Stay Safe This Summer With Master Lock

5422D     Style: "PimpE"

The summer travel season has finally arrived! But with almost half of consumers using only the simple precaution of locking their homes’ windows and doors while traveling, Master Lock is reminding travelers of other important to-dos to ensure a safe and enjoyable getaway. Safety is very important tour family and it really is so important when traveling.

I love the following article by our friends at Master Lock!

Master Lock Unlocks Tips to Keep Travelers Safe and

Secure This Summer

With nearly 45 percent of consumers in North America using only the simple precaution of locking their homes’ doors and windows while traveling*, Master Lock is reminding summer travelers that no travel plan is complete without proper safety and security precautions. Whether embarking on a quick weekend road trip or an extended vacation, Master Lock is offering tips to help travelers keep safety top of mind at every step of their journey.

“After one of the worst winters on record, we know people are eager for a getaway,” said Rebecca Smith, vice president, marketing for Master Lock. “As the leading manufacturer of safety and security products, we want to remind travelers to take the necessary precautions that will help prevent vacation time from being dampened by safety and security issues.”

As travelers take to trains (preferred by 3.8 percent of North Americans), planes (24.17 percent) and automobiles (68.58 percent) this summer, Master Lock offers these five security tips:

1. Protect the Home Front – A home that looks deserted makes an easy target for thieves. To keep your home looking occupied, set your lights on a timer and stop your newspaper and mail delivery so it doesn’t build up while you are away. For added security, ask a trusted neighbor to check your home periodically and alert the police of any suspicious activity. Grant easy access to authorized visitors by storing your spare key in a portable key safe, like the Master Lock 5422D.

2. Limit Distractions on the Road – A focused driver is essential for any safe road trip, so plan to limit distractions by muting cell phones and packing provisions to keep young passengers fully entertained. Also, making frequent stops to refuel your body and clear your mind can boost energy and make for a safer journey.

3. Prevent Theft from Luggage – In a recent survey, North Americans said they would be most devastated if their cash (25.59 percent) or their camera (19.91 percent) were stolen from their suitcase*. With only 33 percent of North Americans securing their luggage*, travelers should consider using a TSA-accepted luggage lock to help ensure the contents of their bags remain secure. If possible, keep valuables that would be hard to replace in a carry-on bag so they’re always with you.

4. Protect Your Home Away from Home – Always lock up valuables when away from your room. If your hotel doesn’t offer an in-room safe, bring your own portable 5900D SafeSpaceto keep passports, jewelry and small electronics safe while you and your family are out and about.

5. Take Advantage of Technology – Advancements in technology continue to make travel both easier and safer. A smart idea for keeping kids safe is to take a cell phone picture of them every morning while on vacation. If something happens or if you get separated, you have a recent picture of him/her that shows the exact outfit they are wearing that day. Also, utilize the free Master Lock Vault app and website to store digital copies of important data such as travel documents, insurance cards, passports and medical information for easy access if paper documents are not readily available or are lost.

Bug Bites, Poison Ivy and Rashes… Oh My!

0H3J6609

It’s finally summer and your kids are ready to jump out of their skin – but not from excitement… Despite the copious amounts of bug spray and sunscreen you’ve applied to your little ones, they’ve still been itching and scratching ferociously at their arms and legs after their outdoor adventures. Pretty soon they’ll have scabby skin and teary eyes. You feel helpless: you want to try anti-itch ointments, but you’re not sure which ones are safe enough for their sensitive skin.

We recently received a sample of TriCalm and my son had an insect bite so we tried it. What I liked is that it works quickly! Actually, we only had to apply it twice and there was no more itching. I highly recommend this product as a Must-Have for the Summer!

TriCalm hydrogel is a dermatologist-recommended anti-itch product that provides rapid relief to summer skin irritations associated with insect bites, poison ivy and itchy rashes. It is a safe, steroid-free gel that decreases the sensitivity of the nerve receptors in your skin responsible for sending signals of itching to your brain. Because the gel is steroid-free and does not thin your skin like other ant-itch products, it may be used on sensitive skin and reapplied throughout the day. Easy to administer, fast-acting, affordable and safe, TriCalm retails for $10.49 and is available at CVS, Walmart and Walgreens locations nationwide.

4 Fun Ideas for SoCal City Adults

SM pier

With school ending and the kids at home, it’s easy to get swamped with entertaining the kids and forget that parents need time for themselves to go out and enjoy the beautiful Southern California summer we are so lucky to have. Here are a few fun ideas for you and your adult loved ones to enjoy. Call a sitter, grab a tank top and hail a cab, because summer is here!

1)     Summer Concerts: There’s nothing like listening to live music under the stars in the warm LA weather. Los Angeles is home to tons of outdoor summer concerts this summer, some ranging from famous musicians like Cher to free concerts at the farmer’s market. Either way, a concert is a fun way to enjoy some of the fabulous summer nights we have in SoCal.

2)     Food Trucks: Kids (and okay, sometimes adults) line up in front of the ice cream truck as it comes around the neighborhood. Food trucks are like the adult version of the ice cream man, and they’re no longer mobile versions of fast food. Los Angeles hosts some of the most delicious food trucks, some which are world famous and have five star ratings. Check out The Lobsta Truck, which totes their famous lobster roll. The meat is flown in from Maine three times a week.  For a twist on Korean BBQ, try Kogi, a fusion of Asian and latin flavors. We love the short rib tacos.

3)     LA Breweries: Top off those short rib tacos with some local brew! Although often overshadowed by our neighbors down south in San Diego, the LA beer scene is on the rise. Check out some local brewing companies like L.A Aleworks, which is distributed in the area.

4)      Go to a Comedy Show: With tons of talent aspiring to make it big in the city of Angels, LA has a ton of great comedy clubs and shows. Some iconic clubs are the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, which has hosted famous comedians like Dane Cook and Dave Chapelle. The Improv Hollywood, has nightly shows and a great list of comedians, so make sure you head over and get a good laugh!

Cool off During Ice Cream Month with Ice Cream Sandwiches from Nielsen-Massey Vanillas

NMV Mad 2 oz   Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwiches

This July, join Nielsen-Massey Vanillas as they celebrate National Ice Cream Month, as well as National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 20. What started 30 years ago has grown into a much-anticipated opportunity for kids and adults alike to cool off on warm summer days with ice cream treats of all types, including homemade ice cream sandwiches – currently one of the hottest dessert trends. I don’t know about your family, but we are big fans of ice cream in my house!  My son and I just recently baked cookies and made ice cream sandwiches out of them. One of our favorite things to do is to roll the sides (as mentioned below!) in sprinkles. We love the Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwiches recipe from Nielsen-Massey Vanillas! (Keep reading for the recipe!)

Whether you want to be a star at the Summer Block Party or you are looking for a fun recipe for baking with kids this summer, making homemade ice cream sandwiches is sure to be a new family favorite.

Following are some tips and shortcuts for making and personalizing your own homemade ice cream sandwiches:

  • Dress it up: Roll the sides of finished ice cream sandwiches in mini chocolate chips, mini M&Ms, sprinkles, toasted coconut or nuts to add color and texture.
  • Take a shortcut: If you are short on time, purchase bakery cookies to use with the homemade strawberry ice cream recipe, below, to build your own ice cream sandwiches.
  • Chill out: Keeping your homemade ice cream cold is the secret to a sandwich that won’t fall apart or get soggy. Take the time to re-freeze ice cream between steps – your patience will be rewarded with perfect sandwiches every time.
  • Keep them fresh: Wrap each sandwich individually in plastic wrap immediately after building each sandwich. Keep them in the freezer until just before serving.

This brand-new recipe for Strawberry Ice Cream Sandwiches from Nielsen-Massey Vanillas celebrates another summer favorite – fresh strawberries. Nielsen-Massey Tahitian Pure Vanilla Extract and Pure Lemon Extract add depth to the ice cream and complement the sweet summer strawberries. The ice cream rests between homemade chocolate sandwich cookies bursting with flavor from cardamom, Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract and Pure Chocolate Extract for an irresistible summer treat that literally melts in your mouth.

Compelling story reveals the rocky path to recovery from Munchausen Syndrome

Andrea Avigal grew up in a terrifying home.  Her father was vicious and sociopathic.  He ruled and dominated what happened in their home. The only thought she remembers is survival, as her father alternated between brutally beating her mother and raping Andrea at night while her mother slept on the couch.

As a child she felt unloved and lived in constant fear.  As she grew older, the pain and emptiness that remained inside lead her into therapy several times, but she never stayed long enough to work through her childhood trauma. She met a kind man and married, and had three children. For a while, she was able to pretend to be normal.

But then her eldest child was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of two, requiring numerous surgeries, radiation treatment, and two years of chemotherapy. He went into remission, but eight years later, the cancer came back. This time, there was no viable treatment, and he passed away at the age of thirteen.

After she buried her son, she lost the desire and ability to function as a normal person. And while she loved her remaining family, her life went in a new direction.

She began to hurt herself.  She would secretly make herself sick in order to gain attention. Hundreds of hospital visits ensued as she attempted suicide, mutilation, poisoning, and making herself sick again, and again and again.

With her life spinning desperately out of control she found salvation in the form of Dr. Tom Hall.

Andrea’s story along with the unconventional therapeutic relationship that cured her is told in Secrets Unraveled: Overcoming Munchausen Syndrome.

Dr. Hall explains, “Munchausen Syndrome is a rare psychiatric disorder where people make themselves sick to gain medical attention.  They repeat their secret behavior over years, fooling doctors, family members and friends.  Andrea Avigal was an expert.”

Anyone can overcome devastating mental illness with the right kind of help.

Starting in April of 2002, when she became his patient, he had no idea how profoundly she would impact his world.

“Andrea was on a path of self-destruction, flirting with death,” he said.  “I really did not know whether I would be able to save her life.”

Here is an excerpt from the book by Dr. Tom Hall:

“I was impressed by her willingness to delve into the worst memories and her effort to move forward. I found it compelling that she wanted to keep telling me more of her incredible story. It made me feel increasingly motivated to do what I could to pull her out of her suffering. Every time I caught myself having difficulty learning about the explicit details of her past, I reminded myself that she had to live them.”

Dr. Hall and Andrea worked together for several years.  Building a trusting relationship is critical but extremely difficult.  “Patients with Munchausen maintain their deception as a means of survival.  It takes time, extraordinary patience, understanding and hard work to help them”

The intimate emails back and forth reveal the incredible depth of pain Andrea is going through and the soothing touch of a skilled therapist at work time and again.

The lessons learned have powerful and important implications to anyone who is dealing with mental illness.

  • It is crucial to not judge or confront, even when suspicions arise.  Munchausen patients almost always experienced childhood trauma and/or neglect and want a safe place to tell their stories.  Often trauma survivors need to talk about their childhood over and over again.

  • When the therapist offers validation, compassion and a constant presence, secrets of the past and present gradually come out and eventually lose their power.  The desire to be sick loses its appeal.

  • A trusting relationship replaces the safety once found in hospitals from doctors and nurses.

  • When treating Munchausen syndrome, therapists need to consider a less conventional approach, stepping “outside the box,” increasing contact, for example with emails and telephone calls in between sessions.  The healing process will occur through the power of the relationship.

Another excerpt from the book by Dr. Tom Hall:

“I find nothing more meaningful than the bond that connects human beings and the communication that creates that bond. It is something that cannot be predicted or charted, but rather unfolds spontaneously, like all things that are special in life.  Andrea’s therapy unfolded in ways I could never have imagined and ultimately reinforced the power of the relationship.”

I received this book for free and have found it very interesting! I think that this would be a very helpful book for therapists and those in the helping fields. It is quite insightful and an inspirational story.

Recess Monkey

PromoImage

Inspired by the breathtaking creativity and inventiveness of today’s DIY kids, kindie music icon Recess Monkey celebrates “maker” culture with the band’s eleventh studio recording, Wired. (Recess Monkey, $14.99, for ages 3 – 9, run time 43 minutes.)

Wired, a collection of super-eclectic “gadget rock” songs about inventions, machines, and electricity, also highlights the richness of life beyond batteries:  Grandpa’s wisdom, board games, singing with others, storytelling, and the fine art of duct tape.

Wired was produced at John Vanderslice’s famed Tiny Telephone Recording in San Francisco, where everything was recorded on tape with analog equipment.  Recess Monkey found working with John Vanderslice to be like observing the machinations of a mythic alchemist practicing his craft.   Vanderslice and engineer Jamie Riotto created incredible effects “on the spot” during live takes, twisting knobs with one hand while altering the speed of the tape with another, bringing to Recess Monkey the realization that Vanderslice and Riotto weren’t simply producer and engineer, but truly members of the band.

Notes Jack Forman, “It cannot be overstated what huge fans we are of John Vanderslice, and the experience of gettting to make music with him at the helm was downright life-changing.  Removing computers from the recording equation forced us to rely on our ears, as in the days before digital.  This was the perfect approach for an album inspired by ‘outside the box’ creativity!”

Recess Monkey’s trademark over-the-top, loaded-with-humor lyrics are again delivered with the band’s amazing mastery of diverse musical styles.  Wired rolls out of the gate with “Take Your Kid To Work Day.” a track that combines a driving, 8 to the bar rhythm with a super-energized, lyrical bass guitar line and a Mick Jagger-like vocal intensity.  This explosion of energy continues unabated with the next track, “Wired,” anode d’amour to a sugar high with the real treat at the end.  For really serious time travel, check out “Grandpa is a Time Machine” and soak up some old time, ukulele driven, up-tempo two-beat along with Grandpa’s iced tea and endless supply of stories. “Wishing Well” is a score for Beatlemaniacs, enhanced by a guitar solo that pays homage to the great George Harrison.  Other highlights include “Brick by Brick,” where Recess Monkey “puts together” an anthem to Legos, the original “maker” toy, and the hilarious ballad, “Duct Tape World,” in which one boy, one girl, and one million and two rolls of duct tape leads to a front yard business called “On A Roll With You!”

In addition to rocking out with Recess MonkeyJack Forman is an on-air personality on SiriusXM’s Kids Place Live, where his daily call-in show, Live From the Monkey House, is a hysterical cornucopia of game show segments, kid callers, special musical guests, and the best kids’ and family music out there!

Recess Monkey released their debut CD, Welcome to Recess Monkey Town, in 2005, followed by another popular hit, Aminal House, in 2006.  The band made history with their 2007 release, Wonderstuff, the first double CD children’s album.  As with all their albums, including 2008’s Tabby Road, 2009’s Field Trip, 2010’s The Final Funktier, 2011’s In Tents, and 2013’s Deep Sea Diver and Desert Island DiscWired is grounded in real life children’s experiences.

Ten Recess Monkey songs have reached #1 on SiriusXM’s Kids Place Live chart.  Kids Place Live Program Director Mindy Thomas declared, “In this never-ending nationwide talent show of kid and family music, they are most definitely at the top.”  Explained kids’ music authority Stefan Shepherd (Zooglobble.com), “Recess Monkey just keeps turning out album after album with pop nuggets, as if we’d just discovered The Beatles had recorded a ton of kids’ music 40+ years ago.”

My son and I are fans of Recess Monkey and really enjoy this new album! The music is simply fun! My son really enjoys the lyrics and we both give the album a thumbs up!

Wired is available at recessmonkey.comamazon.com,cdbaby.com, theAVCafe.com, bigkids.com, iTunes, bandcamp.com, Silver Platters, Sonic Book Records, and Barnes & Noble.

Self Disclosure: I received the CD free to facilitate this feature.
