December 3, 17 Explore the Bay Family Hike

An easy hike for families of all ages to learn more about Upper Newport Bay and enjoy its trails. Hike will be on paved and dirt trails.

The County of Orange, OC Parks and Dana Point Harbor invite families to deck the halls “Under the Sea” at the 42nd Annual Boat Parade of Lights.

December 9 – Hoot’s There? Night Hike

5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Come see Santiago Oaks Regional Park in a completely different setting – in the dark! Park rangers will lead a moonless night hike where you can listen for the sounds of the night and discover who visits the park after the sun has set. Activities include a visit to the Nature Center, a short video presentation and a hike through the wilderness area.

December 10 – Geology Hike

Step back 25 million years in Orange County’s history to a time when the seas receded and the San Andreas Fault was just starting to form. With a Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist, discover the geologic processes going on today and how they affect the natural landscape. This moderate 3-mile hike is over uneven, steep and sometimes rocky terrain with a 300-ft elevation gain.

December 10, 11 – 31st Annual Candlelight Walk

5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Experience the historic park in a unique, once-a-year opportunity during Heritage Hill’s Candlelight Tours. More than 1,000 luminaria will light the park’s pathways as strolling carolers and musicians fill the air with music. Children can visit with Santa in the arbor and sit at a school desk while storytellers spin holiday tales in the one-room El Toro Grammar school. Visitors will enjoy music as they tour the 1930s Bennett Ranch House and can watch a Spanish guitarist and Flamenco dancer in the 1863 Serrano Adobe. There will also be ongoing entertainment in the 1891 St. George’s Episcopal Mission.  Hot chocolate, apple cider and homemade cookies will be available for purchase.

December 10 – Ho Ho Ho Night Hike

Come see Carbon Canyon Regional Park in a completely different setting – in the dark! Our annual fall/winter night hikes are here again. Park Rangers will lead a hike to the Redwood Grove showcasing the natural wonders that can only be seen at night. The Ho-Ho-Ho Night Hike will feature many fun activities, including a visit to the Nature Center, hot cocoa and cookies, a live animal presentation by the Nature of Wildworks, and a hike through the wilderness area.

December 13 – Birds of Mason Regional Park

9 – 11 a.m.

Are you able to spot the ducks, geese and grebes in the lakes? Can you hear and see the songbirds on the trees and in the bushes? There may also be shorebirds and hawks at the park! Come join an OC Parks volunteer and experienced birdwatcher and learn about the birds of William R. Mason Regional Park. While on an easy, half-mile walk around the park, you will be able to see and learn about a variety of birds that visit the park. Bring your binoculars to get better views of the birds.

Learn about local owls using the five senses. Through sight, smell, sound, touch and taste discover their unique features for survival. Join Park Ranger Jenn for a family friendly talk and owl pellet dissection. (Young children will be asked to partner with their family for activity.)

December 18 – Nursery Plant Propagation and Care Day  

8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Join us at our native plant nursery as we care for native plants from their seed stage to their mature, ready-to-be planted stage. Volunteers may collect seeds, sow seeds in flats, bump plants up, plant at restoration sites, sterilize plant containers, and/or help maintain the facilities for the plants. Gain hands-on experience with habitat restoration while working alongside other zany and interesting plant lovers!

December 19 – Tecate Cypress Stewardship

Help water and weed around young Tecate cypress trees, a rare species found only in Southern California and northern Baja California. These trees have been planted in Fremont Canyon Nature Preserve, in close proximity to the Staging Area, and no hiking is required. Pre-registration is required.

December 20 – Dripping Springs Trail Restoration

9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Help convert an old ranch road into a single-track trail by planting native seedlings trailside, removing invasive weeds, and watering newly planted seedlings in Limestone Canyon Nature Preserve. Afterward, enjoy a visit to Dripping Springs, a natural water source dripping down a fern-covered rock. Pre-registration is required.

Relax in nature this spring with park staff and Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers.  Enjoy a short walking meditation (1/2 mile), breathing and energization exercises, and sitting meditation. Bring a blanket, pillow, and clothing in layers in case the evening is cool.  No experience necessary.
