Mighty Mito SUPERHERO Written by Makenzie Lawrey

Mighty Mito Superhero

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and 9-year-old Makenzie Lawrey and her 6-year-old brother, Gavin, come with an inspiring story for readers – of any age!

When Gavin was diagnosed in January 2012 with Mitochondrial, a life-threatening disease, his big sister Makenzie had a difficult time understanding what was wrong with him. She became determined to write a book to help educate other families, including those living with “Mito” too, about the disease, while also helping to raise funds for research toward a cure.

With some help from her mom, Brandi, Makenzie’s first children’s book, “Mighty Mito Superhero,” was born and the preteen self-published it via Amazon’s CreateSpace, making Gavin’s heroic story available to families around the world.

On a mission to save her little brother and others suffering from Mito, Makenzie is a little girl with BIG dreams. She wants the whole world to know what Mito is and the kinds of incredible superheroes kids with Mito are. She believes one day doctors will find a cure – and she’s already well on her way to realizing her goal of raising $1 million! Between sales from her self-published book and donations from others whom Gavin’s story has touched, Makenzie has raised nearly $40,000 for the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF), and counting….

Through countless Facebook messages and emails, families around the globe have reached out to Makenzie and her family, thanking them for sharing Gavin’s inspiring story and shedding light on the disease and praising Makenzie as a hero for helping her brother and others facing similar situations. But, to Makenzie, it’s her brother who’s the real hero. (She even dedicated her book to “my superhero brother, Gavin.”)

Every 30 minutes a child is born that will develop Mitochondrial disease – but Makenzie and her family are working to change that reality for the better. Through their efforts, the Lawrey family, which lives in Cape Coral, FL, continues to boost awareness and pave the way for a brighter day for kids and families affected by Mito. Makenzie will be a featured guest at an upcoming book signing at the UMDF’s Energy for Life Walkathon in Tampa on March 22.

I received this book and was going to just do a review but thought the info above was very important to share with you! This is an heart-warming and amazing story and I was very touched by reading it. This is a wonderful book for children and for parents to understand about these children and the illness they have. It’s also a very loving and hopeful story about the young boy, Gavin, who truly is a superhero! You can also learn more about the Lawrey family and Gavin’s journey here. The author chose Amazon’s CreateSpace to self-publish her book:

I’m pretty excited to learn about an organic, healthy snack that both adults and kids will love! They are all natural, no sugar added and are only 35 calories per serving! Not only all that, they taste good! Even my son liked them! They come in delicious flavors such as Strawberries & Mangoes and we liked the Grapes! I am not a big fan of grapes except in chicken salad but I loved these Grapes!

Grapes    G-n-G Straw Banana_2-2014

There are Fruit Crunchies but they also have delicious Veggie Crunchies too! We had the opportunity to try out the Freeze Dried BBQ Roasted Veggies and I loved those! My son isn’t a big fan of peas so he ate up the rest of the bag of grapes. Looks like we will have to buy some more soon! To find out more, check out the website.

Don’t forget about the promotion we posted earlier this month!  (see below!)

Accountants and tax consultants are invited to email or post a 50 word or less note explaining why crunching the numbers is especially stressful this time of year and why they often turn to fattening snacks to help them get through the long hours and even longer tax forms. Email: or connect on: Facebook or Twitter.

The first 100 CPAs and tax consultants who send in emails with a shipping address along with easily verifiable proof that they’re in the financial planning industry will not only each win free Crunchies product, but also vie for a Grand Prize Gift Basket including Crunchies product as well as such fun Crunchies swag items as a shirt, hat, water bottle and more!

Crunchies is concurrently inviting all tax-paying U.S. consumers to send in 50 words or less on why the stresses and long hours leading up to April 15 likewise prompt them to consume an especially large amount of fattening and unhealthy snacks. The first 100 entries will similarly win free Crunchies product and vie for a Grand Prize Gift Basket (consumers need to remember to include their shipping address to receive their free Crunchies!).

Crunchies’ new “Crunching The Numbers” promotion will be driven primarily through the company’s robust social media channels. It was created to put a positive spin on the notion of number crunching during tax season by highlighting the all-natural satisfying and healthy crunchy appeal of Crunchies snacks that are naturally low fat with no preservatives or unhealthy additives, when compared to high-fat snacks such as potato chips.

Commenting on the “Crunching The Numbers” promotion, Crunchies’ Director of Marketing Jessi Brennan said, “Working on tax forms can be a long and laborious process which many people try to alleviate by eating high-fat, low-nutrition snacks that add to their weight and subtract from their overall well-being. That’s not healthy math! This promotion was created to encourage anyone stressing over Tax Day to instead grab a bag of delicious and nutritious Crunchies freeze-dried fruits and veggies – a snack that always adds up to a healthier and more satisfying treat.”
