thousands of dancers. We enter a form of participatory techno dance intersecting with both very old and very new knowledge, ecologies and power. We shall see where it takes us on solstice night on the beautiful new commons under the David Geffen Galleries at LACMA , LA” — john gerrard

“As a visual artist John has often cited music & rave culture as an important influence as he discovered (and danced to) Techno in the early nineties. As a musician, the structure and subtractive nature of my studio works would have never materialized without a deep interest and analysis of the mid-century works of Rothko, Barnet Newman and Donald Judd. For our collaboration at LACMA, John and I will explore the meeting point between sight & sound, rhythm & repetition and analog vs. digital.” — Richie Hawtin

“Bringing together Richie Hawtin’s pioneering approach to electronic music and john gerrard’s meditation on the world’s oceans, SPIRITS SUMMER SOLSTICE DANCE invites audiences to gather in celebration of the summer solstice, reflecting on the systems and cycles that connect us all.” — Joel Ferree, Art + Technology Lab, LACMA

JOHN GERRARD: SPIRITS
Organized around four bodies of water and four astronomical events, SPIRITS transforms 96 discarded plastic sandals and shoes, collected along the shores of the Pacific, Indian, Mediterranean, and Atlantic oceans, into luminous, interactive virtual sculptures rendered in real time in the browser. These are not images, not video, and not AI, rather they are what gerrard calls image objects: dimensional, world-built sculptures crafted over two years, in which the physics of the earth itself is embedded into each sculptural form. The viewer’s finger is the central cultural actor, each touch transforming the object with overlays of oil slicks, ocean currents and other forms.

The work unfolds in four 24-hour events, each releasing 24 new spirits hour by hour across a single day, tracing a full solar year. SPIRITS is conceived as a full solar wheel, opening and closing on December 21:

  • Winter Solstice (Pacific Ocean): December 21, 2025 — now on view at lacma.org
  • Spring Equinox (Indian Ocean): March 20, 2026 — now on view at lacma.org
  • Summer Solstice (Mediterranean Sea): June 21, 2026 —  preview here
  • Autumn Equinox (Atlantic Ocean): September 22, 2026

SPIRITS
uses WebGL, Babylon.js, Tone.js, and gaussian splatting technologies and is presented by LACMA’s Art + Technology Lab.

THE SPIRITS SUMMER SOLSTICE DANCE: JUNE 21, 2026
On the longest day of the year, SPIRITS SUMMER SOLSTICE DANCE marks both the inflection point where the days shorten and the wheel tips along with the release of the Summer SPIRITS. The activation is meant to connect the core concept of the work: petroleum and our planet at a location adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits, the oldest petroleum deposits in Los Angeles. As the sun wanes, ancient sunlight is also trapped beneath the dancer’s feet. Entirely waste free by design, the activation will span four hours as the day moves from light to dark. Upon entry each guests will receive a prismatic vessel titled UISCE (the Irish word for water, and the root of uisce beatha, “water of life.”) These vessels are intended to be kept as a gift from the artist  and serve as serving ware for refreshments for the evening.

Kicking off SPIRITS SOLSTICE DANCE Jelani and Anastasia Giovanitake the stage, two performers from Los Angeles inherit the SPIRITS world and perform the simulations live on the LED wall as the sun begins to set. At 7:30pm, Richie Hawtinarrives to lead the dance for two and a half hours.Inspired from data generated by Gerrard’s simulations, Hawtin will explore how the visual streams influence elements of his set in real time. Using his unique setup of the analog MODEL 1 mixer and integrated digital systems like Bitwig & Traktor, Hawtin will translate this unique moment into musical expression.

At the four corners of the floor stand four ocean sentinels, monumental sound and lighting towers, each holding one ocean of the world. At the center, a four point mister continuously cools the dancers through the night, each facing each cardinal direction toward its ocean. Dancers fill iridescent vessels from water vats and return to the floor. The event is designed by john gerrard with material care throughout: all surfaces are made from logs gathered from California’s burnt forest landscapes; a commissioned chill-out area features golden, sun-dried aromatic grasses and hay, hand-cut and baled with non-plastic twine. Food and drink are sourced from producers who work with care within post petroleum agriculture.

PEAK OIL
The Summer Solstice event will mark the debut of Peak Oil, an original psychoacoustic composition by john gerrard*. Conceived as a sonic expansion to SPIRITS, Peak Oil will be performed live at LACMA before being given to artists and DJs globally for remixing, with the track seeding into clubs across globally through July and August as the work travels to Silencio Ibiza at the end of June.

The composition extends gerrard’s investigation into petroleum, plasticity, and the material conditions of the contemporary world into the register of sound, adding an auditory dimension to the broader SPIRITS project and its meditation on what we have extracted from the earth and left behind on its shores. Built on dichotic listening, the words “peak oil” moving from one ear to the other at high repetition. The phrase shifts, morphs, becomes something else, then returns.

Superman * Powerful Storytelling, Emotional Depth, Fresh Take On The Iconic Hero

Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

With a fantastic cast of characters supported by amazing performances, there’s never a dull moment in this movie.” Valerie M. comments, “I love the new Superman! It has such a compelling story that kept me at the edge of my seat. I also really love how the story is brought to life with the help of special effects.”  Carter P. adds, “The new Superman movie captivated me with its powerful storytelling, emotional depth, and a fresh, yet faithful, take on the iconic hero that renewed my love for the character.” Spencer C. adds, “I love the film Superman because it is so funny, and full of action. I also love that there are so many sub-plots to follow and they all come together at the end.” Avani M. adds, “Superman is a great superhero movie with a cute dog and beautiful storyline. I love the movie and including Superdog Krypto sealed the deal! I love the mix between action, drama and comedy.” Leo G. wraps it up with, “The film’s message is that being human is not where you are from, it is who you are on the inside, and no one can define it for you. You have to believe in yourself and the good you bring to the world.” See their full reviews below.

Superman By Isabella V., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 14

Superman is a visually stunning and incredibly entertaining movie with great worldbuilding and an investing story. With a fantastic cast of characters supported by amazing performances, there’s never a dull moment in this movie.

The storyline follows Superman (David Corenswet) as he deals with being both a Kryptonian alien and living as Clark Kent on Earth his whole life. He soon finds that what he stands for, truth and justice for all, is questioned by humanity and is taken advantage of by billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).

The CGI in this movie is impeccable, from animals to locations, everything looks so realistic and magical allowing nothing to feel as if it stands out, leaving for an immersive experience. For example, the Fortress of Solitude, the place where Superman resigns, fits extremely well into the surrounding environment of the Arctic. The fighting is also outstandingly well choreographed and very entertaining – all the stunts feel unique and take advantage of the characters’ abilities such as Superman’s ability to fly and shoot laser eyes. Speaking of which, the characters are unbelievably well written and fit perfectly into the plot. Every character exceeds in their attributes, whether it’s the antagonist Lex Luther or Superman, they all feel like real people. The story is also easily understandable to someone like me, who’s never seen anything Superman related. I found the plot points all well explained while not feeling forced. The movie also has remarkable jokes and comedic timing by the cast. There are so many good laughs throughout the film whether from visual gags or spoken lines while not taking away from more serious moments. The music, by David Fleming and John Murphy, gives a grander feeling to fight sequences or sadder feelings to more heartwarming scenes. The music is also astonishingly catchy and nice to listen to on its own. My favorite part has to be the costuming, specifically for the heroes. Everything is so detailed; you can tell that so much thought went into the designs, from the theming to their functionality. I especially enjoyed the hawk girl’s superhero costume.

The film’s message is to appreciate the life you’ve lived and those who’ve supported you through it. Be forewarned that there is some profanity, smoking, and some intense bloody scenes.

I give Superman 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to ages 12 to 18, plus adults. It releases in theaters July 11, 2025.

Superman

By Valerie M., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 12

I love the new Superman! It has such a compelling story that kept me at the edge of my seat. I also really love how the story is brought to life with the help of special effects.

The storyline is about Superman (David Corenswet) being under fire after getting involved in international affairs. When Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) supposedly retrieves the missing second half of the message from his biological parents which instructs Superman to take over the human world, the public goes completely against him. Superman now has to prove he is the kind of person he said he was.

This film really makes you think about everyone’s actions. Superman himself makes mistakes, yet the story shows that what makes him a hero and a human is what he sets out to do. Lex Luthor is truly my new favorite movie villain. His motivations are clear. He is cold and calculating. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants. He lies to the public and gets rid of anyone who gets in his way. The ending really just brings this home. But he has layers and intentions that make you think from time to time that maybe he is trying to help. This movie also brings an interesting take on politics and how social media can affect public perception. People don’t question the message shared by Lex Luthor and don’t hold back on attacking Superman. The film makes you question Superman’s actions. Were they really justified? Should he have done the things he did? He makes mistakes and fails multiple times. When he realizes that this is what makes him human it gives him strength and he prevails. I also adore Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). You can really see her personality and determination in this movie. She doesn’t immediately go praising Superman in her interview, even though they’re secretly dating. When he disappears, she sets out to find him with the help of others. She will stop at nothing to make sure the people she cares for are safe. I love that she plays an important role in this story.

The film’s message is that to be human is to make mistakes but also a reminder to wish for the good of others. Be aware that there is some profanity, making out, lots of fighting and even death, but nothing is bloody or gory.

I give Superman 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to ages 12 to 18, plus adults. It releases in theaters on July 11, 2025.

The new Superman movie captivated me with its powerful storytelling, emotional depth, and a fresh, yet faithful, take on the iconic hero that renewed my love for the character.

The storyline reimagines Clark Kent’s (David Corenswet) journey with a perfect balance of heart, heroism, and humanity. It explores his struggle to find his place in a divided world while staying true to his values and protecting those he loves. When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. Will Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Superman’s four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it’s too late?

Superman delivers a bold and emotionally take on the Man of Steel, blending storytelling with epic superhero spectacle. The film blends intense action with deeply emotional moments, showing not just Superman’s strength but his compassion and vulnerability. The powerful performances, stunning visuals, and a story grounded in hope makes it an unforgettable experience.  David Corenswet is the perfect Superman; he radiates hope, strength, and heroism.  Rachel Brosnahan shines as a sharp, fearless Lois Lane with real chemistry that anchors the film. The supporting cast – Nathan Fillion as a witty Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as a fierce Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi as the brilliant Mister Terrific – adds energy to every scene they appear in. Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is terrifying and brilliant.  Standout scenes like Superman’s emotional heart-to-heart with Pa Kent, and the final showdown with a twisted clone showcase the film’s range from high-stakes action to quiet and powerful moments.  Director James Gunn crafts a movie using warmth, wit, and stunning visuals to redefine Superman for a new generation.

The film’s message is that true strength lies not just in power, but in compassion, integrity, and the courage to do what’s right even when the world doubts you. It emphasizes the importance of hope, belonging, and choosing kindness in a divided and often cynical world. At its core, the film reminds us that being a hero starts with staying true to your values.

I give Superman 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. You can see Superman in theaters beginning July 11, 2025.

Superman

By Spencer C., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 10

I love the film Superman because it is so funny, and full of action. I also love that there are so many sub-plots to follow and they all come together at the end.

The storyline follows the super-hero called Superman (David Corenswet), who is from the planet Krypton. He has to fight battles, save humans, and prove that he is a good person. No one knows his real identity or that he is also Clark Kent. Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) tells the world that Superman is here to rule, not help, by exposing a message from his parents. Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) is Superman’s girlfriend, and has to persevere through challenges to help save her boyfriend.

The acting stands out and the set is amazing. I could tell they were going for a very cold snowy place at the beginning of the movie, and the ice palace coming out from the ground looks super realistic. I believe that David Corenswet was made to play the role of Superman – he brings this role to life and really shows Superman’s various emotions.  My favorite character is the dog Krypto, Superman’s best bud. He is inspired by the director James Gunn’s dog. My favorite part in the movie is when Superman says, “Krypto, get the toy,” and he starts chewing up every robot!

The film’s message is that kindness prevails over everything. Be aware that there is a lot of violence and some bad language in the film.

I rate Superman 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18, plus adults. It releases in theaters on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Superman

By Avani M., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 13

Superman is a great superhero movie with a cute dog and beautiful storyline. I love the movie and including Superdog Krypto sealed the deal! I love the mix between action, drama and comedy.

The story follows Superman (David Corenswet) and his journey of fighting villains while hiding behind his alter ego, reporter Clark Kent. He struggles when a video from his parents is exposed and the world starts to turn on him. Despite all the hate, he works hard to fight the villain, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) while Lex comes up with different ways to cause chaos in Metropolis.

One setting that really stands out to me is Superman’s Fortress of Solitude which we sometimes see when Superman goes into his fortress. The visual effects artists put so much amazing and beautiful detail into it, I wish I could be there. With big shoes to fill, David Corenswet is a great Superman. After being lost and hurt, I can feel the rebuilding of his confidence when he starts believing in himself again. I also feel his fear when he finds out he is not what his parents wanted him to be. Despite being naughty at times, Superdog Krypto provides so much cuteness and we feel how deeply Superman loves him. Nicholas Hoult portrays Lex Luthor’s anger and envy in such a way that it makes me mad. He is very animated and articulate, and uses his facial expressions very well. Rachel Brosnahan lives up to the image of the strong reporter Lois Lane and challenges Superman as a reporter while still staying true to her love for him. Neva Howell and Pruitt Taylor Vince play Ma and Pa Kent respectively as such loving and caring parents. They give some of the best performances in the movie. Skyler Gisondo and Sara Sampaio play Jimmy and Eve with great comedic relief, both of which are important characters to the plot.

There are many messages here. One is that your choices and your actions are what make you who you are. We are also reminded to stay close and true to our values. Once Superman finds out he is not what his birth parents expect him to be, he still stays true to his values and keeps doing good. Another message is that being human is waking up and trying your best. You may make mistakes along the way, but that’s how you learn. It reminds us that we are not always perfect and that it is okay to not be the best at everything. Be aware that there is some profanity used and some creatures and scenes might be scary for younger audiences.

I give Superman 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages to 8 to 18, plus adults. It releases in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Superman
By Leo G., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 12

I enjoyed Superman because it is funny, has great cinematography, and the actors are very good.

The storyline follows the beloved character, Superman (David Corenswet), who grapples with what it means to be an alien while also feeling like a human. He battles against the evil plots of Lex Luther (Nicholas Hoult). At the same time, he works on his relationships with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and his poorly behaved dog, Krypto.

David Corenswet makes an amazing Superman – not only does he look like the Superman we all know and love from the comics, he also plays a strong but sensitive and loving man perfectly. Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane is a modern take on the character, and in a good way. In this film, Lois Lane is a more independent woman than in prior versions of Superman, but she still feels like Lois Lane and I like the new twist to her character. This movie not only has awesome characters but the cinematography is amazing. The lighting is used in very interesting ways; there are subtle changes that reflect Superman’s feelings.  For example, when Superman doubts himself the most, he is in a dark place not only emotionally but visually as well. However, during an interaction with Lex Luther, when Superman’s faith in his own humanity peaks, so much light fills the space that you cannot help but feel happiness for Superman. The viewer also feels happiness throughout many comedic moments in the movie. Krypto, the dog, provides a lot of laughs with his rambunctious behavior. And, a group of meta-humans, referred to as the Justice Gang and led by an unheroic Green Lantern called Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), shows up throughout the movie and keep the audience laughing.

The film’s message is that being human is not where you are from, it is who you are on the inside, and no one can define it for you. You have to believe in yourself and the good you bring to the world.

I give Superman 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18, plus adults.  It releases in theaters starting July 11, 2025.

Summer Time Reading: Books of the Week: June 13th, 2025 for YA, Teens and Young Adults

THE BUSYBODY BOOK CLUB by Freya Sampson (Berkley Trade Paperback Original; on sale May 27, 2025)

They can’t even agree on what to read, so how are they going to solve a murder?

Having recently moved from London to a small Cornish seaside village, Nova Davies started a book club at the local community center, but so far it’s a disaster. The five members disagree on everything, and to make matters worse, a significant sum of money is stolen during one of the meetings, putting the much-loved community center at risk.

Suspicion for the theft falls on book club member Michael, especially when he disappears and a dead body turns up at his house. But the book club has their own theories. Agatha Christie superfan Phyllis is determined to prove Michael’s been framed, while romance reader Arthur believes there’s a mystery woman involved, and teenage sci-fi fan Ash thinks dark forces are at play.

While trying to locate Michael, solve the murder and recover the stolen money, each of them has their own secrets to protect. But despite the danger closing in, they won’t rest until they’ve cracked the case and gotten everyone safe at home with a book, where they belong.

This is a real fun Summer read!

WHAT IF YOU FALL FOR ME FIRST? by G.F. Miller (on sale 6/10/2025).

Sofia has had enough of everyone thinking she’s sooo nice. “Sweet,” “innocent,” and “goody two-shoes” are how her classmates would describe her, but there’s more to her than that. She wants everyone—especially her forever crush, Mark Chen—to see that she has other sides.

To help her level up to Official Cool Girl, Sofia enlists trendy and confident Holden—the guy who everyone else has written off as a total player and a first-class jerk. Under Holden’s guidance, Sofia learns to revamp her style, ride a skateboard, and stand up for herself. At the same time, Holden learns that when he’s alone with Sofia, it’s safe to drop the cool guy act and just be himself.

When their efforts start to pay off, Sofia is faced with a choice. Should she stick with the plan—and risk losing herself in the process—or take a chance on the person everyone says will break her heart?

Easy Fall Mom Hacks and Must-Haves – National Lifestyle Expert, Cheryl Leahy, Offers Top Tips to Make Mom Life Easier

FunkAway is a unique odor elimination solution perfect for kids going back to sports. Whether it’s sports equipment or jerseys – FunkAway’s unique OM Complex™ breaks down odors at the source and eliminates the odor versus covering it up.

With more than 48 million kids (K-12)* returning to school this year and our world opening up again, fall trends indicate 1 in 4 of those kids have already or will return to sporting activity.** While sports provide countless physical and health benefits – health, teamwork, community, discipline – one drawback is the funky odors that come with it. The smelly equipment, clothes and bags can make your home and car unbearable. Cheryl Leahy, lifestyle mom expert, shares some easy mom hacks on how to clean and get funky smells out of sports gear quickly and effectively, a perfect solution for saving time and frustration.

Top 5 Sports Gear Cleaning Hacks

  • Make sure your washer is clean. Periodically run your wash cycle using two cups of white vinegar.
  • Wash your kids’ jerseys inside out. If you wash the jerseys inside out, you’ll avoid wear and tear on any writing or artwork on the uniform.
  • Remove the stinky smells – the first time! Use a max strength laundry booster like FunkAway along with your regular detergent, that breaks down the odors and eliminates them.
  • Get a sports hamper. Buy a hamper for sports-only gear to keep the stink and bacteria into one spot vs. letting it spread to other clothes.
  • Fumigate that smelly bedroom. Lots of times, the clothes don’t make it to the laundry room, they end up hiding in your kid’s room – which can lead to lots of funky smells. Use FunkAway odor eliminating beads to freshen up any stinky room.
  • Don’t forget about the gear that can’t go into the wash! Don’t forget to treat the stains on gear that can’t go into the wash with products like FunkAway Aerosol Spray to prevent odors from taking over your space. Perfect for shin guards, football pads and any other sports gear that needs to be refreshed.

“The versatile OM Complex™ formula in our FunkAway products are essential must-haves this fall as kids are getting back to sports,” says Kyle Bolke, CEO, FunkAway. “This proprietary complex attacks odors on a molecular level, encasing it and eliminating the funky smells. It’s great for parents who are trying to eliminate foul odors from multiple uniforms and gear, allowing them to get the “funk” out by breaking down odor at the core and eradicating it at the source versus covering it up.”

FunkAway has a solution for anything that stinks, including powerful sprays for shoes and gear you can’t put in the wash, a Max Strength Laundry Booster, and supercharged Odor Eliminating Beads that work where others fail. FunkAway offers a family of products for any odor and retail for:

Top Tips to Straighten up Your Home for Last Minute Guests

You are lying on your bed, and suddenly your phone rang, your best friends are coming over to visit you. But there is a problem your house is a mess. We are all put in this situation sometimes, so acting quickly and being creative helps a lot. First stand up from your bed, gear up and start cleaning and organizing the place. You can’t expect to do a detailed clean like in your designated clean-up days, but a faster more convenient one will have to do the trick.

Remove Unnecessary Items

First if needed to some household clearance, remove some items and furniture you think is just too much. This is one of the fastest ways to start cleaning. Open the windows let fresh air come and chase the cigarettes or food odor. If your curtains are dirty or stained just remove them, or if you have spear ones put them on. You have no time for washing them.

Clean Windows

If the windows are dirty, just lower the blinds and you will be ok. Spray air fresheners a good tip is to spray it on the light bulb, and as it heats, it will spread it around the room. Another idea is to turn on the air condition and spray you freshener in, so as the air is circling fresh smell will be transported around the room.

Vacuum the Floor

Get your vacuum cleaner it’s the most crucial arsenal for cleaning. Start vacuuming the floor, if dust is present today vacuums have many adapters just circle between them, and you will do two things with one activity. These things are vacuuming the floor, followed by dust vacuuming from desks, tables, wall sockets, and even some home decorations.

This can do to all rooms, so not just your guest room. Your friends might ask you to visit the kitchen, living room or even your bedroom to check that beautiful king size bed you bragged a bought.

Clean Bathroom

Don’t forget to check your bathroom or bathrooms, do a quick vacuuming and clean the toilet and sink if you have a bathtub or a shower just close the shower curtains. If the floor needs too much cleaning to take some carpet and use it. No one will remove and see what is under it. Take one big garbage bag and start tiding throw everything inside, clean your garbage bins and other excess things you think.

Thorough Checking of Small Things

The first thing your guests see is the entryway, so you door knobs must be wiped down. Take your mattresses, not forget the welcoming one shake them off or vacuum them. Glass needs to be polished and any shoes and clothes removed. Check if the lights are okay, if not change them you want to have functioning bulbs and not sit in the dark. You should use some decorations for a more welcoming entryway, so it looks better.

For the end play some chilling music on your device, do another quick inspection and check if any fishing touches are needed. Wait for the bell to ring and welcome, visitors.

Covered Goods multi-use nursing cover is also a must-buy!

Founder Jamie Yetter, herself a mother of four, faced a common fear that many women have while nursing in public; the fear of being exposed!  This fear often kept her and other nursing mothers searching for a hidden place somewhere. Sometimes, it was impossible to nurse at all.  In researching available nursing cover options on the market, Yetter found none of these options offered the security of optimal privacy.  She designed a nursing cover that would not only offer all over coverage but would also allow for the cover to conveniently convert for use as a scarf, car seat cover and shopping cart cover.  Moms can truly nurse anytime, anywhere!  There is no more fear of being exposed with Covered Goods.

Covered Goods nursing covers allow for mom and baby to nurse comfortably.  The high quality covers are made from an ultra-comfy breathable lightweight and stretchy fabric.  There are no straps, rings, or cords to mess with.  The covers take seconds to put on and take off, and alleviate any worry that baby will kick or pull mom’s cover off.  The flexible neck is also designed to be able to be worn down under one arm to give mom even more freedom when nursing.  An added benefit of the flexible neck allows mom to peek in on baby or to make sure her little one has latched properly.  Covered Goods nursing covers can be folded compactly for storage and they are ideal for traveling with baby.

Covered Goods covers are available online at www.coveredgoods.com and at specialty boutiques and stores across North America.  Recommended retail: $34.99.

Check out a few essentials to get your hands on before strapping your own little “BooginHead” into the stroller for a stroll this Fall! I love these next unique items!

SplatMat:  This protective and fun mat folds down to fit easily in a bag or purse, and is perfect for picnics, parks, beaches, airports, and other public places where you don’t want your little BooginHead touching the floor or ground. And since it’s so easy to clean, SplatMat can go right back home again to the high chair or playroom. ($14.99)

PaciPurse – This one’s for mom! This fashionable, vintage-inspired piece is modeled after the classic and stylish kiss-lock coin purse. Another BooginHead original design layered with function, PaciPurse holds two pacifiers and PaciGrips now, while baby still takes a paci, and can be repurposed later to hold small necessities like cash, cards, makeup, and other personal items. If you’re sick of pacifiers getting covered in grit from the bottom of your bag, you’re gonna love this! ($6.99)

PaciGrips & SippyGrips:  Keep pacifiers, soothers, toys, and teethers close, clean, and ready for baby.  Are you over pacifiers and teethers ending up on the ground? Or does your kiddo get a kick out of playing fetch with a sippy cup?  You need PaciGrip, PaciPals, Bandana Teether Bibs, & so much more.  With patented grip material, universal attachments, and food-grade silicone, BooginHead products will be your little saviors at home and on the go!

Now more than ten years in business, BooginHead products are well-loved by parents everywhere for their unmatched high-quality construction, stylish patterns, versatility, and attractive price.

How about a Teething Mitten? I just think this next product is so clever!

Jodine Boothby launched Gummee glove, the World’s first teething mitten designed solely for babies to wear, in 2012.

However, because of its appeal and success, this has led to a wealth of copycat products reaching parents across the world.

“I have a huge amount of issues concerning Intellectual Property.”  Jodine told us.  “My business was built from absolutely nothing, my husband and I were bankrupt when we started. And it has taken 6 long years of incredibly hard work and many sleepless nights to ensure our Gummee Range met all the required standards.  Our research, development and quality control processes are rigourous.”

“Sadly we’ve found in the last few months we have been getting complaints from customers regarding inferior products because they have purchased them, believing that they have purchased a genuine Gummee glove.  Copycats within the industry have not only copied our designs but also copied our trademark and logo – despite the thousands we invested to protect both.”

“These issues have been very damaging to my business, and we are now at breaking point after years and years of dedicated struggle on behalf of parents everywhere to bring a safe and reliable product to the shelves.”

“The ease with which these often foreign companies (and particularly Chinese in origin) can just list on third party platforms is astonishing and it is happening to so many British brands. I have set up the Nursery Industry Productpreneur Association, which started as a Facebook group and is made up of over 40 British Nursery brands, all ran by hard working parents who launched genuine, authentic and original products. We have banded together to try and present a united front, and we have created social media platforms (NIPA Baby) so that we can show our direct customers who we are, and how the products came to be. We are hoping this will be an amazing platform for us to use to present our Original products to an established, informed following.”

How can parents’ avoid accidentally buying inferior untested products?

“They need to shop directly from small businesses and brands and really do their homework on what they buy for their babies especially! Independent shops are also very good places to buy from as the people that run them are often just as passionate and knowledgeable about the brands they stock as the brand owner themselves. A lot of the products are sent into the country without proof of testing on them, or information about where they are manufactured, or traceability details in case there needs to be a product recall.  I think that is most frightening…..be careful what you buy for your little ones and just do some research on the company first.   We have spent over £50k on safety testing because it is THE most important thing to us here at Gummee.”

I think that reading and listening to music are so very important for babies and toddlers so I am quite excited to tell you about the next product!

Classical Lullabies for Sound Sleep, Vol. 1: Bach, by The Well-Tempered Baby, is an album of J.S. Bach’s most soothing and joyous compositions, arranged for harp, and tailored especially for small babies. Oh, and it’s probably the only album of baby music made entirely by a new mom – with a sleeping baby on her lap!
The album features a gentle, rocking tempo, easy-to-listen-to melodies and arrangements, minimal volume changes that won’t disturb a sleeping baby, and is timed to the approximate length of a baby’s sleep cycle.
I highly recommend this one! I had a friend try it out with her baby and her little one loves it!
