Rubba Ducks are no ordinary Ducks!

unnamed

I love Disney! I guess that really isn’t a big secret!  I was quite interested in finding out about something happening at the Boathouse Restaurant in Disney Springs! There are new ducks swimming around there and it’s not Donald! In a move that would make Disney’s famous duck proud, Rubba Ducks®, the premiere rubber duck toys with personality, has aligned with The Boathouse in Disney Springs in an exclusive deal that makes Rubba Ducks® the ONLY non-Disney item in the Boathouse gift shop

The ducks are super cute and lots of fun to collect and give as gifts. They were founded in 1997, and was the first company to bring character rubber ducks to life. What’s special about these ducks is that they are uniquely designed to communicate their individual personality and characters. While there are the traditional-themed ducks dressed as police, firemen, sports and animals, these ducks go a step further in incorporating specialized hobbies and interests like a train con’duck’tor, a marathon runner duck,  a ‘groovee’ duck, and even a duck who loves a good cappuccino, among many, many others.

I have to admit when I heard about the possibility of reviewing a Rubba Duck..I was just thinking I would be receiving a common, every day rubber duck. You know! The yellow ones that most of our younger kids play with in the bath. Well..I was more than pleasantly surprised! Rubba Ducks are no ordinary rubber ducks! The Rubba Ducks are the only Non-Disney Toy item from the Boathouse and they are quite special!

I received two adorable Rubba Ducks, each with their own unique style! Meet Crystal and Digger!

Crystal    Digger

I love both of these Rubba Ducks! My favorite is Crystal! She is one fancy duck! She hatched on November 3rd. I love how this one is prismatic and sunlight can turn it into a rainbow! Both ducks are very detailed and each of the Rubba Ducks® is adorned with a tattoo on its tail feathers reflecting its unique personality, and their own hatch date and engaging bio found on their trading cards. Another great thing about Rubba Ducks is that they really are for all ages from children to adults! There is one for everyone! I gave Digger to a child friend of mine and he takes it with him everywhere he goes.

Two really cool facts about the Rubba Ducks are that they float upright and all the time! No more rubber ducks falling over! Now, how cool is that!? Rubba Ducks are designed with weights at the bottom so they will always float upright! Try it in your own sink/bathtub/pool!

Another cool fact is about The ‘Hole’ Story. Most rubber ducks have a hole in the bottom which, when used in the bathtub can retain mold. Not Rubba Ducks! There is no hole in the bottom so NO MOLD! This fact is one I really like. I can’t even count how many rubber ducks I have had to throw away in the past because of mold.

Check out Rubba Ducks! You will be quite pleased!

Aftermath Lounge: A Novel in Stories (Calypso Editions)

PHMbZuqYwO-OrkR_xGPgFcQ2uWnn9qDmbLuIxF3iiQU

This is a collection of ten interwoven stories that follow the people of Gulf Coast Mississippi in the five years following Katrina. The Author received a National Endowment for the Arts to complete it and bases the novel loosely on her family’s historic home in Pass Christian, MS. “It manages to make you laugh and weep, and see what happened to people and places when the reporters and camera crews went away. ” –Rheta Johnson, King Features.

I received a copy of this book to participate in a blog tour and I truly enjoyed reading the stories. They are really quite heartwarming. They did make me tear up but they also made me happy. It truly is a must-read.

Here are Q & A with the Author:

Aftermath Lounge

1.Aftermath Lounge honors the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Can you tell us about your experience during those days when the storm hit?

Shortly after the storm hit, my husband and I drove down from Evansville, Indiana to Pass Christian, Mississippi. We saw aerial footage of the town and we could see that the roof on my parents’ house was mostly intact – that’s all we could see. We brought water and a lot of supplies to donate. There was a gas shortage then, and limited cell phone coverage. The closer we came to the town, the more it became like a war zone. The National Guard was there to keep people away, but we got through, thanks to a relative.

The night before we left, my mother told us to forget about everything else — all she really wanted was the painting of her mother, which had been smuggled out of Vienna during WWII. We had house keys but there were no doors. When we got there, the house was gutted – the storm surge had essentially ripped through the house.

We put on rubber gloves and spent the day sifting through the debris, dragging out any salvageable pieces of furniture. The water had shoved through the closed shutters, plowed up under the foundation and tore open the back walls, bashing around the furniture, sinks, toilets, stoves, washers, driers.

We never did find the painting.

Elizabeth Bishop wrote a wonderful villanelle called “One Art.” She wrote about losing small items like keys and an hour badly spent, then she progresses to the greater losses — her mother’s watch, a house, cities, rivers, a continent, and finally, a loved one. “The art of losing isn’t hard to master,” she starts. “So many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster.” I thought of that poem a lot.

2.Your family played a key role, helping Pass Christian rebuild. What were a few moments that influenced you during that time?

We saw so many people from all walks of life and they were suddenly homeless. My father organized financial donations. There were no fire trucks left after the storm, so he made sure Pass Christian got a fire truck. We were always big supporters of the library too. The Pass Christian Policemen had stayed during the storm to make sure everyone was safe. They had tried to stay safe in the library, but then when the water rose, they had to shoot out the windows to swim away to safety. I used that information in the title story of Aftermath Lounge. These men were real heroes.

3.Did you know from the moment the storm hit that someday you would write a novel about it? Or did a later experience give you the idea? If so, what was it?

At first I just witnessed. I think that’s what writers do mostly. We witness. Then the material lets us know what it wants to become. I just took notes. Later stories started taking shape and they were all in different voices. It was the only way I could work at this material.

4.Part of your inspiration for the novel came from your family’s beautiful mansion. How did your own experiences in that house shape each of the stories you wrote?

Well, it’s hardly a mansion, but I was surprised to discover just how much a house could mean. Everyone always says it’s just stuff, but there were so many collective memories there. When we stood and looked at everything so undone, it felt like our times spent there were gone too.

Katrina had such a huge impact on the coast, on my family, and on me. I am always telling my students to write what they most care about, to write what keeps them up at night. I had to write about Katrina. I had written about the Civil War, Reconstruction and WWII, so I saw Katrina as an historical event. I treated the hurricane more as setting. It’s in the background. The human drama is in the forefront. I’m always interested in what people do or don’t do in the face of real catastrophe. I didn’t want to write from one point of view either. I wanted to give voice to a variety of people because Katrina affected everyone.

5.What was your writing process like for this novel? Did you know from the start it would be a novel in stories? Or did that become apparent only after you began writing?

There were so many news stories coming out at the time. I write nonfiction, but I couldn’t get my thoughts together. I couldn’t make sense of anything. Out of habit, I took a lot of notes. I could only deal with writing about all that was happening a little bit at a time. And my own personal story just wasn’t that interesting.

I personally witnessed and experienced the best in human nature. People and communities came together and helped one another in the most meaningful way. They endured with a great deal of kindness and grace. So I chipped away at the material. I wanted to tell a community’s story.

The back-to-school time-crunch food conundrum:  We need a snack for our families and with a crazy day and packed to-do list it needs to be simple and fast.  The sad, but frequent solution:  We end up caving to fast food or settling on the “lesser evil” with a “healthy” snack often packed with sugar and/or preservatives.  Go Raw saves parents from settling.
Created by a father looking for healthy, delicious snack choices for his family,  Go Raw snacks are made of best quality ingredients that are simple, healthy, raw and organic. They are also nut free, dairy free and gluten free making them great for kids and families with allergies.  The snacks are a fantastic alternative to the so-called “healthy snacks” out there that are typically no more than glorified candy bars.
Along with being a delicious organic choice, Go Raw packs even more nutritional value because they are sprouted.  Live, sprouted grains and seeds have numerous benefits including greater availability of vitamins (like C), iron and other minerals, increased protein, higher soluble fiber content, to name a few.  And Go Raw snacks are made in manageable sizes and shapes that are kid-friendly for smaller hands.
Just a few delicious Go Raw snack options and ideas include:
  • Sprouted Cookies – in a variety of flavors like chocolate, lemon and carrot cake, Go Raw sprouted cookies are also great as a flavorful Go Raw Sprouted Cookie Spread.
  • Go Raw Watermelon Seeds – unique and delicious on their own, the seeds can also be whipped into a fantastic batch of Choco Chunk Candy Seeds and even a savory Watermelon Seed Pesto the entire family will love!
  • Go Raw Granola – great for breakfast, to top a yogurt snack, or even in tasty Go Raw Choco Chunk Pumpkin Bites or Go Raw Ice Cream Sandwiches.
  • Go Raw Sprouted Bars in flavors like banana bread, apricot, pumpkin and more are great on the go, any time of day.

I received samples and I like how these are such healthy options for both adults and kids! So many snacks today are loaded with sugar so it’s great to learn about these products! My favorite is the Go Raw Sprouted Bars in banana bread. Yum!

Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program in 15th Year

unnamed

For the past 15 years, the Office Depot Foundation has been giving children important tools they need to succeed in school – and in life – at the beginning of the new school year.

This year is no exception.  In 2015, the Foundation – the independent charitable giving arm of Office Depot®(NASDAQ:ODP) – is celebrating the 15th year of its award-winning National Backpack Program by donating 200,000 colorful new sackpacks to nonprofit organizations, schools and agencies across the United States and internationally.

By the end of 2015, Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation will have given away more than 3.7 million backpacks and sackpacks since the National Backpack Program began in 2001.

“For most children, the first day of school is an exciting time complete with new clothes and back-to-school gear,” says Office Depot Foundation President Mary Wong.  “But for kids in families where money is tight, the experience can be just the opposite.  We believe that every child should have the opportunity to go to school with dignity and hope.  The sackpacks and school supplies we donate help to level the playing field and give these wonderful children a reason to stand just a little bit taller.”

To distribute sackpacks directly to children, the Foundation is hosting Back-to-School Celebrations in some 20 cities across the U.S. in July and August.  This week, 18,000+ new sackpacks are being donated through events in Atlanta, San Francisco, New Orleans and Indianapolis.  In New Orleans alone, the Office Depot Foundation has donated more than 50,000 backpacks and sackpacks to children in the decade since Hurricane Katrina.

Thousands more sackpacks are being given to kids through the Office Depot Foundation’s continuing partnerships with nine nonprofit organizations serving children nationally and globally. The Foundation is collaborating with the AARP Experience Corps, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), the National Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Association, Feed the Children, Food For The Poor, the Kids In Need Foundation, the National Foundation for Women Legislators, Operation Homefront and Samaritan’s Feet International. For the seventh consecutive year, children of the Navajo Nation in Arizona will receive sackpacks.

The specially designed, drawstring-style sackpacks come in seven bright and colorful designs that are new for 2015.  Each one includes a zippered pouch containing a pen, pencil, pencil sharpener, eraser, six-inch ruler and four crayons. The sackpacks do not have any Office Depot Foundation or Office Depot logos or markings.

More information about the National Backpack Program can be found on the Foundation’s Facebook page atwww.facebook.com/officedepotfoundation. I received a  Box from BarkBox this past month..or I should say my pup, Bink did. It really was pretty cool! The box had a Circus theme so he received  some pretty cool treats and pretty cool toys! His favorite were the BarkMade Chicken Biscuits and the Feel Good Treat Company Trail Blazin Beef Bitz. I like that they both seemed pretty healthy. Bink also loved the toys but he chews through things rather quick. Each month there is a different theme, which is really cool! Our favorite that we received was the Space theme. Your dog will just love receiving a box every month!
