Aquarium of the Pacific debuts first HoloTheater® on the U.S. West Coast

The Aquarium of the Pacific’s Ocean Theater has transformed into a brand-new immersive experience that opens on September 4, making it the first HoloTheater® on the U.S. West Coast. Developed by BASE Xperiential, a live entertainment and media company based in Houston, Texas, the HoloTheater® installation uses six projection surfaces in a custom-designed theater to bring creatures, their environments, and stories to life.

The new space combines panoramic projection, holographic imagery, and spatial audio, allowing up to 132 guests to get an up-close-and-personal glimpse of the ecosystems of past and present. No glasses, VR headsets, or other wearable technology is required to experience the films in 3-D.

The new HoloTheater® is opening with Dinosaur Discoveries: A Holographic Adventure, where dinosaurs appear to come alive on a stage in front of the screen. This twenty five-minute film produced by BASE Xperiential in partnership with Paquin Entertainment Group, and distributed in collaboration with MacGillivray Freeman Films, transports audiences across prehistoric landscapes to encounter some of the most extraordinary creatures to ever walk the Earth. It is an educational journey that tells the evolving story of paleontological discoveries and scientific revelations that gave us what we know today about these remarkable creatures.

“We are looking forward to having the first HoloTheater® experience on the West Coast as a new immersive experience for our guests. We hope they leave inspired to learn more about ocean animals that lived on our planet at the same time as dinosaurs and are still with us today from sea jellies to sharks,” said Nicole Meek, Aquarium of the Pacific senior director of visitor operations.

Multiple HoloTheater® shows will run daily at the Aquarium, and tickets can be purchased with Aquarium admission on-site or in advance online. Later this fall, Ocean Giants Revealed will debut in the Aquarium’s HoloTheater®, where guests can submerge themselves into the world of the deep sea where few have traveled and witness the beauty and diversity of marine species both past and present, including whales, sea jellies, megalodon, and other prehistoric sea creatures.

KALEIDOSCOPE OF HOPE: How Butterfly Life Cycles Reflect Our World by Miranda Paul, illustrated by Hari & Deepti 

Over a decade ago, Miranda Paul and her children read A Place for Butterflies by Melissa Stewart – they’ve been hooked on helping pollinators ever since. From re-landscaping their yard and participating in community science projects, to raising butterflies themselves, a simple read-aloud inspired a lifetime of caring more deeply about butterflies and the world around them. In Miranda’s new picture book, she cleverly explores how “hope and action are a cycle – hope can lead to action, and action can lead to hope” – a poignant message in a time where both hope and action can feel increasingly difficult. The book features incredible artwork by Hari & Deepti, a married artist duo in Mumbai who used photos from Miranda’s experience raising butterflies to create 3D butterfly sculptures out of paper, glue, paper clay, and watercolors (due to monsoon season, everything took extra long to dry!). HONEYBIRD BLUE by Taunya English, illustrated by Coretta Scott King Honor winner Raissa Figueroa

An immersive debut picture book about a father-daughter birding adventure – perfect for nature lovers, anyone who’s hopped on the color walk trend, and readers looking for more green stories with inclusive representation. Young readers will delight in learning about birds’ distinct colors and songs, while adult readers will recognize the special significance in centering a joyful Black family of birders who feel safe and welcome in their local nature preserve. This debut is close to Taunya’s heart, as she herself is a longtime naturalist and a dedicated member of Outdoor Afro. Such a beautiful story!

Southern California local Ellie Laks has been rescuing animals since she was a child. When the PAW Patrol’s archrival, Mayor Humdinger, begins recklessly mining in hopes of exploiting the island for its natural resources, he inadvertently causes a huge, dormant volcano to erupt. The PAW Patrol pups are thrown into a series of high-stakes, dino-sized rescues bigger than anything they’ve done before, as they must stop Humdinger before everything on the island goes extinct.

If you thought the PAW Patrol pups couldn’t get any more adventurous, think again! Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie delivers an action packed journey filled with dinosaurs, laughs, heart, and plenty of heroic moments that had me cheering from beginning to end. From the moment the pups arrive on a mysterious dinosaur island, the movie keeps the excitement going with thrilling rescues, funny moments, and lovable characters. As a longtime fan of the franchise, I loved seeing the pups tackle a brand new adventure while introducing an exciting new member of the team.

The story follows Ryder and the Paw Patrol pups after a powerful storm strands them on a hidden island where dinosaurs still roam. There, they meet Rex, a dino obsessed Bernese Mountain Dog who knows everything there is to know about the prehistoric creatures and helps guide the team through the island. Meanwhile, their longtime rival, Mayor Humdinger, creates chaos by mining for diamonds, accidentally awakening a volcano and putting everyone, including the dinosaurs, in danger. It’s up to Ryder, the pups, and Rex to work together, save the island, and prove once again that no rescue is too big and no pup is too small.

The animation is vibrant, colorful, and absolutely stunning, bringing the lush dinosaur island to life with beautiful landscapes and exciting action sequences. Every dinosaur is full of personality, while the pups remain just as lovable as ever. The talented voice cast helps every character feel fun, relatable, and memorable. One of the biggest highlights is meeting Rex (Hayden Chamberlen), who gives the courageous pup so much heart and humor. Rex uses a high-tech wheeled harness for his hind legs, and it’s especially meaningful that Hayden, who uses a wheelchair in real life, brings authentic representation to the role. McKenna Grace once again shines as the voice of Skye, bringing warmth, confidence, and bravery to one of the franchise’s most beloved pups.

The film’s message is about teamwork, courage, kindness, and believing in yourself. It reminds us that everyone has unique strengths and that differences can become superpowers when we work together. The film also celebrates inclusion through Rex’s character, showing that heroes come in many forms. With positive messages, exciting adventure, plenty of laughs, and no inappropriate content, this is a cute, safe, and family-friendly movie that Paw Patrol fans will resonate with and it might create a lot of new Paw Patrol fans.

I give Paw Patrol The Dino Movie 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 8, plus adults. It releases in theaters Friday, August 14, 2026.

I was surprised by Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie! The storyline is much more intense and action- packed than the previous Paw Patrol movies while keeping some of the recurring themes such as the corrupt Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo) and Marshall’s (Carter Young) mishaps.

In Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, a huge storm causes the PAW Patrol ship to crash on an unknown island where dinosaurs exist. The squad teams up with a local pup named Rex (Hayden Chamberlen) and a baby dinosaur to save the island from Humdinger’s greedy diamond mining which causes a dormant volcano to erupt.

This adventurous film has some suspenseful scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat. One stressful scene, resulting from one of Humdinger’s disasters, involves a giant dino getting stuck between two rock cliffs and it’s up to the Paw Patrol’s teamwork to save him. I like how the screenplay, written by Bob Barlen, Cal Brunker, Keith Chapman, incorporates nature into the scenes in creative ways. One example is how they use giant tree leaves to make hang gliders showing that, if you take the time to look for it, nature gives you everything you need. Given that the story takes place on an island, it’s fun to see the Patrol get cool new jungle survival suits for their latest mission. I really like it when movies carry over common themes from a previous film in the franchise. In this case, it’s Marshall’s classic catchphrase, “I’m okay,” which always makes me laugh. The graphics are very cutting edge, less cartoon-like, and more realistic than the previous two Paw Patrol films. But honestly, I like the old school graphics better. The official soundtrack has energetic music by the Backstreet Boys that keeps the theater vibe exciting throughout the movie.

This film’s message is about teamwork, never giving up and learning from your mistakes.  Ryder (Henry Bolan) consistently coaches the Paw Patrol to work together during their missions. He encourages Marshall when he gets down on himself for making mistakes by saying, “I didn’t pick you because you don’t make mistakes, I picked you because you are the Pup that NEVER gives up!”

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie gets 4 out of 5 stars from me and I recommend it for ages 5 to 8, plus adults. The film releases in theaters on August 14, 2026.
