The Boxcar Children: Surprise Island

By Samantha M., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 18

Summer is just around the corner, and there’s no better way to start it than by watching this alluring animated film. I could not stop smiling the entire time, because I felt as if I was at the beach, enjoying my summer vacation. With humorous jokes, unexpected challenges and adorable animals, you will become captivated for the full hour and a half. If you are trying to figure out your fun plans for summer vacation, all you need to do is watch this film.

The Alden children have just begun their summer vacation and are truly ecstatic. After running home joyfully to see their grandfather, the kids are presented with exciting news, they are going to spend summer break on their grandfather’s secret island. Little do they know, their summer will be filled with marvelous adventures, since they have to do everything on their own. But, the kids end up meeting a boy living on the island named Joe, who has a hidden secret. Join Benny, Henry, Jessie and Violet (four orphaned brothers and sisters) as they have the vacation of a lifetime.

Benny, played by Carter Sand, is such an optimistic, inquisitive young boy. He always wants to help his family, such as asking to drive his grandfather’s boat. Jessie, played by Joey King, is a responsible girl with a big heart. She looks out for Benny and gives him his teddy bear when he needs it. I admire her compassion, because she exemplifies the perfect sister. John Alden, played by Dane DeHaan, is humble and thoughtful. He plants an entire garden for the kids to admire. I cannot wait to have my own garden when I am older.

The animation is impeccable. For a few moments during the film, I felt as if I had time traveled from the movie theater to the beach. I could not help but envision myself next to waves, listening to the beautiful sounds of nature. My favorite part is when all of the kids make their own first dinner. Once they sit down at the table, they begin feeding their dog some bread. This is hilarious, because it reminds me of how I always feed my dogs extra food. Dogs are adorable, and, no matter how much food you give them, they will always beg for more.

The message of this film is that when you work as a team, anything is possible. No matter what challenges there are in this world, you can transcend them. Life is short, so we need to make the best of it. Next time you feel that the world is not on your side, just remember that everything happens for a reason. These kids teach us to enjoy summer vacation and to never give up. If they can do this, so can we.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for kids ages 6 to 12. It is the perfect family-friendly film, because you will see how important family truly is to the Alden children.

This film will be offered as an after school by Fathom Events for one day only, on May 8th, 2018. So, go check it out. If you are ever stuck on an island, don’t worry. This film will show you how to make an island your next home.

The Boxcar Children: Surprise Island

By Morgan B., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 13

Surprises, mysteries and new things to explore sounds like a lot of fun for the Boxcar Children so I suggest joining them on this new adventure to a mysterious island. I really enjoyed the funny characters, amazing animation and unique story line –  all of which bring this film and its story to life.

One thing that is mind blowing about this film is the animation. While I watched it, I noticed all the tiny details and how lifelike the characters look. I believed multiple times that I was actually exploring the island with them and felt like I was part of the action. The animation is that good. There is lots of eye candy to look at with great depth so it almost seems to be in 3D even though it isn’t.  This makes the film very enjoyable and it widens the age rage so older kids would enjoy it as well as younger ones.

Carter Sand as Benny is just adorable. He is very quirky and reminds me of my younger friends.  I also like him because he is good hearted and loves his siblings as much as the whole wide world. That is a trait that I think we all should share.  J. K. Simmons as Dr. Moore is superb. I did a Farmers commercial once with Mr. Simmons and found him as charming off screen as on. He was an absolute pleasure to work with.

Joey King as Jessie is a smart, lovely young lady. I have interviewed her many times and she is just adorable and personable. The only difference is that last time I saw her she was wearing reindeer ears and in this film she is the older sibling who knows how to cook. I like seeing her cook delicious foods from scratch such as clam chowder, cooked peas and carrots, apple pie and other foods. It made me hungry for dinner.

Martin Sheen as James Alden plays a gracious and kind character. Everyone would love a grandfather like him because he is so kind to others, especially his grandchildren. He is willing to do anything to make them happy and even takes them to a special island for the summer. That is what I call great grand parenting.

One thing that I don’t like about this film is that the story is sometimes way too slow.  Also, they have a mystery that they discover that goes unsolved. It is weird that the story didn’t pursue that. It showed up and then they just dropped it. Other than that, the film is adorable and has a lot heart for families.

I recommend this film for ages 5 to 12 and give it 4 out of 5 stars. This will play in more than 700 theaters as an after school screening on May 8, thanks to Fathom Event. So, go check it out!

Pup Star: World Tour

Pup Star is back and bigger than ever, as the hit singing pup competition goes global! I am totally into this movie! It is absolutely hilarious – very entertaining, witty, sassy, incredible and completely a family Friday- night movie to enjoy. It is also perfect for dog lovers.

I love this heart-warming film because it is different, talking dogs… now that’s pretty different. The dogs bring a fun and quirky style with the singing and dancing that will bring the best out of you. This is definitely a fun, big scale musical adventure.

The story follows Tiny, a charming Yorkie, as she joins the launch of the Pup Star World Tour as a celebrity judge. It takes the popular singing dogs on a trip around the world where Tiny and friends find wonderful new songs to sing from different countries. Each judge chooses their favorite contestant to compete for the new title of Global Pup Star Champion. This film literally makes you get up and dance. When the contest faces a severe threat from a trio of conspirators, you have go see the movie to find out how that is resolved.

Directed and written by Robert Vince, the lead characters and the talent that voices them include Tiny (Kaitlyn Maher), Julio (Jorge Diaz), Grandpa Growl (John Ratzenberger), Simon Growl (Steve Valentine), Bark (George Newbern), Shep (Reggie De Leon), Rover (Jonathon Mangum), Jimmy Kibble (Brian Hull), Steven (David DeLuise), Butch (Danny Woodbury), Raji (Maulik Pancholy), Lou (Makenzie Moss), Ming (April Hong), Juan (Steve Zaragoza), Kano (Diedrich Bader), Dog Gnarly (Ziggy Marley) and many more.

The dogs’ costumes are glamorous, with all the sparkles, glitter and beautiful colors. The colors really bring great visual effects to the film. When all the dogs from different countries come out to sing in their cultural customs, it really drew my attention. I loved seeing all the different backgrounds and vibes in all of the dogs. The music is remarkable. It really fits the theme of the film and paints pictures of all the different cultures.

My favorite characters are Tiny, who unquestionably is the most adorable judge, Shep, the funny service manager and Julio, the Mexican pup with a big heart. Most importantly, all the characters are amazing. My absolute favorite part is when the cheaters (I’m not going to tell you who they are) get disqualified from the competition.

The message of the story is “cheaters never win; winners never cheat.” I’ll admit, I’ve never understood the utility of cheating. This film definitely calls you to action. It has a positive message that promotes positive social behavior.  I give this film 5 out of 5 stars and definitely recommend it for ages 5 to 14 years old, as well as adults. The film will be released on May 5, 2018 in Canada and USA so look for it!

Rock Royalty Nancy Wilson, Liv Warfield, Slash in LA Zoo Beastly Ball Concert for Conservation

Rock super group Roadcase Royale’s Nancy Wilson, one of the founding members of legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group Heart, and Liv Warfield, former Prince’s New Power Generation band member/R&B singer, join rock icon Slash, renowned pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, the L.A. All-Star Band led by Music Director Martin Guigui, and others to headline an extraordinary “Concert For Conservation” at the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association BEASTLY BALL on Saturday, May 19, 2018, 5:30 pm, at the L.A. Zoo, a leader in the preservation of some of the world’s most critically endangered species and their habitats. Showcasing the enormous impact the Zoo has on animal conservation both locally and internationally, this year’s signature fundraiser takes place on the heels of national Endangered Species Day to underscore the Zoo’s commitment to saving animals from extinction. The Ball honors animal expert/conservationist Jack Hanna and features a rare after-hours stroll through the Zoo with special animal experiences, including animal feedings, keeper chats and up close interactions; the debut of a conservation mural by artist/Beautify Earth Co-Founder Ruben Rojas; bountiful fare from some of L.A.’s most popular restaurants; a mobile-bidding silent auction and more. Guests are invited to dress in “safari casual” attire. Honorary Chair Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles, is joined by Honorary Committee members Slash, Lance Bass, Jackie Chan, Heather Mycoskie and Pauley Perrette. Beastly Ball Chair is GLAZA Trustee Tyler Kelley. Considered the “wildest” party in town, the Ball has been lauded as “one of the best parties in Los Angeles” (KCBS/KCAL TV News) and “one the most important fund-raisers” (Los Angeles Times).

“In a time of rapid global species loss and disappearing habitats, the leadership role that the L.A. Zoo takes to safeguard wildlife while educating people and connecting them with nature has never been more important,” says Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) President Connie Morgan. “With the Beastly Ball, our biggest fundraiser, GLAZA continues our more than 50 years of support for the Zoo’s local and global work in conservation and education.”

L.A. Zoo Director John Lewis adds, “As Connie says, connecting people with wildlife is one of the Zoo’s important obligations. And an effective way to do just that is through storytelling. That is why I am so glad we are recognizing Jack Hanna at this year’s Beastly Ball. Though his stories and shared experiences he has connected millions of people with the beauty and wonder of wildlife and the challenges they face.”

Hanna receives the prestigious Tom Mankiewicz Leadership Award, joining previous honorees the National Geographic Society (2017), actor/environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr. (2016), entertainer/philanthropist Lance Bass (2015), entertainment industry attorney Ken Ziffren (2014), actresses Pauley Perrette (2013) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (2012) and Slash, a GLAZA Trustee (2011). Hanna’s hands-on approach has won him widespread acclaim as Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds, conservationist, author, television personality, and lifelong adventurer. Recognized around the country as America’s favorite zookeeper, he is host of TV’s Emmy award winning Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild and Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown. The award he’ll receive was established in memory of former GLAZA Chairman Tom Mankiewicz, a beloved and highly regarded film and television writer and director. Mankiewicz, who passed away in 2010, was associated with such films as SupermanDiamonds Are Forever and Live and Let Die, and the Hart to Hart television series, among many others. He championed the cause of saving and protecting wildlife and the environment through education and on-the-ground conservation. He also promoted the Zoo’s universal appeal and its accessibility as a gathering place for all in Los Angeles’ diverse communities.

“I am honored to be receiving the Tom Mankiewicz Leadership Award at the Beastly Ball this year,” says Hanna. “Over the last 40+ years, I’ve been lucky to spend my career working to inspire others to care about wildlife – but the work I’ve done is in large part due to the inspiration I gained early in my career from places like the L.A. Zoo. I’m looking forward to celebrating the amazing work being done in Los Angeles and beyond.”

Featured muralist Ruben Rojas, whose animal conservation mural will be debuted at the Beastly Ball, is an artist, social impact entrepreneur, and co-founder of Beautify Earth who is influenced by media and the urban landscape. A native Angeleno, Rojas has painted in New York, Los Angeles, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, France, and for many private clients. He has received commissions from brands such as Zappos, American Express, Heineken, Lululemon, Reebok, Westfield Malls and GT Kombucha as well as from the cities of Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Los Angeles.

The mobile-bidding silent auction – also open to those who can’t attend in person — is comprised of hundreds of remarkable items, and Auctioneer Billy Harris leads a live auction with one-of-a-kind opportunities. Among the silent and live auction items are an original painting created for the Zoo by Ruben Rojas, combined with an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience at Elephants of Asia; a fabulous vacation stay in the treehouse room at Playa Viva, a luxury environmentally-conscious resort, located near Zihuatanejo, Mexico; an LAPD Air Support ride-along; sports experiences in L.A. Clippers and L.A. Dodgers suites; VIP tickets to tapings of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Jeopardy!”; and much more.

Among the iconic restaurants donating their services for dinner are Antonio’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant, Barrel & Ashes, Bottlefish, Celestino Ristorante, Delicious Arts, El Cholo – Los Angeles, El Coyote Mexican Café, The Federal Bar, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Malbec Argentinian Cuisine, Milk and Eggs, Momed, Red O, Simmzy’s, Smoke House Restaurant, Sugar Babies Cupcakery, Taix French Restaurant, Taste Of The Wild Catering at the Los Angeles Zoo and Thug Kitchen.

Nancy Wilson, one of the founding members of the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group Heart, has teamed up with former Prince’s New Power Generation band member and R&B singer Liv Warfield to form the soulful, rock super group, Roadcase Royale.  The band, which Rolling Stone says “…builds a funky, nimble groove, led by Warfield’s soulful belting and the acoustic/electric guitar attack of Wilson…” recently released their debut album, First Things First.    In addition to Wilson (guitar) and Warfield (vocals), Roadcase Royale features Ryan Waters (lead guitarist) along with Heart members Chris Joyner (keys), Dan Rothchild (bass), and Ben Smith (drums).

Slash, the iconic American rock guitarist, songwriter and film producer, has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, garnered a Grammy Award and seven Grammy nominations and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Time magazine recently named Slash #2, behind Jimi Hendrix, on its “Ten Best Electric Guitar Players of All-Time” list. In addition to being a rock legend, Slash is also a long-time supporter and Trustee of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association.

Robert Randolph, pedal steel guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, is leader of Robert Randolph and the Family Band and an inspiration to the likes of Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Derek Trucks, all of whom have played with him and studied his technique. When Randolph discovered rock, funk, soul, jazz and the jam band scene, he forged his own sound by fusing elements of those genres. The band’s first album, 2002’s Live at the Wetlands, was recorded at the now defunct jam band haven, and was followed by four studio albums and another live set, each widening the band’s audience. The Grammy-nominated Got Soul is the band’s label debut for Sony Masterworks, and Randolph is on the road this spring and summer with new music on the way.

All Star Band Music Director Martin Guigui is an award winning filmmaker, composer, executive producer and Grammy nominated music producer/engineer. He has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Daryl Hall, Lyle Lovett, Jose Feliciano, Smokey Robinson, David Byrne, Richie Sambora and many others. The L.A. All-Stars, one of the premiere back up bands, has a rotating cast of monster musicians including Kenny Aronoff, Carmine Rojas, Tal Bergman, Mike Merritt, Joe Sublett, Phil Lo Presti, John Burk, Scott Page, to name a few. The All-Stars have backed most top artists in every genre and performed at major events, network and cable shows. Among the band members for the Beastly Ball are stellar bassist Mike Merritt, who has been the backbone of the Conan O’Brien Show Band for 25 years, and has performed with major artists including Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and others; legendary sax man Joe Sublett, anchor of the Texicali Horns, who has played with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Taj Mahal, Little Feat and The Rolling Stones and more; and Phil Lopresti, the versatile eclectic guitarist who has played with Billy Gibbons, Jose Feliciano, Allman Brothers, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lyle Lovett and Richie Sambora, to name a few.

The landmark Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, drawing nearly 1.8 million visitors each year, is home to a diverse collection of 1,100 animals representing 250 different species, of which more than 60 are endangered or critically endangered, as well as a botanical collection comprising over 800 different plant species with approximately 7,000 individual plants. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), whose members meet rigorous professional standards for animal welfare, the Zoo has achieved renown as an international leader in the preservation of endangered species and a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife. Its responsibility toward wildlife conservation not only encompasses safeguarding the animals in its care but also actively participating in the preservation of some of the world’s most critically endangered species and their habitats. The Zoo’s many conservation successes include having led the charge in saving California condors from extinction and restoring populations of these critically endangered animals to their native habitats.

The Zoo’s lush grounds on 113 acres feature Rainforest of the Americas, an extraordinary collection of endangered and exotic mammals, reptiles, fish and amphibians living in spaces that exemplify their natural habitat in the rainforest biosphere; Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains, home to one of the largest troops of chimpanzees in the United States; Red Ape Rain Forest, where visitors can walk among orangutans; the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles); Elephants of Asia; Campo Gorilla Reserve; and one of the largest flocks of flamingos in any zoo in the world. Tips on How to Help Your Kids Adjust to a Big Move

Moving is what you make of it. It could be because you can no longer afford your dream house and need to down-size, or it could be to move to a better location. What matters when you move is your outlook, and this is especially true when you have children with you. Children look to you for how they feel, and if you appear stressed or upset with the move, they will copy your behavior immediately. This is true of young children and older children alike, though the older they are, the more attached they will be to their old home, their friends, and their way of life.

Moving is a big deal, and it can be huge for children if it’s their first time, which is why you should follow this guide so that you can help your kids adjust and enjoy the experience:

Don’t Hide It

There are many ways you can build up to telling your children that you need to move. You can start with pointing out all of the flaws in your home. How it doesn’t have enough space or it doesn’t have a backyard. The more you point out these flaws and then daydream about a better property that fixes those solutions, the better. Done right you can get your kids excited for the move long before they even know it is happening.

Once you feel that it is time to begin your house hunt, tell them immediately. Make it an exciting adventure – a new life in a new home that will be better than their old one. This applies whether you are getting a bigger home or down-sizing, so long as you make it seem like a positive experience.

Tips on House Hunting

Young children can become very distracting during property viewings, and if you spend all your time watching them instead of looking at the house, you will have a harder time deciding which one is right for you. Instead, let your parents babysit for a day and view the properties by yourselves first. Then come back to your top three choices or top choice with your children to show them around and see what they think of your new place. It doesn’t matter if you have made up your mind already or not, getting their opinion before you buy it will be a huge step towards making them excited for the big move.

To help get green-light verdict, go through your top choices and encourage your kids to imagine their lives there. Where will their toys go? Which way will their bed be facing? If your kids can imagine their lives and are excited, you’ve done your part.

Make Their New Home Familiar

If you live close enough to easily drive to your new home, make use of it. Take your kids to explore their new neighborhood and even sign them up for local organizations. Do this, and your move won’t be to a new place, but to somewhere they already have friends and memories. The extra effort it takes to drive the distance will be so worth it when your children already have friends to hang out with the day they move in.

Take the Stress Out of Moving Day

Moving can be very stressful, and if your children see your stress and frustration, they can mimic that behavior and make things worse. Rather than sour their first experience in their new home, take the stress out of moving. Suddath movers in San Francisco can take care of all your moving needs, including packing. This gives you the time to take your kids to your new property early so explore their new neighborhood before everything comes in.

Make their first day in their new home a fun experience. Be together as a family and show them that things will only be better from here on out. Order in a pizza, watch a movie, play tag around your home and whatever else your family loves doing.

Moving can be a great experience for the whole family, if done right. Include your children as much as possible, and do your best to be positive and optimistic for them. The more excited you are, and the more you help them imagine what their new lives will be like, the more excited your children will be. Enroll your kids in local organizations before you move, and you can make your new place feel like home before they even move in.
