Aquarium’s Sixth Annual Urban Ocean Festival

The Aquarium of the Pacific hosted its sixth annual Urban Ocean Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, 2015. The Pacific waters off Southern California hosted an array of industrial and recreational activities and provided habitat for a diverse group of animals. Visitors to the festival learned more about our urban ocean. The festival  included art exhibitions, The Trashin’ Fashion Show and contest for designs using recycled materials, mural painting, poetry readings, booths, live band performances, educational activities, sustainable seafood cooking demonstrations, and more. The Urban Ocean Poetry boat cruise was also available during the weekend at an additional cost and Urban Ocean Cruises will occur monthly throughout the summer.

COST:           The festival was free to Aquarium members and included with general admission for the public. General admission: $28.95 adult (12+), $25.95 senior (62+), $14.95 child (3-11), and free for children under age three and Aquarium members. Additional cost for cruises.  Urban Ocean Cruises are additional and can be purchased in combination with Aquarium admission or ala cart.

Discover the urban ocean, the ports, and the wildlife that lives alongside them

WHAT:           The Pacific waters off Southern California host a variety of industrial and recreational activities and also provide habitat for a diverse array of animals. In this place of high intensity, massive ships from around the world sail past whales on the way to two of the nation’s busiest ports. Here, windsurfers and sailboats glide by sea lions and offshore oil islands. Embark on a journey aboard a double-decker yacht to visit one of the most distinctive sections of the local coastline and experience the wonders of Southern California’s urban ocean. During this 2 to 2.5 hour voyage you can explore the urban ocean around the shores of Long Beach and San Pedro. Gaining access to sail through local ports, passengers can see wildlife that dwells above and at the ocean’s surface surrounding this complex. Guests can also learn what life is like living in the urban ocean, where wildlife interacts and coexists with human life.

AQUARIUM: The Aquarium of the Pacific, a nonprofit institution, is home to more than 11,000 animals and is dedicated to environmental education. The Aquarium features the Ocean Science Center, the June Keyes Penguin Habitat, and the Wonders of the Deep exhibit. A world of discovery awaits. The Aquarium is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (except Dec. 25 and during the Grand Prix April 17, 18, and 19, 2015).
