Global Genes is proud to introduce this year’s Henri Termeer Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree to be presented on Saturday, September 24th as part of the RARE Champion of Hope Awards.

The Henri Termeer Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at this year’s Tribute event to Honoree Philip Reilly, MD, JD – an individual who has been a champion for patients throughout his career.  “Phil Reilly is a champion of patients.  He is deeply focused on the potential of science to create hope for patients.  He is a leader at this time of true progress in the rare disease field,” commented Henri Termeer, Former President & CEO of Genzyme Corporation.

He is relentless in the search for meaningful treatments and has brought hope and compassion to countless families.”

In addition to his role at Third Rock Ventures, Reilly is a trustee emeritus of Cornell University, an Overseer of Weill Cornell Medical College, and serves on the Advisory Board to the Boston University School of Public Health.

The Henri Termeer Lifetime Achievement Award was created & named in Mr. Termeer’s honor because of his focus and commitment to patients that began over 25 years ago.  Mr. Termeer is a pioneer in biotech, and has committed an entire career to impacting patients with rare disease.  He has been a mentor to many, has developed best practices that have been integrated into most of the successful biotech’s, and has inspired almost all that have worked with or for him.   “Henri is someone who all of us in rare disease aspire to be like, stated Nicole Boice, Founder and CEO Global Genes.  “In fact, this award also epitomizes the spirit of all the Champion of Hope award honorees.  All of those being recognized have similar qualities; courage, focus, tenacity, inspiration, they are game changers and innovators.”

Over 350 individuals and organizations worldwide were nominated by their peers for a RARE Champion of Hope award for their notable efforts in rare disease advocacy, science, collaborative sciences, and medical care and treatment. 5 Favorite Grilling Recipes by Terra’s Kitchen

Warmer weather and brighter evenings call for firing up the grill and getting outside for your dinner prep. I’m not talking about your standard burgers either, I wanted to pass along a few delish recipes from Terra’s Kitchen, meal delivery service, that will satisfy your urge to cook with fire tonight. Here are five of my favorite grilling recipes, just in time for National Grilling Month!
1. The Big Island Steak Bowl – Nothing says, “Summer is almost here,” like this dish inspired by Hawaii. Skip the brutal plane ride, and enjoy the flavors of Waimea Bay in your own backyard with a glass of Riesling while you’re dreaming of white sand beaches.

2. Grilled Lamb with Pan-roasted Asparagus, Olives + Tomatoes – This meal brings back memories of huge family dinners that seemed to last all Sunday. The best part about this one though, is that you can cook it in 30 minutes and share with your favorite people even after a 10-hour workday. From the asparagus to the tomatoes and olives, this dish has just the right amount of the good stuff.

3. Grilled Chicken Tacos with Avocado Goat Cheese Sauce – Grilled chicken is often a backyard barbeque favorite, but go outside the norm and use yours in tacos. Toast your tortillas on the grill for a little extra flavor, and get ready to fall in love with the avocado goat cheese sauce (trust us).

4. Happy Chicken Salad Bowl – A salad on the grill? Yep, it’s possible, and delicious. Bonus points if your grill has a side burner to make the quinoa, so there is no reason to go back inside until bedtime.

5. Grilled Sirloin, Dijon Shallot Smear + Asparagus Salad – Our top grilling picks would not be complete without a steak! If he is anything like mine, your guy will insist on taking control of searing this sirloin to perfection, leaving you nothing to do except open another stout and stoke the conversation.

4oz. Filter Coffee (A balanced Latin-American coffee, such as Counter Culture’s La Voz, Guatemala, works well here)

1/2oz. Honey Syrup

FREE Jazzy ‘Sessions at the Circle’ Series Curated by Jazz at Lincoln Center Takes Center Stage at The Shops at Columbus Circle This Summer

Some of New York’s most dynamic young jazz artists, including trumpeter/Wynton Marsalis protégé Riley Mulherkar and Christie Dashiell of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,’’ will serenade patrons of The Shops at Columbus Circle when the Sessions at the Circle series kicks off its six-week run July 26.

The free evening concerts (Tuesdays, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., through Aug. 30) on the second-level mezzanine are a partnership between The Shops at Columbus Circle and Jazz at Lincoln Center and showcase a range of jazz styles, from the big-band sounds of Zaccai Curtis to smoky renditions of the Great American Songbook by Allyson Briggs and classic tenor saxophone riffs from Camille Thurman.

Families taking a break from shopping won’t want to miss the Jazz for Young People session (Aug. 6), where folks of all ages are invited to swing and sway to joyous rhythms as they learn about the essence of the music.

The free Sessions at the Circle feature an impressive repertoire of musicians:

July 26, 2016 – Camille Thurman with the Darrell Green Trio
Camille Thurman is multi-talented saxophonist, flutist, vocalist, composer and educator. Her lush, velvety sound on the tenor sax has drawn comparisons to masters Gene Ammons and Dexter Gordon, to name a few. Thurman’s  four-octave vocal range and ability to sing vocalese reflects the influences of Minnie Riperton, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. She was a runner-up in the 2013 International Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition and a two-time recipient of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers award. Her compositions were featured and performed by her quartet in the ASCAP/ Kennedy Center “Songwriters: The Next Generation” showcase. Thurman has appeared on BET’s “Black Girls Rock’’ as the saxophonist in the All Star Band led by music director Kim Burse.

August 2, 2016Riley Mulherkar Quartet
Riley Mulherkar has been recognized as a “smart young trumpet player” (The New York Times) and cited by The Wall Street Journal as a “youngster to keep an eye on.”  In 2011, Mulherkar was named a “rising jazz artist” by Wynton Marsalis in JET magazine and in 2014 he was the first recipient of the Laurie Frink Career Grant at the Festival of New Trumpet Music. He has performed at the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne, and Carnegie Hall, and has shared the stage with Marsalis, Leonard Slatkin and Dave Douglas, among others. Mulherkar is a founding member of The Westerlies, a new-music brass quartet that has premiered over 50 original works since its inception in 2011. Their debut album, Wish the Children Would Come on Home, was hailed as “an impressive feat from almost any angle” (Nate Chinen, JazzTimes), and named Debut Album of the Year by NPR Music’s Francis Davis.

August 9, 2016 – Jazz for Young People

August 16, 2016 – Christie Dashiell Quartet
Born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Greenville, NC, contemporary jazz vocalist Christie N. Dashiell honed her skills at Howard University and later at the Manhattan School of Music. Her career  includes performances with Howard’s premiere vocal jazz ensemble, Afro Blue. She has also performed at the Kennedy Center as a participant in the 2010 Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program; at the Lincoln Theater in Washington, D.C.; and, as a part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz for Young People program. She is the recipient of Down Beatmagazine’s Best College Graduate Jazz Vocalist and Outstanding Soloist awards in the jazz vocal category. Most recently, Dashiell appeared on season three of NBC’s The Sing-Off, as a member of Afro Blue. She has performed in concert with Esperanza Spalding, Fred Hammond, Smokey Robinson, Geri Allen, and Allan Harris.

August 23, 2016 – The Curtis Brothers Quartet
Brothers Luques (bass) and Zaccai (piano) Curtis follow in the rich family tradition of jazz. The music has often been the beneficiary of sibling bonds. Look no further than the Adderley brothers (Cannonball & Nat), the Heath Brothers (Percy, Jimmy, and Albert (Tootie), the Brecker Brothers, or more recently the Roney brothers (Wallace & Antoine). Jazz music has frequently been the family tie that binds. Eventually, both brothers continued their studies in Boston, Zaccai at the New England Conservatory, and Luques at Berklee College of Music. The brothers have recorded with a notable discography of cohorts, including Gary Burton, Cindy Blackman-Santana, Donald Harrison, Sean Jones, Brian Lynch & Eddie Palmieri, and John Santos among others. For the Curtis Brothers, music is an affirmation of the basic root sources of jazz. Their music is rife with the blues, swing rhythms in recognition of the Africa-Caribbean-New Orleans lineage, and the basic core elements that make the music such a spicy, hard bop melting pot.

August 30, 2016Fleur Seule
Fleur Seule is an authentic 1940s Jazz, Swing, & Ballroom band that plays hits from all around the world. Songbird/Bandleader Allyson Briggs sings in seven languages to accommodate a wide variety of New York audiences. Briggs is on a mission to revive what she calls “the greatest music ever written’’ for her generation and believes in the power of simplicity, the playfulness of music, and the Great American Songbook. She is an old soul who refined her craft in New York City and has been making great strides in bringing the best of music back for some, and anew to the younger set.

The free performances or “sessions” will be held in the cool indoors of The Shops at Columbus Circle on the second floor mezzanine level. The Shops at Columbus Circle, located in Time Warner Center in the heart off Manhattan, is an iconic indoor and public destination that attracts millions of people a year. It’s the place to dine, shop, live, entertain, work and be entertained. The soaring 2.8 million-square-foot landmark with stunning views of Central Park has transformed Columbus Circle into a cultural portal to Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Encompassing everything from Michelin-starred restaurants to Jazz at Lincoln Center and more than 40 retail stores, boutiques and pop-up experiences, The Shops at Columbus Circle is “an only in New York experience” ideal for residents and visitors alike.

New California Tobacco Laws Go Into Effect

Tobacco 21 Law Images and Graphs-page-008

Effective this past June, the minimum age of sale for tobacco products in California increases from 18 to 21, and for the first time e-cigarettes are added to the existing definition of tobacco products. California is the second state in the nation, following Hawaii, to raise the minimum age for tobacco sales to 21.

“Today marks a significant moment in California history as new tobacco control laws go into effect statewide. This is the first time the Golden State has raised the age of sale for tobacco since the law first took effect 144 years ago,” said Dr. Karen Smith, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) director and state health officer. “Our focus is on reaching more than 34,000 retailers with tobacco licenses and vape shops to provide them the information and resources needed to comply with the new tobacco 21 law.”

To help retailers comply with these new laws, CDPH developed a series of educational materials, including age-of-sale warning signs, window clings reminding customers of the new law and tips to help clerks check identification.

About 34,000 Californians die each year from tobacco use. In addition, tobacco-related diseases cost Californians $18.1 billion each year in both direct and indirect healthcare costs due to premature death and low productivity due to illness.

As part of the new law defining e-cigarettes as tobacco products, e-cigarettes, e-liquids including vaping devices and accessories can no longer be sold in self-service displays. E-cigarettes are also not allowed in locations where smoking has long been prohibited, including public transit, worksites, restaurants, schools and playgrounds. Approximately 217,000 California youth between the ages of 12 and 17 currently smoke traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes.

“California is taking a big step forward in preventing a new generation of young people from becoming addicted to nicotine,” said Dr. Smith. “The surge in e-cigarette use among teens and young adults is no accident. The tobacco industry’s aggressive marketing of e-cigarette gadgets and candy flavors is jeopardizing the health of our young people.”

Many e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive neurotoxin. Research shows that the brain continues to develop until age 25, and nicotine exposure before that age may cause permanent brain damage and fuel a lifelong battle with addiction. According to the California Department of Education’s California Healthy Kids Survey, middle and high school teens are currently using e-cigarettes at much higher rates than traditional cigarettes. Studies also show that teens who use e-cigarettes are three times more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes within a year.

For those struggling with nicotine addiction, resources are available at www.nobutts.org. Californians who want help quitting can call the California Smokers’ Helpline at 1-800-NO BUTTS.

Some more facts:

Tobacco and Youth

  • Research shows that the brain continues to develop until age 25, and nicotine exposure before that age may cause permanent brain damage and fuel a lifelong battle with addiction.
  • According to the California Department of Education’s California Healthy Kids Survey, middle and high school teens are currently using e-cigarettes at much higher rates than traditional cigarettes.
  • Recent longitudinal studies show teens who use e-cigarettes are three times more likely to start smoking within a year.

About the California Tobacco Control Program

The California Tobacco Control Program was established by the Tobacco Tax and Health Protection Act of 1988. California’s comprehensive approach has changed social norms around tobacco-use and secondhand smoke. California’s tobacco control efforts have reduced both adult and youth smoking rates by 50 percent, saved more than one million lives and have resulted in $134 billion worth of savings in health care costs. Learn more at TobaccoFreeCA.com.

About the Food and Drug Branch

The California Department of Public Health, Food and Drug Branch is charged with enforcing the Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement Act, and conducts ongoing illegal sales enforcement operations. California retailers caught selling tobacco products to minors during these enforcement operations are subject to fines up to $6,000.
