Named “one of the must-see orchid shows in the world” by the Los Angeles Times and featured alongside the U.K.’s prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, the Santa Barbara Orchid Show unites a thriving, international community of growers and enthusiasts cultivating an environment of wonder and delight in celebration of the world’s most exotic flower.  View cutting-edge hybrids amongst the thousands of varieties featured in garden-sized exhibits, plus practical repotting demonstrations, magical orchid artwork, and stunning sales plants from an international array of vendors.

Experience the untold beauty and fascinating complexity of an ancient organism, which finds its ideal home here in the temperate climate of the Southern California coast. Walk among these captivating plants – each a living work of art that contributes to a multi-million dollar industry, garnering Santa Barbara’s worldwide acclaim among horticulturists and field experts. Learn about orchid caretaking through grower demonstrations and feel inspired by gorgeous works of art that celebrate their beguiling depth and color. Watch as vendors and exhibitors from around the world vie for the title of “Grand Champion Cymbidium” and other distinctive honors reserved for the show’s most outstanding flowers.   

These groups will converge at Santa Barbara’s Earl Warren Showgrounds to create a fleeting fantasy of beauty and diversity that is true “Orchid Magic”.  Single-day tickets are $14 for General admission; $12 for Seniors (age 65 and above), Students with ID, and Advance group sales (minimum 25); and free for children 12 and under with a paid adult.   Three-day passes are just $22 for General and $18 for Seniors and Students.  Group tickets must be purchased in advance on the website   

Individual tickets can be bought on the website or at the Earl Warren ticket office the day of the show. The website also has lists of 2018 exhibitors, vendors, trophy winners, and tour bus operators, plus links to Santa Barbara tourist information.  Earl Warren Showgrounds is at Highway 101 and Las Positas (street address 3400 Calle Real, Santa Barbara, CA 93105).

NHM Celebrates Urban Nature at L.A. Nature Fest

Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17, 2019
On March 16 and 17, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) celebrates Los Angeles’ wildlife during its fifth annual L.A. Nature Fest. The event will unfold in NHM’s very own Nature Gardens, the outdoor space where Museum scientists do real research and educators tell nature’s coolest stories. All wildlife lovers, from hiking machines to nature newbies, will be blown away by L.A.’s wild side: the plants, the animals, and the people devoted to protecting and studying them. 

Visitors can participate in hands-on workshops and experience local nature first hand with a range of activities for all ages.

St. Patrick’s Day at The Original Farmers Market

Channel your inner Irish this St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17th, at The Original Farmers Market. This family-friendly celebration includes Irish-themed fun with Market classics like Magee’s Kitchen’s famous corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes; green beers and Guinness from EB’s Beer & Wine as well as themed ice cream flavors from Local Ice. From 11:30 am until 5:00 pm, dance along to live strolling bagpipe music, Irish duo Celtic Camerata, and, if you are lucky, you can catch a photo with a strolling leprechaun! When the sun goes down, enjoy a live performance from Irish-American rock band Lilt’N’Tang. Come enjoy singing, dancing and a whole lot of good cheer at Third & Fairfax – and don’t forget to wear something green! Magee’s Kitchen, one of the Market’s oldest merchants, has been serving its famous corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes since 1917. Grab a plate of this perennial favorite and chow down on traditional Irish fare! Trinket, March 14th Pet of the Week

Update: Trinket was adopted! 🙂

You can just hear the circus music playing as Trinket performs her antics! She’ll run around and around like a trained pony inviting you to give chase, and once you do, she’s on her back begging for tummy rubs. Then, she’s up and running in circles again!
