ALL-NEW BOO AT THE L.A. ZOO

GL-BooElephant-JP

Annual Event, Sponsored by 99 Cents Only Stores,
Is Reimagined and Expanded to Every Day in October

October 1 through 31, 2015
10 am – 4 pm
Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens

This Halloween season, the Los Angeles Zoo offers families and Halloween lovers of all ages a chance to feed their imaginations with treats at the all-new BOO AT THE L.A. ZOO, expanded to an entire month of seasonal fun and learning beginning Thursday, October 1and continuing through Saturday, October 31, 2015, 10 am to 4 pm.  BOO AT THE L.A. ZOO 2015 features daily activities such asspooky caves spotlighting animals’ “super” natural senses, while weekends include a “Graveyard Safari” adventure, “Boneyard” education station, themed crafts, storytelling, live music, strolling characters, pumpkin carving, animal feedings and other family adventures.  Kids are invited to dress in costumes, and costume contests are presented throughout October.  Activities at BOO AT THE L.A. ZOO, which is sponsored by 99 Cents Only Stores, are free with paid Zoo admission.  Check lazoo.org/BOO for details and daily schedules.

In a twist on a more traditional Halloween haunted house, the L.A. Zoo debuts spooky caves in the Winnick Family Children’s Zoo, which are filled with shadows and projections of slithering snakes and crawling spiders and eerie sounds of nocturnal creatures and other special effects, as well as live tarantulas, scorpions and other critters.  Visitors wandering through the spooky surroundings can expect to unearth shocking facts about animals’ “super” powers such as heightened senses that help them survive in their environments.  Other daily activities include fun photo ops in front of a “Haunted Barn” backdrop and up-close “Animals and You” encounters with some of the Zoo’s smaller (and creepier) residents.

Weekends at BOO AT THE L.A. ZOO offer a slew of additional “sweet and spooky” entertainment and education attractions.  A new Graveyard “Safari” hay bale maze is stocked with “tombstones” and silhouette cut-outs of skunks, possums, raccoons and other creatures that inhabit backyards – like yours! — in the dead of night.  Animal skeletons and skulls at a “Boneyard” Station may actually make guests jump out of their skins a bit, as might mysterious characters strolling through the Zoo.  Adding a lighter touch are pumpkin-carving demonstrations, Halloween crafts, “Professor Johnson, Organ Donor’s Haunted Halloween Musical Review” featuring “silly songs and sing-alongs,” and “Dress Up With Campfire Cat,” including face painting with a choice of spiders or fangs with four shows each weekend day.

Zoo residents celebrate along with everyone, so guests are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for seasonal feedings of pumpkins for plant eaters and carcasses for carnivores on select dates (parental discretion for the latter is advised).  Feedings are set for lions onSaturday, October 3; for Komodo dragons on Sunday, October 4; for jaguars on Saturday, October 10; for elephants on Sunday, October 11; for the black bear on Saturday, October 17; for the tiger on Sunday, October 18; for snow leopards on Saturday, October 24; and for Komodo dragons on Sunday, October 25.  On Halloween, Saturday, October 31, guests can celebrate the one-year birthday of Rosie, the Zoo’s near-legendary baby hippo, with activities to be announced.  Traditional trick-or-treating at the Zoo takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25 and Saturday, October 31.

The landmark Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, drawing 1.6 million visitors each year, is home to a diverse collection of 1,100 animals representing 250 different species, many of which are rare or endangered.  Its lush grounds on 113 acres feature the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles); Elephants of Asia; Campo Gorilla Reserve; Rainforest of the Americas, an extraordinary collection of endangered and exotic mammals, reptiles, fish and amphibians living in spaces that exemplify their natural habitat in the rainforest biosphere; Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel; an Indian Rhino Encounter direct-contact opportunity; Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains, home to one of the largest troops of chimpanzees in the United States; Red Ape Rain Forest, where visitors can walk among orangutans; the Winnick Family Children’s Zoo; one of the largest flocks of flamingos in any zoo in the world; a botanical collection comprising over 800 different plant species with approximately 7,000 individual plants; and much more.  Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), whose members meet rigorous professional standards for animal welfare, the Zoo has achieved renown as an international leader in the preservation of endangered species and a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife.  The private, non-profit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA), which has supported the Zoo in partnership with the City of Los Angeles for more than five decades and provides funding for and operates seven essential Zoo departments, has 60,000 member households representing more than 240,000 adults and children.

Admission to the Los Angeles Zoo is $20 for general admission (ages 13 to 61); $17 for seniors (ages 62+), and $15 for children (ages 2 to 12).  No ticket is required for children under 2.  Admission for Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association members is free.

The Los Angeles Zoo is located in Griffith Park at the junction of the Ventura (134) and Golden State (5) freeways.  5333 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles, CA  90027.  Free parking is available.  For additional information, contact (323) 644-4200 or visit www.lazoo.org/BOO

I have to admit my favorite this Summer was the Maple Donut! Although, the current new flavors are pretty good too! My son’s favorite so far has been the Candy Clouds. But, we’re looking forward to Butterscotch and Minty Meadow! You simply can not find such unique flavors at any other type of frozen yogurt place and the toppings are always the best! So many options and they are always so fresh! I have to give a shout out to San Pedro Yogurtland  because they are the one we visited and they are always so super friendly!

Universal Studios Hollywood

The spotlight shines brightly on Universal Studios Hollywood as the world-class destination celebrates a milestone 50th anniversary with the much-anticipated opening of the “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” thrill ride, “Springfield,” an-all new immersive experience surrounding “The Simpsons Ride,” and a “Nighttime Studio Tour” as part of the theme park’s pioneering epic transformation.

This monumental undertaking—the most ambitious in the theme park’s storied 50-year history—will radically alter and reimagine its familiar footprint as The Entertainment Capital of L.A. sets its sights on the next 50 years.

From its humble beginnings five decades ago, Universal Studios Hollywood has emerged as one of the most progressive and exciting theme park experiences anywhere, while remaining true to its roots of immersing guests in the awe-inspiring world of movie-making magic.

Since its inception, Universal Studios has lifted the veil on Hollywood’s most illustrious industry, placing guests at the heart of favorite movies and television shows. It continues to be at the forefront of innovation, imagination and inspiration, working in collaboration with some of the most influential filmmakers in the business and the greatest minds in entertainment—Steven Spielberg, Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, Peter Jackson, Michael Bay and Chris Meledandri—to create intriguing rides and attractions.

“For 50 years, Universal Studios Hollywood has given guests unprecedented access to the world’s most alluring business by inviting them to peek behind the velvet curtain and become part of the exciting movie-making process,” said Larry Kurzweil, President of Universal Studios Hollywood. “We are reimagining over 75 percent of our destination as we build upon our incredible success and expand our vision for the future, and we look forward to entertaining and inspiring guests for generations to come with what will ultimately be an entirely new theme park experience.”

The “Glamour Trams” of yesteryear that gave way to today’s world-famous Studio Tour is undergoing a top to bottom makeover to coincide with the 50th anniversary, and by 2016, will roll out a fleet of new, contemporary trams, including the installation of ultra-comfy cushioned seats.  A modern exterior and sleek logo design will contribute to the updated aesthetics of these iconic trams, while a new Art Deco-themed Studio Tour entry portal, located within the theme park, will greet guests.

Offered in multiple languages, including Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish and English and led by expert guides, the acclaimed Studio Tour remains a hallmark Universal Studios Hollywood attraction bringing millions of guests through an authentic movie and television studio and into its elusive world motivated by three compelling words:  lights, camera, action.

The action, however, is only getting started.

This summer, high-octane excitement will race onto the scene when Universal Studios Hollywood introduces “Fast & Furious—Supercharged,” a pulse-pounding, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride as the new grand finale to the world-famous Studio Tour.

This gripping, technologically-advanced ride, inspired by Universal Pictures’ most successful film franchise of all time and featuring the film’s original cast members, will propel guests into the high-stakes underground world of fast cars and daring escapades traveling at accelerated speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. Situated within a newly constructed 65,000 square foot building on the legendary backlot, the high speed, 3D-HD ride will reunite stars from the Fast & Furious series—Vin Diesel (Dominic “Dom” Toretto), Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs), Michelle Rodriguez (Letty Ortiz), Tyrese Gibson (Roman Pearce) and Luke Evans (Owen Shaw)—in a revolutionary mega-attraction, conceived as a new installment to the dynamic film series that can only be experienced at The Entertainment Capital of L.A.

The layout of the park will become unrecognizable when “Springfield,” hometown of America’s favorite family, The Simpsons, breathes new life to the sprawling and vibrant space surrounding “The Simpsons Ride.”  “Springfield” is designed to capture the spirit of the animated town and engage visitors and fans of the show in the intensely absorbing and colorful world made famous throughout the series’ record-setting 26 seasons.

Guests visiting “Springfield” will have the pleasant sensation of being hurled through their television sets and into the accurately depicted town, complete with signature eateries such as Krusty Burger, Cletus’ Chicken Shack, Luigi’s Pizza and Phineas Q. Butterfat’s Ice Cream Parlor, along with Homer’s favorite hangouts, Lard Lad Donuts, Moe’s Tavern and Duff Brewery.

Universal’s slate of new 2015 attractions will entertain from sunup to sundown when the theme park broadens the scope of its popular Studio Tour with the introduction of a “Nighttime Studio Tour,” designed to enlighten guests on the art of moonlight movie-making.

Under a blanket of stars, over 20 locations along the famed Studio Tour route will showcase an array of luminous onset lighting and special effects used in nighttime production. Theatrical lighting will cast a glow on iconic backlot sets as Studio Tour guides shed light on Hollywood secrets and tricks of the world’s most glamorous trade, including how filmmakers create the effect of daylight amid the black of night.  Celebrated stars who found fame on Universal’s backlot will also make cameo appearances on the “Nighttime Studio Tour,” including Marilyn Monroe, Norman Bates and Frankenstein.  The “Nighttime Studio Tour” will run every weekend throughout the summer from July 4th through Labor Day.

The excitement that these new rides, attractions and themed immersive lands will bring to guests is only a prelude to the highly-anticipated arrival of “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™” in 2016.

In the spirit of the popular social media trend, Throwback Thursdays (#TBT), Universal Studios Hollywood’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will pay tribute to its legacy with a collection of nostalgic photos. Join the conversation and share Universal Studios Hollywood memories using #UniStudios50th and @UniStudios.

Universal Studios Hollywood, The Entertainment Capital of L.A.SM, includes a full-day, movie-based theme park and Studio Tour; the CityWalk entertainment, shopping and dining complex, the Universal CityWalk Cinemas and the “5 Towers” state-of-the-art outdoor concert venue.  World-class rides and attractions include the incredibly popular 3D Ultra-HD adventure, “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” and immersive “Super Silly Fun Land,” the critically-acclaimed mega-attraction, “Transformers™:  The Ride-3D,” the intense, award-winning ride, “King Kong 360 3-D” on the behind-the-scenes Studio Tour, “Revenge of the MummySM—The Ride” and “Jurassic Park® —The Ride.” As part of its milestone 50th anniversary celebration in 2015, Universal Studios Hollywood will debut a slate of dynamic new attractions, including the electrifying 3D-HD thrill ride, “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” as the grand finale to the famed Studio Tour, “Springfield,” hometown of America’s favorite TV family, adjacent to the award-winning “The Simpsons RideTM” and the “Nighttime Studio Tour,” offering evening tours of the iconic movie backlot.

This past week, my family had the opportunity to attend a Mom and Dad Blogger event at Universal Studios Hollywood! It was a hot sunny day and  quite crowded but we had so much fun! I do recommend if you go this Summer, you should buy the Front of the Line passes! I so wish all amusement parks offered this because it is worth the price! We had the opportunity to check out the all-new signature attractions, including: “Fast & Furious-Supercharged”, Raptor Encounter (this is really brand new!) and “Springfield,” Hometown of The Simpsons. I also love the Minions and the Minion Ride! I have to admit that the Minion Ride is a favorite of mine! (I also love seeing the Minions!)

20150715_150914   11745757_10205967719426569_5668610078210495126_n

We were blown away by the “Fast & Furious-Supercharged” and the Raptor Encounter! My son already liked the Studio Tour with comedian/video host Jimmy Fallon so the added “Fast & Furious-Supercharged” was a great addition and ending to the Studio Tour. It definitely is a thrill ride!  We took it quite seriously when told to turn off cellphones so unfortunately, no video or photo but you don’t want to miss this one!

Stay tuned! Next week’s Universal Studio post will include our thoughts on the Raptor Encounter and “Springfield,” Hometown of the Simpsons!

Celebrate Long Summer Days with New Menu Items at Islands Restaurants

20150629_184354    20150629_184310     20150629_184350

Islands Restaurants, known for its specialty burgers, ice-cold brews and laid back surf-inspired atmosphere, is welcoming summer with all-new seasonal menu items. Beginning June 15, guests can kick back, relax and celebrate long summer days with the new Hana Hou Burger, cooling Marga’veza and refreshing Mixed Berry Cooler.

Burgers are quintessential summer fare, and Islands’ new Hana Hou Burger brings the heat to the grill for a limited time. Topped with pepper jack cheese, a spicy Machete Aioli and grilled Borracho Beer Onions that are caramelized and simmered in beer, the Hana Hou Burger packs a spicy kick that pairs perfectly with the new Marga’veza – a cooling beer cocktail made with Anejo tequila, Coors Light, sweet and sour and a refreshing squeeze of citrus orange. Also new to the summertime cocktail menu is the Mixed Berry Cooler. Hand shaken with mixed berries, Tito’s Vodka, sweet and sour and a splash of soda, this cocktail is ideal for cooling off after a hot day at the beach and is sure to add a little “aloha” spirit to any meal.

In addition to the new summertime menu items, guests will be able to enjoy Islands’ happy hour deals in the bar area every Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., with late night happy hour available at select locations. Happy hour favorites include Islands’ famous Mai Tai, Cheddar Fries and Hawaiian Sliders.

Along with food and drink specials, each of Islands’ 55 restaurants is giving away a custom beach cruiser this summer – perfect for riding along the boardwalk. Beginning June 21, guests can enter for a chance to win every time they visit an Islands location, and the lucky winners will be selected on September 22.

For more information, follow Islands on Twitter and Instagram @IslandsBurgers and like Islands at www.facebook.com/IslandsRestaurants.

We had the opportunity to visit Islands in Long Beach (55 South Pine Avenue) and had the best time!  I didn’t try the new Hana Hou Burger (I love their variety of tacos!) but my husband did and he loved it! He also tried the new Marga’veza and the Mixed Berry Cooler. His favorite was the Marga’veza.  My husband isn’t a big Tequila drinker but he says this drink was just right with his burger. My 11-year-old son can be quite particular about food but he quickly gobbled down more than half of the Sweet Potato Fries we had as an appetizer!

Although, I did not try any of the new items on the menu, I did try a new variety of tacos. The Yaki Tacos which I really loved! Grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce…yum! I also had the Mangorita Margarita which was really good! Dessert is also a must-have! I had the Kona pie, which is big enough to share!

20150629_182834

Over all, Islands has awesome food and you have to try the new Summer menu items! Actually, their entire menu is great! But, the very best thing about Islands…is their amazing service!  There simply are no words to say how amazing are visit was due to the customer service. I really have to give a shout out to our waiter, Alex and to the manager Joe! Thank you! Our family had a wonderful time and will be back soon!

Surf Rodeo Gears Up For Its 8th Festival On July 11-12

unnamed (2)

Though the California coast is regularly covered with surfers all year-round, Surf Rodeo is the only event to bring together thousands of quirky and fun-loving surf cowboys, 25 world class bands, an outdoor street fair, beers gardens and more to the beach. Surf Rodeo, both a surfing contest and music festival, will take place on July 11 and 12 in Ventura.

unnamed (1)

The festival will feature surf competitions, a bikini cowgirl contest and the infamous Cornhole competition, as well as dozens of musical performances, a food court, a street fair with vendors offering craft goods, two beer gardens, a mechanical bull and many more surprises.

Pato Baton and The Aggrolites are confirmed to headline the Surf Rodeo Festival. Other performers include Bob Log III, Wheeland Bros., Rainbow Girls, Groove Session, Brothers Fortune, Jukebox 101, Kane Gang, Dankrupt, The Iron Outlaws, Bird Brain, Jan Michael and the Vincents, Pleasure, Skatanic Rednecks, Inhale, Clean Spill, NaVaNax, Ska Daddyz, Stoneflys, Jackass, Vokab Kompany, Rubberneck Lions, Honey Owl, and of course the local favorites Raging Arb and the Redheads.

“I never thought about Surf Rodeo as being a business,” said John Drury, founder ofSurf Rodeo. “It’s more of a way to keep the waters communal, taking the edge off the territorial surfer thing. By creating a bunch of surf contests, and adding fun contests like the Greased Pig and the Obstacle Race, we lightened the feeling of competition. We try and remind ourselves we are all out for the same thing, to just have fun! Let’s laugh at ourselves a little and bring us together through music and surfing.”

Over the past three years, Surf Rodeo has been raising funds for the Boys and Girls Club by holding a benefit drawing. The prize this year is a fully restored 1965 Volkswagen Bug. Tickets to win the car are $20 and can be purchased at Avenue Thrift Store, located at 222 N. Ventura Ave, Ventura, CA 93001 and at the Surf Rodeoevent on July 11 and 12. Winners must be present to win.

Each year, Surf Rodeo partners with local businesses to rebuild cars that are in need of TLC. The community pitches in and 100% of the proceeds benefit The Boys and Girls Club of greater Ventura. “The community wins,” said Drury. Video of VW Bug progress can be found here: http://surfrodeo.org/bgcv-vehicle. If that isn’t already enough, Surf Rodeo will also be filming footage at the festival this year for the future documentary, Road to the Rodeo.

Discounted tickets and specials to Surf Rodeo are available online now. Ticket prices are $16 for one day and $25 for two days. The Surf Rodeo competition begins at 7:00 a.m. on July 12th and 13th at the Ventura Pierpont Beach, located along Seaward Avenue. The music festival and beer gardens open at 11:00 a.m. on the beach and street festival hours are Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, including tickets, band lineup and more, please visit www.surfrodeo.org or call (805) 628-9083. Follow Surf Rodeo on Facebook atwww.facebook.com/SurfRodeo for up-to-date event information and specials.

About surf rodeo
Surf Rodeo started as a passion project for Ventura entrepreneur, John Drury, lovingly known as JD to most of the Ventura community. Drury’s mission for Surf Rodeo was to bring the highly competitive, cut-throat, serious atmosphere of today’s surf competitions back to its relaxed roots, where fun always comes first.
