The Aquarium’s Earth Day Celebration will feature special appearances by its animals, themed classes for kids, an evening lecture for adults, and more

WHAT: This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and the Aquarium of the Pacific is inviting kids and adults at home to join in for its first virtual Earth Day event. You can watch special appearances by the Aquarium’s animal ambassadors, including penguins. For parents looking for educational activities for kids and teens, the Aquarium’s educators will present a variety of Earth Day-themed interactive classes. The Aquarium’s Pacific Pals characters will release a special episode of their show The Daily Bubble to celebrate the special day. Adults are invited to tune in at 7:00 p.m. PDT for a live-streamed lecture hosted by Aquarium President Dr. Jerry Schubel featuring guest speaker Douglas McCauley, an associate professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. McCauley will share how we can all take inspiration, in challenging times, from lessons of resiliency in our ocean and what responsibility we have, on Earth Day, to recommit to protecting ocean health.

The Aquarium has hosted its annual Earth Day Celebration in April, a weekend-long festival featuring booths and activities, for the past twenty years. This year it will use technology to observe Earth Day and provide a way for the public to connect with ocean science while they are at home.

6 Benefits Of A Play Kitchen For Your Child

1.Encourages teamwork

Human beings are social creatures, in that we all like to spend time with each other. For kids, this time is mostly spent playing, and play cooking is a great way for your kids to spend time together with their siblings or friends. With a play kitchen, your kids will not only have fun with their peers but they will also learn a few important skills that they will hold onto for the rest of their lives. With a play kitchen, the children tend to distribute kitchen roles among themselves, which ensures the success of the “cooking” task as a whole. One prepares the dishes, while the other cleans up. In doing so, the kids learn to cooperate and work together to ensure the success of their play cooking.

2. Enhances organizational skills

A play kitchen has plenty of parts, accessories, and tools which the children have to utilize during play. Organizational skills tend to be one of the hardest concepts parents have to teach their children, even as they grow older. Luckily, with the numerous parts of the play kitchen set, your child can learn the important organizational skill, since they have to correctly organize their tools if they are to use them during their next play date. With frequent use of the play kitchen, your child can acquire important organizational skills for the rest of their lives.

3. Teaches responsibility

With a children’s play kitchen set, your children can learn how to be responsible for their property, since they have to look after all the various utensils in the set as well as the play kitchen itself. By teaching your child how to properly take care of the play kitchen, they can learn a valuable lesson in responsibility.

4. Enhances problem-solving

As your child increases their frequency of play cooking in their play kitchen, so do they enhance their problem-solving skills. While playing, the child can solve various problems, like learning how to share equal food portions among a set number of people, or looking for an alternative utensil in case the tool they need is absent. As they do this, they are learning how to count as well as how to make various decisions.

5. Enhances creativity and imagination

While your child plays with their play kitchen set, they are improving their creativity and imagination, since they are making up dishes from their minds and trying out various ingredients to make their imaginary food. By encouraging the child to play with the play kitchen set, they can get more ideas and to get more imaginative, which will also help them in their lives as they grow up.

6. Gives a sense of independence

By giving your child a play kitchen, it helps them gain a sense of independence as they can create their dishes, or run their playset as they wish. Since they can work independently, the children also develop self-confidence since they can bring out their ideas and imagination without having to be compared to others.

Juniper, April 15th Pet of the Week!

Juniper is one of the few pets remaining in our shelter. She’s a beautiful 4-year-old steel-gray pit bull who came in as a stray and immediately warmed up to the staff and volunteers. She’s happy and loving and will follow you anywhere. Unfortunately, she has a health issue—masses that need examination and attention. She’d do so much better in your home with you, and she’ll certainly make your own stay-at-home nicer! Meet Juniper on the shelter side at the P. D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village, 7700 East Spring St., (562) 570-PETS. Ask for #A641644.

The Los Angeles Zoo Announces an Interactive Draw-Along Series Beginning Saturday, April 18;
Bringing Awareness to the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and Endangered Species Day in “Wild for the Planet” Virtual Efforts
As part of its “Bringing the Zoo to You” initiative, offering educational and entertaining activities and content from the Los Angeles Zoo into animal-lovers’ homes during the COVID-19 crisis, the L.A. Zoo announces a partnership with L.A.-based artist Brian Kesinger, a 20-year veteran of Walt Disney Feature Animation and a Supervising Director for Disney Television Animation.
Going virtual for 2020, L.A. Zoo kicks off its “Wild for the Planet” event with a series of Facebook Live draw-alongs taking place on the L.A. Zoo Facebook page for four consecutive Saturdays, starting this Saturday, April 18th. “Wild for the Planet” is an annual springtime celebration from Earth Day (April 22) to Endangered Species Day (May 15.)
Over the course of four weeks, Brian Kesinger will draw four endangered animals that the L.A. Zoo has helped bring back from the brink of extinction:

Week 2 (April 25): Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog
Week 3 (May 2): Peninsular Pronghorn
Week 4 (May 9): Western Lowland Gorilla
In addition, Brian Kesinger created an original animal babies coloring book exclusive to the L.A. Zoo to celebrate the oodles of adorable animal babies born at the Zoo this spring.  The brand-new “L.A.
