‘Tis the Season for Giving as Hundreds of Universal Studios Hollywood Employees Volunteer at Six Los Angeles-based Charity Projects in Support of the Theme Park’s 12th Annual “Day of Giving” Community Outreach Program on Thursday, November 10

unnamed

As part of Universal Studios Hollywood’s annual “Day of Giving” community outreach event, hundreds of employee volunteers will band together to bring magic to six LA-based non-profit community organizations on Thursday, November 10, 2016.

The inspirational “Day of Giving” event is a yearly Universal Studios Hollywood tradition designed to connect employees with diverse community organizations, many of which are beneficiaries of the Discover A Star Foundation whose mission is to empower individuals and families to lead more productive and fulfilling lives.

On this 12th “Day of Giving” anniversary, Universal Studios Hollywood will serve as home base for two of the six event locations, hosting Operation School Bell and Habitat for Humanity.

In support of Operation School Bell, 250 homeless children from over 20 LAUSD elementary and middle schools will be treated to new clothing, sneakers and school supplies, followed by an afternoon of theme park fun that includes a visit to “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter TM,” a chance to visit with Minions and experience the popular “Despicable Me Minion Mayhem” ride and “Super Silly Fun Land” play zone, and venture aboard the world-famous Studio Tour to experience the epic “Fast & Furious – Supercharged” thrill ride.

For the first time, Habitat for Humanity will join the “Day of Giving” roster with employee volunteers crafting elaborate playhouses to accompany homes built by the organization.

The day-long event will also send hundreds of employee volunteers around Los Angeles  to help support community-building efforts at the following organizations:  AIDS Project L.A. (APLA), where employees will volunteer at the North Hollywood food pantry and help assemble food bags for clients; Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where volunteers will visit patients, distribute gifts and assist with arts & crafts; Project Angel Food, where employee volunteers will prepare and package meals for terminally ill clients; and Shane’s Inspiration, where employees will take part in a “play date” with special needs children at a nearby Shane’s Inspiration playground.

Supported by Universal Studios Hollywood, Discover A Star Foundation is committed to making a significant impact in local underserved communities by providing grants to deserving non-profit organizations. Originally founded in 1995, Discover A Star’s mission is to provide financial assistance to neighboring nonprofit groups.  To date, Discover A Star Foundation has raised over $8 million and provided financial assistance to over 65 non-profit organizations.

Universal Studios Hollywood™ is The Entertainment Capital of L.A. and includes a full-day, movie-based theme park and Studio Tour. As a leading global entertainment destination, Universal Studios Hollywood delivers highly themed immersive lands that translate to real-life interpretations of iconic movie and television shows. Zoo.  Awarded USA Today’s 2015 “10 Best Zoo Lights” honor, L.A. Zoo Lights sets the Zoo aglow in wonder and delight to top everyone’s “holiday must” destination list with a fanciful menagerie of animal characters brought to “life,” LED lights by the thousands, giant illuminated snowflakes, a “red-carpet” 50th Anniversary party celebrating the Zoo’s Golden Year, a disco ball forest, glittering twinkle tunnels, stunning 3-D animated projections, and much more.  Guests this year enjoy a range of breathtaking new features, among them a laser show set to music boasting majestic screens of water with projections of fanciful animation and an animal shadow puppet installation complete with interactive photo-op and a new waterfall feature in the Children’s Zoo.  A giant illuminated snake atop the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles), which made its debut last year, flicks its tongue at Zoo Lights visitors this time around as they approach past a bigger, brighter spider web hanging in the courtyard.  Inside the LAIR, guests are bathed in ultraviolet light for a black light party with scurrying “insects” above the rock walls.  L.A. Zoo Lights 2016 also presents a discounted all-ages $9 Early Bird admission available online only for November 18 to 23 and November 28 to December 1, a new unlimited-visits Season Pass, exclusive HOLIDAY HAPPY HOURS for ages 21-and-up on December 8 and 15 and a FAMILY NEW YEAR’S EVE for all ages.

An instant hit since its 2014 debut, L.A. Zoo Lights captivates guests for an ideal family outing, meet-up with friends or date night with self-guided 60- to 90-minute walking tour through select areas of the Zoo.  While most animal residents are asleep, visitors can view the LAIR’s amphibians, invertebrates and reptiles as well as enjoy the only opportunity in Los Angeles to see a real reindeer family comprised of two adults and two adorable babies.  A glittering snow-covered setting for photos with Santa Claus, available for an additional fee on select dates, captures holiday memories, and the Zoo’s hand-crafted Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel is open during L.A. Zoo Lights, with $3 per person on-site tickets.  L.A. Zoo Lights has attracted nearly 350,000 people over a two-year span, a vast number of whom consumed some 10,000 gallons of steaming hot chocolate and more than 30,000 irresistible churros in 2015.  The aforementioned goodies and other seasonal treats and light-themed souvenirs are available for sale.

Established by the private, non-profit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) as a festive annual tradition, LA Zoo Lights 2016/17 celebrates not only the Zoo’s 50th anniversary but also its important role as an international leader in the preservation of endangered species, a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife and a special place for people of all ages in the world’s entertainment capital.

Returning this year are “VIP Experiences,” including two exclusive HOLIDAY HAPPY HOURs for the 21-and-up crowd on Thursday, December 8 with an “Ugly Sweater” theme, and Thursday, December 15 with a “60s-Style Cocktail Party” theme, as well as a FAMILY NEW YEAR’S EVE for all ages.  The two HOLIDAY HAPPY HOUR evenings feature “skip-the-line” express entry to L.A. Zoo Lights at 6 pm with a private lounge from 6:30 to 8:30 pm including hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine and hot and cold specialty cocktails.  Tickets for HOLIDAY HAPPY HOUR are $75 per person.  FAMILY NEW YEAR’S EVE on Saturday, December 31, 6 pm, provides an opportunity to celebrate the coming of 2017 in style with “skip-the-line” express entry to L.A. Zoo Lights, dinner buffet, soft drinks, complimentary champagne for adults, sparkling apple cider for kids, dessert, a ride on the conservation carousel, games, DJ dance party, cash bar and live broadcast of New York’s Times Square ball drop at 9 pm, after which guests are welcome to experience L.A. Zoo Lights until closing.  FAMILY NEW YEAR’S EVE tickets are $69 for adults and $45 for children, or $64 (adults) and $40 (children) for GLAZA members.  Tickets for all three “VIP Experiences” have limited availability, so early purchase is strongly suggested.

Sponsors of L.A. Zoo Lights include Service Systems Associates, 99 Cents Only Stores, Lyft, metroPCS, and Paramount.

The landmark Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, drawing 1.75 million visitors each year, is home to a diverse collection of 1,100 animals representing 250 different species, many of which are rare or endangered, as well as a botanical collection comprising over 800 different plant species with approximately 7,000 individual plants.  Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), whose members meet rigorous professional standards for animal welfare, the Zoo has achieved renown as an international leader in the preservation of endangered species and a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife.  The L.A. Admission to L.A. Zoo Lights is $9 with online purchase for all ages and times during the Early-Bird admission period from November 18 to 23 and November 28 to December 1.  Thereafter, admission prices vary and start at $14 for adults and $11 for children ages 2 to 12.  GLAZA members enjoy ticket discounts of up to 33%.  Children under age 2 are free.  This year’s new unlimited-access L.A. Zoo Lights Season Pass, with express entry privileges nightly, is $49 for adults and $44 for children ages 2 to 12 (Holiday Happy Hour and Family New Year’s Eve benefits require a separate ticket).  Tickets for HOLIDAY HAPPY HOUR are $75 per person (ages 21 and up).  FAMILY NEW YEAR’S EVE tickets are $69 for adults and $45 for children ages 2 to 12, or $64 (adults) and $40 (children) for GLAZA members.  All L.A. New Augustine Native Plant Nursery Opens at Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve

Irvine Ranch Conservancy in partnership with OC Parks is pleased to announce the opening of the new Augustine Native Plant Nursery in Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve, with public programs beginning Nov. 13. Volunteers can now care for young plants at the Augustine nursery, in addition to the Native Plant Nursery at the City of Irvine’s Quail Hill Trailhead.

Planning for the Augustine Native Plant Nursery began in spring 2015, and the new structure will officially open for registered programs on Nov. 13. Volunteers can plant seeds, transplant seedlings, and care for native plants, all while surrounded by a backdrop of beautiful, expansive coast live oak trees.

The Augustine Native Plant Nursery is the Conservancy’s second nursery; the Quail Hill Native Plant Nursery is located at the Quail Hill Trailhead in the City of Irvine. Both nurseries are an extension of the Irvine Ranch Conservancy’s mission to protect, restore and enhance the natural resources of the Landmarks through stewardship of the open space. All native seedlings grown at the Augustine and Quail Hill Native Plant Nurseries support habitat restoration projects throughout the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks.

“The plan to create satellite nurseries was set in motion to expand community-driven habitat stewardship on the land,” said Matilde De Santiago-Barrows, Irvine Ranch Conservancy Community Stewardship Coordinator. “The Augustine and Quail Hill nurseries restore and protect the land, but it’s our hope that they also inspire people of all ages to find a love of the Landmarks.”

Both nurseries welcome nature lovers age 6 and older to work comfortably at tables in shaded structures, where seedlings are thinned out and transplanted before being used at habitat restoration sites throughout the Landmarks.  Feel the earth beneath your fingertips during green winter months at the Irvine Ranch Conservancy nurseries, and help propagate native species and grow seedlings in the same location they will be planted. Join volunteers at the Augustine Nursery on Nov. 13 by registering here, and join volunteers at the Quail Hill Nursery on Nov. 6 and 15 by registering here. All programs are free and open to the public with required pre-registration. No experience is necessary, and all tools and training are provided. For more information on the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks, visit www.LetsGoOutside.org.

evergreen-movie-ad

I just learned about a great app that is a must-try if you love to go to the movies! It’s a new new social, movie ticketing app called Atom Tickets!

With Atom Tickets, families can buy movie tickets to the latest premieres straight from their phone and even pre-order their favorite movie treats at select theaters. We’ve eliminated ever waiting in line with the kids as you simply scan your QR code at tablets upon arriving to the theater and pick up pre-prepared snacks at the Atom Express Lane. Pick your seats and change them at any time using the reserve seating feature and even send your husband/wife a screenshot of his ticket so he/she can come in separately after parking the car. Going to the movies has never been easier and in just a couple easy steps families can book tickets, order concessions, choose seats and skip the lines at their next movie.

This fall, plan the perfect family night out without all the hassle and enjoy the anticipated new Disney film MOANA. Download the free app from the App Store or Google Play and enjoy your next movie with Atom Tickets!

This is just the cutest kit!  I gave this to my niece and she just loves it! Her BTFF sits on her bed every day! This gives a very special meaning to the Tooth Fairy!

My BTFF
My Best Tooth Fairy Friend, or BTFF for short, is soon to be a much-loved lifetime companion for kids and a captivating way for parents to be involved in one of their child’s most memorable experiences. BTFF is a spunky, lovable companion for children who are about to lose a tooth. Inside the gift box is everything parents need to create a lifetime of memories. It’s easy and fun for the whole family! This adorable and naughty character was dreamed up by three parents and encourages children to use their imagination. The gift set comes complete with a handmade BTFF doll, a beautifully illustrated book, tooth vessel, keepsake notecards and sticker badges. BTFF magically appears at the first sign of a wiggly tooth and stays until the tooth comes out. When the tooth falls out, My BTFF takes it back to Tooth Fairy Land, leaving behind special notes and stickers. My BTFF comes back at the next sign of a loose tooth. Children get to name their BTFF, and unlike other magical characters, they are encouraged to touch them! Gift set available online at www.mybtff.com; $34.99. Great ideas and activities are available on the website’s blog.
