Books of the Week: September 4th, 2026

THROUGH THE BLACK GATE by Alfredo Cáceres
Atheneum | 9781665941822 | Ages 8-12

A “[p]oignant, insightful, and otherworldly” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) middle grade graphic novel about an orphaned girl and a music-loving boy who venture into the land of the dead with the hope of seeing their loved ones again. Thirteen-year-old orphan Irene believes her father’s soul is trapped inside her cat, Moses. Living at her caregiver Ruth’s hostel, Irene spends every waking hour studying a mystical book that her parents left behind in the fire that took their lives. Irene thinks the book can help her see them again, if only Moses will give her a clue. Then, just as a strange fog sweeps over their quiet Chilean town, a mysterious young musician named Francis moves into the hostel. Irene and her new roommate don’t particularly get along, but Moses soon leads them both through the fog to a strange tear in reality: an entrance to the Land of the Dead. Believing this is the key to seeing her parents again, Irene and Francis cross to the other side. There, they encounter the Ferryman of the Dead, who is desperate to escape into the Land of the Living. The Ferryman offers to return Irene and Francis’s loved ones in exchange for their help. In the face of such a massive promise, Irene and Francis must decide whether to risk the fate of both the Lands of the Living and the Dead or be braver than they ever thought possible.

About the book:

Even the most restless reader will find peace and quiet in this breathtakingly illustrated book about the magic of nature, nighttime, and a duck who can’t sleep, based on a poem by the renowned E.B. White which was published in The New Yorker in 1928 and now appears for the first time in book form.

How surprised I was to see
A duck as wide awake as me.

Long past bedtime, two creatures sleeplessly wander around and around the reservoir in New York’s Central Park. What woes and wonders keep them awake so late?

Based on a poem originally published in The New Yorker by the legendary author E.B. White, and marvelously illustrated by two-time Caldecott Honoree Melissa Sweet, the book you hold is a love letter to nature in unlikely places, a testament to the power of imagination, and a balm to restless readers everywhere.

About the creators:

E. B. White, the author of such beloved classics as Charlotte’s Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan, was born in Mount Vernon, New York. He graduated from Cornell University in 1921 and, five or six years later, joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine, then in its infancy. He died on October 1, 1985, at his home in Maine.

Mr. White’s essays have appeared in Harper’s magazine, and some of his other books are: One Man’s Meat, The Second Tree from the Corner, Letters of E. B. White, Essays of E. B. White, and Poems and Sketches of E. B. White. He won countless awards, including the 1971 National Medal for Literature and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, which commended him for making a “substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.”

During his lifetime, many young readers asked Mr. White if his stories were true. In a letter written to be sent to his fans, he answered, “No, they are imaginary tales . . . But real life is only one kind of life—there is also the life of the imagination.”

Melissa Sweet has illustrated more than one hundred books, including Kwame Alexander’s How to Read a Book and How to Write a Poem, and has written and illustrated her own work. Her work has been featured in magazines, on greeting cards, and on living room walls. Melissa has received the Caldecott Honor Medal twice, among many other awards, including the Sibert Award, and is a New York Times bestselling author and artist. Melissa lives in Maine. EARTH TO CHRIS CLEEVY: A Graphic Novel by Christof Bogacs, illustrated by Hannah Krieger and Sammy Savos

11-year-old Chris Cleevy’s out-of-this-world imagination has always been fueled by his love of sci-fi. Thankfully, simple routines like tying his shoelaces and picking out his socks have kept him grounded right here on Earth. But his carefully constructed world is shattered when his mom brings home her new boyfriend, Phil. Despite Phil’s friendly demeanor, Chris becomes convinced Phil’s a member of the mind-controlling alien race from one of his science-fiction stories. Chris believes, however, that his routines will shield his mind from Phil’s alien influence. As the world becomes harder and harder to navigate, Chris discovers the source controlling his behaviors may have a different, more earthly origin. Earth to Chris Cleevy is a poignant exploration of OCD, the ups and downs of middle school, and what it means to accept yourself for who you are.

CREEPY KID by Caleb Roehrig

12-year-old Edgar Alden, also known as “Poe,” has always been an outcast. Obsessed with the macabre, he’s never remotely hit it off with other kids, who have called him “Creepy Kid” since kindergarten. Only Grandma ever really understood his love for the supernatural, but when she dies and his parents move into a dilapidated house on the other side of town, things for Poe quickly go from bad to worse. You see, Poe has a roommate. A dead one. A 12-year-old ghost named Violet, who’s been stuck haunting Poe’s room for longer than she can remember. Violet is territorial, kind of annoying, and tethered to the human world by her doll, Baby Jessica. But Poe quickly discovers that Violet isn’t the only spirit haunting his house. There’s a vengeful, violent entity in his basement, and it’s up to Poe to find a way to help them both cross to the other side. Creepy Kid’s eerie moments of suspense make it just right for spooky season, but its heartfelt exploration of grief and moving on are also sure to make readers laugh, cry, and wonder about the mysteries that might lie on the other side.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie * Delivers An Action Packed Journey Filled With Dinosaurs, Laughs, Heart, And Plenty Of Heroic Moments

After their ship gets caught in a mysterious storm, the PAW Patrol pups crash land on an uncharted tropical island filled with dinosaurs. They meet Rex, a pup who has been stranded on the island for years and has become an expert in all things dino-related. When the PAW Patrol’s archrival, Mayor Humdinger, begins recklessly mining in hopes of exploiting the island for its natural resources, he inadvertently causes a huge, dormant volcano to erupt. The PAW Patrol pups are thrown into a series of high-stakes, dino-sized rescues bigger than anything they’ve done before, as they must stop Humdinger before everything on the island goes extinct.

KIDS FIRST! Film Critics Kennedy P. comments, “If you thought the PAW Patrol pups couldn’t get any more adventurous, think again! Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie delivers an action packed journey filled with dinosaurs, laughs, heart, and plenty of heroic moments that had me cheering from beginning to end.” Ryker N. adds, “I was surprised by Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie! The storyline is much more intense and action- packed than the previous Paw Patrol movies while keeping some of the recurring themes such as the corrupt Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo) and Marshall’s (Carter Young) mishaps.” See their full reviews below.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie
By Kennedy P., KIDS FIRST!  Film Critic, age 12

If you thought the PAW Patrol pups couldn’t get any more adventurous, think again! Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie delivers an action packed journey filled with dinosaurs, laughs, heart, and plenty of heroic moments that had me cheering from beginning to end. From the moment the pups arrive on a mysterious dinosaur island, the movie keeps the excitement going with thrilling rescues, funny moments, and lovable characters. As a longtime fan of the franchise, I loved seeing the pups tackle a brand new adventure while introducing an exciting new member of the team.

The story follows Ryder and the Paw Patrol pups after a powerful storm strands them on a hidden island where dinosaurs still roam. There, they meet Rex, a dino obsessed Bernese Mountain Dog who knows everything there is to know about the prehistoric creatures and helps guide the team through the island. Meanwhile, their longtime rival, Mayor Humdinger, creates chaos by mining for diamonds, accidentally awakening a volcano and putting everyone, including the dinosaurs, in danger. It’s up to Ryder, the pups, and Rex to work together, save the island, and prove once again that no rescue is too big and no pup is too small.

The animation is vibrant, colorful, and absolutely stunning, bringing the lush dinosaur island to life with beautiful landscapes and exciting action sequences. Every dinosaur is full of personality, while the pups remain just as lovable as ever. The talented voice cast helps every character feel fun, relatable, and memorable. One of the biggest highlights is meeting Rex (Hayden Chamberlen), who gives the courageous pup so much heart and humor. Rex uses a high-tech wheeled harness for his hind legs, and it’s especially meaningful that Hayden, who uses a wheelchair in real life, brings authentic representation to the role. McKenna Grace once again shines as the voice of Skye, bringing warmth, confidence, and bravery to one of the franchise’s most beloved pups.

The film’s message is about teamwork, courage, kindness, and believing in yourself. It reminds us that everyone has unique strengths and that differences can become superpowers when we work together. The film also celebrates inclusion through Rex’s character, showing that heroes come in many forms. With positive messages, exciting adventure, plenty of laughs, and no inappropriate content, this is a cute, safe, and family-friendly movie that Paw Patrol fans will resonate with and it might create a lot of new Paw Patrol fans.

I give Paw Patrol The Dino Movie 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 8, plus adults. It releases in theaters Friday, August 14, 2026.

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie                                                                                                                                                                         By Ryker N., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 10

I was surprised by Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie! The storyline is much more intense and action- packed than the previous Paw Patrol movies while keeping some of the recurring themes such as the corrupt Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo) and Marshall’s (Carter Young) mishaps.

In Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, a huge storm causes the PAW Patrol ship to crash on an unknown island where dinosaurs exist. The squad teams up with a local pup named Rex (Hayden Chamberlen) and a baby dinosaur to save the island from Humdinger’s greedy diamond mining which causes a dormant volcano to erupt.

This adventurous film has some suspenseful scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat. One stressful scene, resulting from one of Humdinger’s disasters, involves a giant dino getting stuck between two rock cliffs and it’s up to the Paw Patrol’s teamwork to save him. I like how the screenplay, written by Bob Barlen, Cal Brunker, Keith Chapman, incorporates nature into the scenes in creative ways. One example is how they use giant tree leaves to make hang gliders showing that, if you take the time to look for it, nature gives you everything you need. Given that the story takes place on an island, it’s fun to see the Patrol get cool new jungle survival suits for their latest mission. I really like it when movies carry over common themes from a previous film in the franchise. In this case, it’s Marshall’s classic catchphrase, “I’m okay,” which always makes me laugh. The graphics are very cutting edge, less cartoon-like, and more realistic than the previous two Paw Patrol films. But honestly, I like the old school graphics better. The official soundtrack has energetic music by the Backstreet Boys that keeps the theater vibe exciting throughout the movie.

This film’s message is about teamwork, never giving up and learning from your mistakes.  Ryder (Henry Bolan) consistently coaches the Paw Patrol to work together during their missions. He encourages Marshall when he gets down on himself for making mistakes by saying, “I didn’t pick you because you don’t make mistakes, I picked you because you are the Pup that NEVER gives up!”

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie gets 4 out of 5 stars from me and I recommend it for ages 5 to 8, plus adults. The film releases in theaters on August 14, 2026.
