Something To Smile About

*Before and after photos.

When it comes to aging, the first thing we tend to scrutinize is our skin, bemoaning every line, wrinkle, sag, or age spot.  But teeth – either due to genetics or the ravages of time – are also huge factors in how old we look.    Some of us aren’t blessed with naturally straight, bright white teeth, but even if we are (or acquire them through orthodontia or whitening), they wear down with use, shift position, and become susceptible to chips, cracks and discoloration over time.

Luckily, improving your smile and looking years younger are easier than ever, thanks to the wide assortment of cosmetic dental procedures and at-home use products available today.  Your dentist can assess your smile and recommend the right one(s) for you.  Here is a quick “know-before-you-go” overview of some of the most popular options.

Tooth whitening:

Today, there are more tooth whitening options than ever to consider, from whitening toothpastes and mouth rinses to gel trays and strips to in-office professional treatments.  While more costly, in-office procedures usually produce the fastest, most dramatic and long-lasting results.

Bonding:

Dental bonding is a relatively inexpensive procedure that can be used to correct small spacing issues as well as chips and cracks.  It involves applying a tooth colored composite to the affected area, bonding it to the tooth, where it then hardens, and is finally polished.  Bonding cannot be used to whiten your entire smile, like porcelain veneers (see below) can.  And unlike porcelain veneers, bonding composite is vulnerable to staining.  It is not recommended for smokers.

Braces:

Many adults (even some who had orthodontia as children) are turning to braces to help improve the look of teeth that are crooked or crowded, correct an irregular bite, or jaw positioning.  Besides traditional metal braces, they often have the option of Invisalign (clear removable trays), depending on the nature of the problem they need to correct.  A dentist can help determine which option is best.   Braces typically require multiple office visits, and can involve pain during application and tightening (traditional braces).  The time commitment is daunting for some patients, and often a retainer must be worn indefinitely after the braces are removed.  While braces can result in a beautiful even smile, they only correct alignment and/or bite, and don’t fix chips, cracks, worn down teeth or discoloration.

Gingival (gum) contouring:

This is a minimally invasive laser procedure for reshaping the gum tissue around the teeth for a healthier, younger looking smile.  It lifts the gum line to reveal more tooth and/or evens out the gum line.  The procedure usually requires one office visit and local anesthetic.  Depending on the patient’s needs, it may also involve grafts or bone contouring, in which case, pain and anti-infection medications will be required.

Porcelain veneers

Many dentists agree that porcelain veneers (shields that cover existing, healthy teeth) are the gold standard for total smile transformation, because they can essentially do it all — build up worn down teeth, repair chips, cracks and discoloration, correct gaps or other spacing issues and even improve the look of gum erosion.  However, not all porcelain veneers are created equal, so it is important to ask your dentist about his or her experience with veneers, what kind of veneers will be used, and where and how they are fabricated.

It is also important to request detailed information about the procedure itself.  In most cases, irreversible traditional veneer procedures involve the removal of painful sensitive tooth structure, requiring numbing shots.  This is not the case with pain-free SmileSimplicity veneers that leave original tooth structure intact and never require an anesthetic.  And, the entire procedure is reversible in the unlikely event a patient is unhappy with the result.

More and more dentists are entrusting their porcelain veneer needs to SmileSimplicity, because they know they can count on the company’s specialized studio, experienced staff of artisan/techs and advanced technology to fabricate the flawless, high quality porcelain veneers that will delight their patients.

SmileSimplicity Porcelain Veneers are created through a process as integrated and meticulous as traditional Swiss watchmaking, which guarantees a perfect fit, color match, and natural-looking results every time.

Looking for a way to have a useful grip and stand for your tablet or cellphone? Have you heard of PopSockets? I have to admit I hadn’t until I had the opportunity to receive samples to do a review. PopSockets are actually quite handy and super easy to use! You can use one on the back of your phone or you can just use one. I found that I prefer to only use one on my phone. PopSockets is actually a great phone grip! What I love is that it is so much easier to grip my phone and not drop it! Yes, I drop my phone but not anymore. It is also great for taking photos with my phone. They make it so much easier and these are such a fun phone accessory. I received a few to sample, which is a good thing because my husband wanted to try them too! They are also easy to clean and easy to apply and remove. They are also great for when you or a child is bored…you can pop it over and over again. But, my favorite thing is using as a photo grip when taking photos and using as a phone grip.

PBS KIDS Super Vision app available on Apple Watch!

watch_break02

PBS KIDS Super Vision, the number-one children’s educational media brand’s revolutionary app for parents, is now available for Apple Watch. The free app gives parents the “super power” to easily engage with their kids’ digital media time wherever they are – in the kitchen, at work or on the go. With PBS KIDS Super Vision for Apple Watch, parents can limit their children’s screen time on pbskids.org by setting a simple Play Timer on Apple Watch. The fully featuredPBS KIDS Super Vision App for iPhone and iPod touch includes the Play Timer and offers parents a tool to see what their kids are watching, playing and learning on pbskids.org, helping parents make the most of their children’s screen time.

“PBS is committed to innovating across media platforms to have a positive impact on kids and parents,” said Ira Rubenstein, Senior Vice President and General Manager, PBS Digital. “At PBS, we look for learning opportunities in every new technology, and we have consistently been a first mover in the digital space. When we launched PBS KIDS Super Vision last year, we wanted to empower parents with a first-of-its-kind tool to support their children’s learning and give them ideas to help them build on that learning beyond the screen. PBS KIDS Super Vision for Apple Watch extends that capability, making it easier than ever for parents to transition their children from screen time to other activities.”

With the PBS KIDS Super Vision App, parents enter a simple code on their iPhone or iPod touch to start receiving:

  • Real-time information on what their child is playing, watching and learning on pbskids.org;
  • The ability to remotely set a Play Timer from their Apple Watch, iPhone or iPod touch that will put pbskids.org to sleep on their child’s screen, easing the transition from playing online to another activity, such as dinner time or bed time;
  • Related activities from PBS Parents that they can do with their child off-screen to extend the fun and learning goals of the games or videos their child plays on pbskids.org;
  • An Activity Summary to view the top educational skills, shows, videos and games their child used on pbskids.org.

The multiple Webby-award-winning PBS KIDS team designed PBS KIDS Super Vision using open source tools. The app is built on a platform that allows for the seamless, real-time pairing of multi-platform experiences and content on any device with an internet connection. The connection doesn’t require physical proximity, making it easy for parents to see and connect to their child’s screen-time experience anywhere.

PBS KIDS Super Vision is PBS KIDS’ second app designed specifically for parents. PBS Parents Play & Learn, also available for free, offers parents simple activities that they can do with their kids to support math and literacy, themed around specific locations such as the grocery store or the park.
