Sanderson, you wear it well! Our boy wears doggie clothing as if it were a second skin. And he’s mostly skin! Sanderson, 3 years old, is unique in that he’s covered with a thin, brown fuzz. This confounded the staff and volunteers when he was picked up after being abandoned with three other dogs in a parking lot. After three months of treatment and observation, everyone concluded that Sanderson was a mix of mastiff and Xoloitzcuintle, a hairless dog from Mexico whose breed dates back to the Aztecs. Despite the noble lineage, Sanderson is constantly silly, waggy and happy. He plays joyfully in the play yard with his favorite toy, a stuffed lamb. “In ancient Mexico, the Xolo was considered sacred, and we feel all dogs deserve to be valued, respected and loved,” reads Sanderson’s bio on the shelter’s adoption page. Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS) has geared up its Foster the 4^th program for 2025. The program allows the public to foster animals, big dogs in particular, to make room for all the pets who run in terror from fireworks blasts and wind up in the shelter, if they’re lucky enough not to get killed by a vehicle. LBACS volunteers have recommended dogs who’d make great foster pets, and Silverado is a big favorite among the big dogs! They describe him as awesome, sweet, mellow and fun — a guy who loves to exercise and who’ll motivate you to do the same! Gabi has been living in a shelter kennel far too long. The girl is waiting for you to be the key to unlocking her freedom and happiness. Gabi is only about3 years old, but examination showed that she’d birthed multiple litters, which probably included the young male she came in with. The two were found abandoned and tied up together in front of a public storage facility back in September. Gabi’s son has been adopted, but she’s still waiting for her perfect fit. She’s a beautiful buff color and has eyes that match her coat. She appears to be housebroken and walks well on a leash. She knows her sit and shake commands, and if you’ve got a yummy treat, she might raise both front paws in the air! Gabi will do best in a home without cats. She has a great little prance when she’s happy, and the volunteers long to see her prance her way into a loving, forever home. Fudge is a 100% lap kitty and will stay on your lap until you move her off. She’s guaranteed to enhance your reading and not get in the way of the computer monitor. Other than that, give her a sunny spot near a window and a comfy bed for her aged bones. Fudge looks a little rough thanks to her previous live before Long Beach Animal Care Services took her in. She’s nearly toothless and is on kidney care food and pain meds for arthritis, but so far, she needs no further care except for her lovely heart and soul. Radio, with his marbled nose, has been at Long Beach Animal Care Services for just over a year, and he’s only 3! He was lucky to get a shelter break with a short-term foster, who shared that his favorite things were spending time with people and other dogs, belly rubs, playing fetch and nap time. He also got separation anxiety, so he thrives on company. Radio’s foster family enjoyed his company so much that they extended his foster period from one month to two! But for their two cats, whom they had to keep separate, they’d have kept Radio! Radio would flourish with a patient, dog-savvy owner who could provide structure and guidance with leash manners and basic life skills. “Look, Ma! Look, Pa! I’ve picked up all my toys! Now, c’n I have some string cheese? Huh? Huh? Please?” Peanut is a real nut for affection and attention. As you can see, he enjoys playing and in fact was found last year near the soccer field at one of the local high schools. No owner claimed him as either a team member or their dog, so he came to Long Beach Animal Care Services. With his friends, the volunteers, Peanut walks jauntily on leash, rolls in the grass and smiles big, and of course, cleans up his toys.
