Dobby is Pet of the Week: November 19, 2025

AWWWWWWWW!

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we’d like to suggest that instead of going to your grandparents’ house for dinner, you invite Grandma or Grandpa (or both, if possible) to your house for dinner and a forever stay! Dobby,a 7-year-old American bulldog/boxer mix, sure needs something to be thankful for. He and another dog were taken in by animal control officers after their loving human was hospitalized following an accident in the home. The human’s family members were able to take only one dog, so Dobby was left shaking in his kennel and wondering why he wasn’t curled up in his own bed. He sure pulled the short end of the wishbone. Dobby would make a great house elf in a quiet household and would get along fine as a solo soul or an addition to an accepting pack. Can you give Dobby or any of the shelter seniors a reason to be thankful? If so, speed the process to adopt Dobby or any of our other pets by emailing PetAdopt@longbeach.gov or petfoster@longbeach.gov. You can also call (562) 570-4925. Our shelter hours are Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 7700 E. Spring St. at the entrance to El Dorado Park (no parking fee for shelter visitors. Ask for ID#A752160.

Looking for a Great Rainy Day Activity? Check out ColorFig!

This looks just like my pup, Ozzy!

Looking for a fun rainy day activity! How about painting? How about ready-to-paint Figments: 3D-printed characters with bold shapes, comfy to hold, and easy to color?

I recently received a Figment of my pup from ColorFig. I was amazed that it looked just like my pup! I had emailed a photo and quickly received a fun kit which included paint and paint brushes!

ColorFig is a new family-run studio turning imagination into 3D reality and adding a splash of color.

Founded and operated by their STEM-driven daughter and her brother, they design and 3D-print paint-ready figurines called Figments — creative kits that invite people to Print. Paint. Play.

Every ColorFig kit is made locally in Houston, using eco-friendly practices like using recycled and upcycled packaging (we even shred old boxes into our fill!)

Each Figment celebrates creativity, culture, and connection — from playful kid-friendly designs to artistic cultural icons.

The most amazing part of the whole process is you can customize and personalize these with your child’s name which makes an amazing stocking stuffer!

I had fun over this rainy day weekend painting Ozzy!

Ozzy’s Ultimate Pet Nutrition Review

Ozzy loves these! They are his new favorite treat!

If you are searching for treats for your pup…Ultimate Pet Nutrition has you covered! I recently received a variety of treats for my pup, Ozzy to try out. His favorite is the Nutra Bites-Chicken Liver Dog Treats! It really is difficult to just give him one because he will continue to stare at me or the bag until he gets another.

I like that they are freeze-dried and have zero filters or artificial preservatives. The only ingredient is chicken liver, and there are no artificial colors or additives.

Ozzy’s new favorite!

There are many other treats you can choose from such as: Bison Liver Dog Treats and Wild Salmon Dog Treats! Ozzy actually loves those too! I like that they are single ingredient treats and great for daily treats or meal toppers.

Can I have one please?

Ultimate Pet Nutrition takes out the guessing game and delivers vet-developed formulas to help dogs (and cats!) live their best lives. The company makes food, supplements, and treats. You really should check them out! The treats would also make a great stocking stuffer! I know Ozzy would like some in his stocking this year!

Yummy!

Twyla, Nov. 14 Pet of the Week

AWWWWWW!

A senior cat relinquished to a shelter is heartbreaking to think about. Twyla, 10 years old, is one of these cats. Like other senior pets, she’s lived most of her life in a (hopefully) safe, loving home, and now, she’s suddenly in a kennel in a strange setting wondering where the lap went. Twyla is a friendly brown tabby with a white triangle that flows up from her muzzle to between her lovely green eyes. She’s affectionate and would be a calm addition to a home. Additionally, adopting or fostering Twyla would make room for the cats who came in from a hoarding situation of 74 of them. To adopt or foster Twyla, email PetAdopt@longbeach.gov to speed the process, or call (562) 570-7387. Ask for ID#A749556. Better yet, come meet her and all the other cats in person at Long Beach Animal Care Services, 7700 E. Spring St., Long Beach. Visitors are welcome Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Books of the Week: November 10th, 2025

The True Gifts of Christmas as an advent calendar

This holiday season, instead of another chocolate advent calendar that’s gone by December 25th, Emmy-nominated TV host and Hallmark Channel star Megan Alexander is offering families a keepsake tradition to enjoy year after year.

Her new book, The True Gifts of Christmas (Loyola Press; August 11, 2025), is designed like an advent calendar in book form, with 25 “gifts” that count down to Christmas. Each day reveals the story and meaning behind a beloved holiday tradition like candy canes, mistletoe, and stockings alongside festive recipes, hands-on crafts, and family activities.

With its beautiful photography and heartfelt storytelling, The True Gifts of Christmas transforms the countdown to December 25th into a meaningful journey of reflection, connection, and celebration. It’s a substitute for the traditional advent calendar that won’t disappear when the season ends, it’s a keepsake families can return to year after year.

I love this book and even learned a few things such as what the meaning of candles at Christmas and what cardinals are associated with Christmas. I also love that there are recipes, and I can’t wait to try the Gingerbread cookie recipe.

Christmas Advent books seem to be the hot thing this holiday season! Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers has acquired THE CHRISTMAS CONTEST, an illustrated chapter book featuring Santa’s elves that uses a patented book design allowing readers to unlock one chapter per day in the lead-up to Christmas with an innovative perforated chapter design.

Santa Claus has a problem. There are too many kids on the nice list this year, and he’s worried he won’t be able to deliver all the presents by himself! The only solution is to recruit an apprentice for the first time in his long career—to be chosen through a carefully crafted competition.

Soon, the North Pole is buzzing with excitement as contestants come forward to show they’ve got the Christmas spirit and know-how to help jolly old St. Nicholas himself. As Christmas Eve draws closer and Santa Claus tasks the hopefuls with more and more creative tests, who will come out on top?

Young children will love this book! It’s a must-buy this holiday season!

The Story Orchestra: Hansel and Gretel

Discover the enchanting magic of Hansel and Gretel in this musical reimagining of Humperdinck’s most famous suites – press the buttons on each of the 10 pages to hear the vivid sound of an orchestra playing from Humperdinck’s score. At the back of the book, find a short biography of the composer, Engelbert Humperdinck, with details about his composition of Hansel and Gretel. You can replay the musical excerpts and, for each of them, read a discussion of the instruments, rhythms, and musical techniques that make them so powerful. A glossary defines musical terms. Ages 5 to 8.
