DID YOU KNOW? Hair Loss Awareness Month

DID YOU KNOW?

·       According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss, and by the age of 50, approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair.

·       But it’s not just men who struggle with hair loss – women make up 40% of hair-loss sufferers in America!

SO WHAT CAUSES HAIR LOSS?

·       Stress is a common cause in both men and women and is often responsible for conditions including telogen effluvium, which pushes hair follicles into a resting phase, causing hair to thin and fall out.

·       Crash dieting is another culprit – nutritional deficiencies and a drastic reduction in calorie intake can lead to scalp damage, irritation, and thinning hair.

·       Traction alopecia, a condition that causes damage to the hair follicles due to tight hairstyles which pull at the hair over time, is yet another common cause for hair loss in women. So is the frequent use of heat tools such as flat irons and blow dryers.

·       Aging, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances are also key reasons for hair loss, as are environmental toxins and free radicals. All of these common triggers throw the hair follicle out of balance, causing hair to thin, shed, and struggle to grow back.

WHAT’S THE FIX?

·       Lessen Your Stress. Easier said than done, we know, but it’s been proven that high stress levels can lead to hair loss. Whether you try yoga, meditation, or just taking 10 minutes out of your day to practice somesimple breathing exercises, doing something for YOU on regular basis to reduce your stress levels can make a marked difference in the health of your hair.

·       Eat Right. There are so many important reasons to eat a balanced diet, and now you can add thick, healthy hair to the list. Ditch the junk food and fill your diet with protein-rich foods like poultry and eggs (protein is an essential building block for hair), vitamin B-packed whole grains (which are also filled with hair-enhancing zinc and iron), and dark greens such as spinach and broccoli (which are packed with vitamins A and C, both of which contribute to healthy sebum production in the hair follicle).

·       Style Your Hair With Care. Most all of us use heat tools, but cutting back on the frequency can be key when you’re dealing with thinning hair and hair loss. Air-drying whenever possible and decreasing the number of times per week that you blow dry can help limit damage, as can keeping the tools on low or medium heat settings when you style. And if you like to wear tight braids, cornrows, or ponytails, you might want to consider revamping your look – these styles pull on the hair, causing tension in the scalp that can lead to permanent hair loss.
