MAYSOONA ZAYID THE GIRL WHO CAN CAN by Seema Yasmin
Salaam Reads | on sale 2/10/2026 | Ages 6 – 10 | 9781665953412

From the prolific Pulitzer Prize–nominated Muslim reporter Dr. Seema Yasmin comes an exciting nonfiction chapter book about one of America’s first female Muslim comedians—Maysoon Zayid—the first in the riveting and inspirational Muslim Mavericks. This is the story of the girl who could! Maysoon Zayid was just a girl from New Jersey. She might have sometimes felt like she was in the shadow of her three older sisters, but in her dreams, she was Mimi—an amazing actress, comedian, and dancer! The only problem? People kept telling Maysoon her dreams were impossible! Achieving her goals certainly wasn’t easy; as a Palestinian Muslim girl born with cerebral palsy, Maysoon faced all sorts of challenges—both physical and societal. But Maysoon didn’t dare give up. Instead, she followed her heart all the way to the screen and stage to become one of America’s first ever women Muslim comedians and an actress on her favorite TV show.

This one is inspiring and empowering! I highly recommend it!

About the author: Seema Yasmin is an Emmy Award–winning journalist who was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, medical doctor, professor, and poet. She attended medical school at Cambridge University and worked as a disease detective for the US federal government’s Epidemic Intelligence Service. She currently teaches storytelling at Stanford University School of Medicine, and is a regular contributor to CNN, Self, and Scientific American, among others.

About the illustrator: Noha Habaieb is a Tunisian French visual storyteller, working between Doha and Tunis. After studying comics in Belgium, she returned to Tunisia where she cofounded the Lab619, an award-winning comics collective. Noha took part in the evolution of Lab619’s first comics magazine for adults by participating with her original comics and organizing artistic residencies themed around migration, identity and borders. In 2017, she cofounded Koskh, an illustration studio based in Tunisia, which aims to promote Tunisian heritage through illustrations for children and adults. She’s the illustrator of the Muslim Mavericks chapter book series written by Pulitzer Prize–nominated Dr. Seema Yasmin.

Wetherby, Feb 20 Pet of the Week

AWWWWWW! Let’s find him a forever home!!

Wetherby won’t remove his hat yet because it’s been so weatherly outdoors. Wetherby’s a perfect example of a German shepherd: affectionate, loyal, and a glutton for play and exercise. Approach him with a pull-toy, and get ready for a tug-of-war workout for both of you. Wetherby wears a lot of hats, and the one he’s got on right now is his foster dog one. He’s taking time out from the kennel at the home of a substitute parent and is having the time of his life. He’d love to make it a permanent situation, so if a 4-year-old big buddy would fit into your lifestyle, contact Long Beach Animal Care Services to meet Wetherby! The shelter’s way over capacity with dogs, so speed the process to adopt Wetherby or any of our other pets by emailing PetAdopt@longbeach.gov or petfoster@longbeach.gov. exploring the history of mummification, ancient Egyptian beliefs, new discoveries, and
the application of forensic science in the study of mummies.

Attune 1.0 | LA-wide Sound and Light Public Art Experience

Image: Renderings of Attune 1.0, Courtesy of NXT Art Foundation

Presented by NXT Art Foundation and Arup, and produced by Carmen Zella—Co-founder, NXT Art Foundation + Owner & Creative Director, NOW Art—Attune 1.0 is a first-of-its-kind public art platform designed to connect Angelenos through coordinated sound- and light-based works presented simultaneously across multiple locations. This Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2026, at sunset, Attune unfolds across Los Angeles County, activating multiple sites in a free, family-friendly public art experience.

Event Details

“Attune is the future of public art, a multidisciplinary cultural platform amplifying artists across disciplines and connecting us in a collective experience unlike anything before,” sharesCarmen Zella. “I envision Attune expanding into a series that forever positions Los Angeles County as a trailblazer, a beacon of cultural inspiration when unifying, uplifting, and positive experiences are most needed. Art is a beacon of hope, a reminder that beauty exists in all of us, and that our connection to one another is the most powerful medium of all.”

The event will feature interdisciplinary artists Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Beatie Wolfe, Media Pollution, Sarah Rara, claire rousay, L.Frank, Qur’an Shaheed, Carmina Escobar, and Odeya Nini, each presenting unique sound-based works that invite audiences to slow down, listen deeply, engage, and connect. In addition, light artists Emery C. Martin and Kerstin Larissa Hovland are creating light-based sculptural installations at each site.

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson will create a string orchestra composition and sound healing color percussion that will be accompanied by live soloists at each location. Audience members will be encouraged to sing along, bringing individual voices together in harmony while recognizing their distinct contributions.

Beatie Wolfe’s ‘imPRINTING’ (the LA chapter): A Sonic Self-Portrait transports listeners across the sites inside the artist’s brain, allowing them to tune into and discover its many channels and sonic imprints, including memories, music, conversations, hopes, fears, and dreams.

Sarah Rara will conduct a choir performance inspired by the beauty and joy of the jacaranda season. In exploring the history of these electric violet blooms and how they came to Los Angeles, Rara considers how their iconic color can be imagined as a sound.

claire rousay will adapt ll, a cyclical piano performance that will be manipulated via granular synthesis in Max MSP to craft a slow, ever-changing moment of introspection through a serene loop.

L. Frank will position storytelling as a way to highlight the intersection of Tongva/Ajachmem culture and expression to anchor people to the Indigenous history of each Attune location.

Qur’an Shaheed will present a live, interactive musical performance that incorporates elements of breath and space to help guide audiences into a meditative state inside an evolving soundscape of voice, piano, harp, and woodwinds.

Carmina Escobar will guide a bilingual city-wide breath meditation to form a collective lung across multiple sites where breath becomes our shared offering: each inhale gathers us, each exhale returns us to the city.

Odeya Nini will sing a hymn-like song set to field recordings of sounds taken from Los Angeles’s natural environment, inviting the audience to lend their voices to a shared soundscape that emphasizes connection to the earth and to one another.

Emery C. Martin + Kerstin Larisssa Hovland have designed the centerpiece light sculpture that will be positioned at each event site and the color hue sequences they display, which accompany each artist’s acoustic composition.

Media Pollution will create a television tower that displays rotating live feeds from Attune sites across the County, enabling visitors to connect across distances in real time. This artwork will be placed beside the information table at the event.

“Everyone has a valid and needed voice in this world, regardless of whether one is a trained musician or not, and this piece will make everyone sound sublime and in harmony. No one can silence us…. Everyone’s voice in society is relevant and has its own divine intrinsic beauty and worth, shares Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, whose work for Attune underscores the project’s vision of inclusivity and resonance.

At select locations, Attune will coincide with significant civic and community moments that extend the project’s presence into public life. In Exposition Park, Attune 1.0 at Jesse Brewer Jr. Park will serve as the site’s inaugural public event following a yearlong renovation, with the office of Exposition Park Management hosting a ribbon cutting immediately prior to the activation, marking a moment of public investment and cultural reopening. In Culver City, the Wende Museum’s Glorya Kaufman Community Center will host My Sonic Valentine: Love Wrapped in Sound, a free, immersive sound and wellness experience presented by Sonic Unity from 4:00–7:00 pm, as an acoustic and resonant healing opportunity alongside Attune’s activation. In Long Beach, Attune aligns with the Downtown Long Beach Art + Design Walk, a quarterly event series supported by the Downtown Long Beach Alliance, which brings together artists, designers, architects, makers, and live music to highlight the role of art and design in shaping the city’s creative economy and downtown revitalization. The event, which runs from 2 to 7 PM, includes a Black History Month celebration, Unity, Legacy & Love: A Black Future Celebration, presented by Dreamz into Goals (DIG Life) and Future Fest a one-day block takeover produced by Space Beach Law Lab that brings the wonder of space back to the street. Attendees will be led towards Attune by installation artist Olga Lah’s and Nick Dynice’s work, commissioned by DTLB Design District and Arts Council for Long Beach.

In Partnership with ARUP,  Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, KCRW, Arts Council for Long Beach, City of Santa Monica, NOW Art, Los Angeles County Recreation & Parks, and Los Angeles City Recreation & ParksAttune is guided by a dynamic group of advisors comprising HealthTunes, KCRW, dublab, LOOKOUT.FM, Music Mends Minds, Point C, Theater DNA, Push More Buttons, Music Changing Lives, Contemporary Cultura!.

Attune is presented with the support of our sponsors, who include Mural Colors, Kinetic Lighting, Walmart Foundation, LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath (Third District), LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn (Fourth District), City of LA Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez (Council District 1), City of LA Councilmember Monica Rodriguez (Council District 7), City of LA Councilmember John S. Lee (Council District 12), Port of Long Beach, Downtown Long Beach Alliance, Arts Council for Long Beach, RBHU, Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, and the Dudley T. Dougherty Foundation.

“The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs is proud to partner and support NXT Art Foundation to present Attune. The program unites Los Angeles and the greater region through the healing power of the arts. With 10 countywide activations, the program strongly supports DCA’s mission, ensuring access to the arts for all Angelenos,” says Daniel Tarica, General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

In a moment when civic life is strained by division, isolation, and uncertainty, Attune offers a multi-disciplinary intervention that aims to activate, harmonize, and synchronize across Los Angeles’s diverse neighborhoods. By creating a shared county-wide moment, this project invites Angelenos to shift the focus of love to local communities on Valentine’s Day, reduce stress, and experience unity through art.

Paisley, Fri. 13 Pet of the Week

Paisley is a good, good girl! She recently took a Fido Field Trip with shelter volunteer Patti, and she was a model passenger once Patti helped her get her rear end into the car. But Paisley’s no lazybones (hey, did someone say “Bones”?)—the field trip included a trip to the Zoom Room where she played like a puppy, and she sure loved the double-double Puppy Patty that Patti (no pun intended, and no bun with the patty) got for her. Paisley loves her walks and has been taking off a few pounds to remain fit. She’d love to run after a squirrel, too, so her human must be mindful! Paisley is 3 years old and has been at the shelter for about 10 months, and today is Friday the 13th. How about throwing some good luck her way? Speed the process to adopt or foster Paisley or any of our other pets by emailing PetAdopt@longbeach.gov or petfoster@longbeach.gov. You can also call (562) 570-4925. Our shelter hours are Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 7700 E. Spring St. at the entrance to El Dorado Park (no parking fee for shelter visitors). Ask for ID#A739902.

“Dreams Gather Here” Opens at ReflectSpace, Feb. 17

ReflectSpace at Glendale Central Library is pleased to present Dreams Gather Here, a solo exhibition by Rachel Hakimian Emenaker, on view from February 17 through April 26, 2026. The exhibition explores how the cultural memory of diasporic communities is preserved in the history of material objects. Moving across geographies that include Armenia, Lebanon, Russia, South America, and the United States, Emenaker’s work reflects on how people, objects, and gestures carry memory through time, forming the foundations of new futures and new cities.

With an American father and a Syrian Armenian mother, Emenaker’s childhood was spent in Suriname (South America) and Russia. She grew up multilingual and multicultural, immersed in Dutch, Russian, Armenian, American, and Surinamese cultures. Emenaker moved to the United States as an adult to start her university education in art.

Employing batik (wax and dye), sculpture, tile, and other media, Emenaker’s work is a meditation on diasporic architecture. Fragments, inherited gestures, and long-traveled materials converge in sculptural and installation-based works that speak directly to communities like Los Angeles, Moscow, Kessab, and Van—cities that witness, absorb, and hold countless migratory stories and dreams.

“For communities shaped by migration, grief, and rupture, dreaming can be a way of re-remembering and reimagining,” says Emenaker. “Dreams often become portable homes, a place to rest when permanence is impossible.”

Dreams Gather Here allows us that precious moment to pause and reflect on what dreams and home may mean to us.

An opening reception with the artist will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM at ReflectSpace, located inside Central Library 222 East Harvard Street Glendale, CA 91205. For more information, visit ReflectSpace.org.
