Niko, Sept. 8th Pet of the Week

Take a cup of German shepherd, a scoop of rottweiler, a pinch or two of maybe some Australian kelpie and a whole lotta personality. Put ‘em together and whaddya got? Niko! Niko’s a bibbidy-boppidy-bootiful beautiful 4-year-old fellow who’s inexplicably been at our shelter for a year. He’s a smart, good boy with medium energy, is treat motivated, and is easy to walk on his leash. His new owner will need patience since it may take Niko a while to develop a bond, but with regular exercise, structure and balance, he’ll be the best boy you could want. Niko means “victory of the people” in Finnish, but he hasn’t had a victorious finish yet. Can you help him live up to his name? You can speed the process to adopt or foster Niko and any of our other pets by emailing PetAdopt@longbeach.gov or petfoster@longbeach.gov. You can also call (562) 570-4925. Even better, stop by during our new open walk-in hours every Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Our shelter is located at 7700 E. Spring St. Ask for ID#A605387 to meet Niko. We’re at capacity, and everyone needs homes!

Miranda, Sept. 1st Pet of the Week

Don’t be fooled by Miranda’s stern countenance. She just finished a cuddle session with a volunteer and is purrrfectly content. That’s just her RFF (resting feline face). Miranda is 6 years old and has been at the shelter for four months. She has some treatable health issues, and she also has a sweet, mellow disposition. She’d make a perfect lap cat. Staff and volunteers urgently request rescue, foster or a committed adopter to take over her care. Her adoption fee will be sponsored by a generous donor. Shelter hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 7700 E. Spring St. at the entrance to El Dorado Park (no parking fee for shelter visitors). You can email PetAdopt@longbeach.gov to speed the process for adopting or fostering Miranda. Ask for ID#A673873).

(This rescue encouraged by the usual suspects.)

Hemsworth, Aug. 25th Pet of the Week

“Ooooowwww, I’m furever blowin’ bub-bulls . . .” Hemsworth looks as if he doesn’t know what’s going on, but he’s so ready for any adventure in a real home. Hemy’s a champagne-beige midsize pittie, and his backstory is anything but bubbly. He was abandoned at someone’s house and found himself at Long Beach Animal Care Services at only a year old. He’s now 2, meaning that he’s been here for nearly an entire year! The volunteers adore him and have nicknamed him Frogman because of his resemblance to the animal! He’s affectionate toward most people and is medium-active—playful and then settles down nicely to rest. He’d thrive with patient humans familiar with this breed in a home with adults and mature kids. Wanna hop around with Hemsworth? Our shelter hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 7700 E. Spring St. at the entrance to El Dorado Park (no parking fee for shelter visitors). You can email PetAdopt@longbeach.gov to speed the process for adopting or fostering Ivy. Ask for ID#A662968.

You don’t want to miss STREET ART ALIVE at THE LUME LOS ANGELES!

STREET ART ALIVE at The Lume Los Angeles

I had the opportunity to visit an amazing new digital art gallery, THE LUME Los Angeles, and the launch of the world premiere of STREET ART ALIVE, and I really was blown away!

STREET ART ALIVE opened on April 22nd to the public. I had planned to visit mid-June but I was, unfortunately, feeling under the weather.  But, there is still time to experience STREET ART ALIVE  at THE LUME Los Angeles this month! What is it? It is a multi-sensory exhibit that transports visitors on an unforgettable journey through the streets and alleys of more than 20 iconic cities, including New York City, London, SaÞo Paulo, Melbourne, and Berlin. It is amazing! It’s a 45-minute ticket but you can stay longer so you can see everything! It is even encouraged to stay longer so you can see it all!

To bring this highly unique and authentic experience to life, Grande Experiences, owners and creators of THE LUME digital art galleries, and creators of STREET ART ALIVE, worked in collaboration with prolific artists including Blek Le Rat, considered the Godfather of stencil art, D*Face, known for vibrant pop art-inspired murals and Lady Pink, nicknamed “First Lady of Graffiti,” one of the first women active in the early ‘80s New York City subway graffiti subculture.

The STREET ART ALIVE experience includes:

  • Interactive installations throughout over 25,000 sq. ft, featuring a large-scale, 360-degree multi-sensory gallery.
  • Eight original full-sized sections of the Berlin Wall, which artists from across the globe used as a canvas for their political statements and powerful social commentary. Throughout the exhibit’s run, THE LUME Los Angeles will invite local street artists to add their voices to these iconic and symbolic concrete walls.
  • An audio experience for STREET ART ALIVE with a specially curated soundtrack with music from genre-defining legends.  From the distorted punk/pop spilling out of CBGB’s onto the Bowery in New York City in the late ’70s to the turntablism, break beats and rap poetry of 80’s Hip Hop, street art is the visual expression of these seminal sounds.
  • Themed café and bar

STREET ART ALIVE showcases a pivotal art movement and tells the story of street art through the lens of the artists in a way that visitors of all ages and cultures can relate to. Art generated from the streets from all over the world transcends the art itself, striking at the heart of social issues, community sentiment, politics and current world affairs. I loved it! There’s even a Chalk Wall at the end where you can add your own art and statement!

Tickets to THE LUME Los Angeles’ STREET ART ALIVE start at $39 and are available for purchase online at https://thelume.com/losangeles/.

More information can also be found by visiting https://thelume.com/losangeles/

You Don’t Want to Miss Musical Theatre West’s Sizzlin’ Summer Production of “Grease”

Photo provided to facilitate this post. Credit: Musical Theatre West.

I had the opportunity to put on my Pink Lady Jacket and go check out the opening night of the Musical Theatre West’s musical production of “Grease” and was blown away! It was an incredible performance! The show runs on select dates, July 8 – July 24, 2022, at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center on the campus of Cal State Long Beach. Tickets for the rockin’ return of Grease to the Musical Theatre West stage range from $20 – $96 each and are available now, by phone at 562-856-1999 or online at musical.org.

The show may not be exactly as you imagine but the message is clear through the performance that it’s wonderful to be who you are and that you don’t have to be anyone else. I know, I know….it still does follow the basic traditional Grease movie and has all the great sing-a-long songs but this one also has a wonderful message with wonderful talented performers. There’s still time to see it this month and I highly recommend it!

Looking for a Pizza place that is more than just pizza? Piccini is the place to check out!

Piccini in Torrance located at 4642 Del Amo Blvd
Torrance, CA 90503-1939

I recently had the opportunity to check out the new pizza place in my neighborhood and to say I was impressed is really an understatement! I have to admit that Pizza would not normally be my first choice. Italian food in general has not been one of my top three choices. Piccini claims to be more than pizza and I completely believe their claim. Piccini is family-owned & operated by Vince Giuliano & family. Here’s a fun fact! Did you know that in Italian, PICCINI means “little ones”? The owners named their takeout spot after their two boys, Luca and Nico. Now, how sweet is that?!

Now, back to the review! I did order a pizza and chose a BBQ Chicken Pizza. It was delicious and I will definitely be buying it again!

BBQ Chicken Pizza

This really was one of the best pizzas I have ever had! I can honestly say that I would love to have this pizza again! I shared this one with family and there weren’t any leftovers! I will be trying other pizzas now that I have found a pizza place I do really like! But, as I said..this is much more than your average pizza place! I also tried one of their starters/appetizers, one of their sandwiches, and a dessert!

Fried Artichokes

I am a big fan of Artichokes but have to admit I don’t eat them as often as I would like. But, I would eat these Fried Artichokes every week! They taste sooo good! They aren’t over-fried and they taste really fresh! I may just go to Piccini once a week just for these tasty fried artichokes!

Meatball Sandwich

I love sandwiches! So, obviously, I had to try one from Piccini! The Meatball Sandwich literally was my ultimate favorite! I couldn’t eat the whole sandwich in one sitting and saved half for the next day. Can you believe it was still delicious the next day? This really is the best Meatball Sandwich that I have ever had!

Salted Caramel Tiramisu

Usually, I will not get dessert at a Pizza type of place! I have just never been that impressed, to be honest! But, oh my! You have to get dessert at Piccini! The Salted Caramel Tiramisu is delightful! I just loved it and I could see myself going to Piccini just for this tasty dessert!

So, what are you waiting for? Piccini is definitely the place to buy Pizza and so much more!
