The Richstone Family Center Hosts its 26th Annual Pier-to-Pier Walkathon to Support Child Abuse Prevention Month

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – In honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, The Richstone Family Center will host their 26th annual Pier-to-Pier Walkathon on Saturday, April 27th at the Manhattan Beach Pier beginning at 8:00am. This year’s walk will be led by event chairs Jim and Shannon Mora. Jim is the dynamic head football coach for the UCLA Bruins and his wife Shannon is Vice-President of the family’s Count on Me Family Foundation, whose mission is to assist at-risk and in need children across the country.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this great community event that promotes awareness of child abuse prevention,” said Shannon Mora. “Through our family foundation we’ve worked to better the lives of children in need and empower them to reach their dreams.  Richstone shares in this passion and are creating a safe haven for vulnerable children where they can heal and achieve brighter futures.”

The Walkathon, stretching from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier, will feature various stops on The Strand at homes of families who support the cause.  Event contributor, Manhattan Beach Creamery, has teamed up with one of those families to serve complimentary ice cream sandwiches to Walkathon participants. The walk concludes on Manhattan Beach Boulevard with a post-walk party featuring local vendors such as My Fit Foods, Sweet Lucie’s Ice Cream and Treats Truck, Zico Coconut Water, Grow –The Produce Shop, The Cube Photobooth as well as activities conducted by the United States Army, and the Manhattan Beach Fire Department. All funds raised from the Walkathon support the Richstone Family Center’s child abuse treatment and prevention programs serving the greater South Bay region.

The Richstone Pier-to-Pier Walkathon began in the 1980’s as a small grassroots effort to highlight National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Earlier this month, Richstone launched the “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign to further promote awareness of the issue of child abuse and the need for funds to support critical programs like those offered at Richstone. Originally introduced by Prevent Child Abuse America, the campaign focuses on the pinwheel as the national symbol for child abuse prevention.  As the new symbol for this cause, the pinwheel stands as an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve. To see photos of the campaign, visit www.RichstoneFamily.org.

Registration for the family friendly Walkathon is now open and walkers are encouraged to pre-register online to walk, jog, or even stand-up paddle board!  Last year, with the support of 1,200 participants and teams representing

businesses, organizations and local schools, the Walkathon raised more than $150,000.  Approximately 90% percent of the monies raised at the event are used to directly support Richstone’s programs, which include counseling, after-school programs, violence prevention programs, transitional housing for young women emancipated from foster care, anger management and parenting skills classes.

“A case of child abuse is reported every 10 seconds.  In 2011-2012, Richstone provided critical services to more than 9,500 children and families in need,“ said Richstone’s Interim Executive Director, Roger Van Remmen. “The need is great and the solutions are few as Richstone remains the only comprehensive center dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse in our surrounding communities.”

The Richstone Pier-to-Pier Walk is made possible through the help of generous sponsors such as Coppersmith Global Logistics, Dewitt Petroleum, Skechers Foundation, King Harbor Marina, Charles E. Thomas, and NW Real Estate Brokers.

News-O-Matic

Looking for a safe and fun way to share the News with your child ages 7-10? I know that I personally don’t like my son to watch news on TV. So, I am excited to learn about an app that is geared towards children ages 7-10. It is available for the iPad or iPad Mini in the Apple App Store and you can try it for free and then pay for a subscription at a reasonable price of  weekly subscription: $1.99 + 1 week free (10 issues), monthly subscription$6.99 a month (22 issues) or $49.99  for a yearly subscription (260 issues). Press4Kids (P4K) launched in MARCH and News-O-Matic is an educational news app that covers breaking news, sports, science and much more in an accessible and kid-friendly way!

News-O-Matic is a week day newspaper application which includes five daily news stories, detailed images, videos, illustrations, maps, timelines and games. P4K’s objective is to inspire a generation of children to become habitual news readers and well-informed global citizens. What I really like is that this app also gives children a voice to express their views. Children can actually interact with the Editor-in-Chief by rating stories, drawing pictures, asking questions or expressing opinions about current topics in the “News Room” section of the app. I would have loved this as a child and it’s great to watch my 9-year-old son enjoying an app that is educational, safe & cool all at the same time! I really find it impressive that it teaches children about the top news stories in a safe educational way. News on TV can simply be too scary.

Created by a skilled team—including child experts, designers and entrepreneurs—News-O-Matic aims to transform the news experience for children in a safe, interactive environment while encouraging them to become knowledgeable, productive members of society.

Helpful Tips for Parents to address News Issues with their children

Making sense of the tragedy at the Boston Marathon yesterday can be quite a challenge for adults, let alone children.

Children process these things differently.  They may be asking difficult questions and parents may need suggestions to help discuss what happened and address their concerns.

Fred Rogers from the long-running TV show, Mr. Rogers was quoted as saying, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” That is good advice from the wise Mrs. Rogers, but what if your children have questions and need more?

Below are some helpful tips from Child Psychologist Dr. Phyllis Ohrfor Press4Kids’s News-O-Matic, the first educational, news app for children 7 to 10 years old. Dr. Ohr is also the Director of the Child and Parent Psychological Services Clinic at Hofstra and the Assistant Director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program.

Here are some tips from Dr. Ohr for how parents can address news issues with children and what children can do to feel better:

1.       When the event does not personally affect the child, reassure them that everything is okay with the people they love and that nothing has changed for them.

2.    Be sure to stress to children that if they do have questions to ask parents, teachers as well as friends. Other children having the same feelings may be comforting.

3.    Begin by giving the child a brief synopsis of what happened by using age appropriate language. Ask if there is something they want to know more about or if they need something explained further. If so, stick to pointedly answering their question or clarifying. Do not add on or digress.

4.    Do not assume the news will make children feel a certain way. Ask if they know how they feel, but stress that kids feel all different ways when they hear important news and sometimes do not know how they feel or do not feel anything which is okay. However, if children are affected by it, it is their own feeling. Reassure children that no matter what they are feeling, their feelings are okay.

5.    If they are upset but don’t want to talk, suggest a fun activity for distraction or help them use calming skills like playing, drawing a picture or writing a story. These activities help release any upset feelings and make children feel better.

’42’ Inspiational, Educational and Humorous Story of An American Legend

42

Out in theaters on April 12 is the inspirational story of an American Legend, Jackie Robinson. This long-awaited story shows how the history-making signing of a black man with the Brooklyn Dodgers changed not only baseball but all sports – forever. It has received rave reviews from our KIDS FIRST! Film Critics who were lucky enough to have seen advance screenings. KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Raven Devanney, age 15, says this film was more than just educational, but also “has a sense of humor, wit and a whole lot of inspiration.” She cautions that the PG-13 rating is due to “racial slurs and slanderous language that may be hard for [some] children to understand.”

Confidence Building App Inspires Girls to Leap Beyond the Moon to Reach Their Dreams

Luna-Book-276x300

(April 2, 2013 – San Francisco, CA)  James Brown claims “It’s A Man’s World” but, historically, women have contributed to some of the greatest innovations in science, art, business, environments and cultures.  Research shows in the early school years, girls are social butterflies and rank top of the class, but by middle school peer approval and physical appearances take priority over self-worth, skills, and assertiveness.

One mom is determined to inspire a new generation of conscientious, emotionally fit and assertive girls with the launch of Go Luna Girl Go a confidence and kindness building app for kids three to eight and available on iTunes for $1.99.  The app, compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, is the first in a series of influential stories with activities from the Beyond the Moon with Luna book series.
Go Luna Girl Go is an interactive story with bonus coloring activities celebrating women in various careers. Girls adventure with Luna as she prepares for her first flight. Just a young cow on the farm ready to clickity-clack down a pre-determined life, Luna meets girls leaping for their dreams; discovering they can make a difference in the world.  With the support of a wise ol’ frog named Chester, Luna finds her confidence, shares her curiosities, and takes a chance that her fears will be drowned out by cheers from the other girls in the field.  Luna ponders the social risks and considers many paths before acknowledging she is capable, and worthy, of leaping beyond expectation to realize her dream.
Go Luna Girl Go is created by Stephanie Rach-Wilson, a mother of two daughters growing up in a world more embracing today of women in roles previously filled by men.  “The paradigm is shifting as it pertains to opportunities but women need to champion each other so we enter into leadership roles more confident of ourselves and considerate of other women,” says Ms. Rach-Wilson.
Each download includes a free physical copy of the book, to encourage girls to read and role play with parents and friends.  Details available with app download.
A portion of proceeds supports the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States (www.turnersyndrome.org). TS is a broad-spectrum chromosomal abnormality affecting one in 2,000 females physically, mentally and emotionally.  One of Ms.Rach-Wilson’s daughters was diagnosed at age eight with little hope for a viable life yet she leaps beyond expectations everyday.
Download the Go Luna Girl Go app on iTunes and visit www.golunagirlgo.comto learn about great women in history, modern girls and women making a difference, resources for social and emotional development, and activities to build confidence and kindness in kids.
Go Luna Girl Go is produced by Bay Area based It’s All Good Media, Inc(IAGmedia). The Company also produces the award-winning, eco-educational series, Let’s Go Chipper, promoting 21st Century learning and social-emotional preparedness.
