Laguna Art Museum has announced the highly anticipated exhibition, On the Edge: Los Angeles Art from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection on view from March 23 through September 2, 2024.

This exhibition, previously showcased at the Bakersfield Museum of Art in 2021, now takes center stage at Laguna Art Museum, offering a unique and enhanced experience. The Laguna Art Museum exhibition will present earlier works from the 1960s, bringing a historical perspective to the evolution of Los Angeles art, including works from artists Daniel LaRue Johnson, Dora De Larios, Charles Garabedian, Vija Celmins, Tony Berlant and others.

The exhibition introduces additional artists, including John McCracken and Bruce Conner, enriching the narrative of this pivotal period in art history. Distinctive pieces from Billy Al Bengston and James Hayward were also added to the exhibition to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of Los Angeles’ artistic evolution. Notably, On the Edge at Laguna Art Museum unveils never-before-exhibited works from Lita Albuquerque, Ken Price, Lynda Benglis and Ed Ruscha, providing visitors with an exclusive glimpse into the artistic journey of these influential figures.

“Our anticipation for the opening of On the Edge: Los Angeles Art from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection grows stronger each day as we prepare for a truly epic and extraordinary gathering of artworks and artists here on the Southern California coast, a place that has informed so much of the artwork in the exhibition,” said Julie Perlin Lee, Executive Director, Laguna Art Museum. “We are grateful to the Quinn family for being open to the incorporation of artists like, Jose PRIME Reza and Joey Terrill, alongside others not featured in previous iterations of the exhibition and for allowing us to display artworks by Frank Gehry, Andy Warhol and Laddie John Dill, among others that have never been exhibited publicly. By incorporating artists and artworks that align with the museum’s permanent art collection and carefully selecting works from the earlier decade of the 1960s and work created less than a year ago, we have created a fresh experience for visitors.”

Joan Agajanian met Jack Quinn at the University of Southern California where she was studying to be a teacher, and he was a law student. They were a happily married couple for 56 years until Jack’s passing in 2017. Together, they raised identical twin daughters Amanda and Jennifer. Collectively, the family has amassed artworks by Los Angeles’ most prominent artists that document the development of contemporary art in Los Angeles, and uniquely, the family itself. In the early ‘50s, a 17 year old Joan met the brash young Billy Al Bengston while both were working at Desmond’s department store on Crenshaw Blvd. Bengston was Joan’s initial connection to Ed Kienholz, Ed Moses, Ken Price and others. Those artists were a close-knit group affiliated with the Ferus Gallery and they were making an impact in Los Angeles. The Quinns’ home became a meeting place for their diverse group of friends ranging from the arts, the social set and the legal community. Joan, who notoriously had a camera in tow, documented these gatherings where friendships were deeply established, and patronage of the arts was encouraged.

In 1978, Andy Warhol asked Joan to join his Interview magazine as its West Coast editor. She soon also became the LA Herald Examiner society editor known as “Culture Cween” and wrote for national and international publications. That path along with her appointment to the California Arts Council allowed Joan to promote the work of the growing circle of Southern California creatives while Jack actively championed their circle of artists by connecting them with the legal community. He was the first to transform the walls of his three-story law firm into a captivating art space, akin to a museum. Artist Joe Goode once said the Quinns were a “primary support system for artists in L.A. at a time when you could count the city’s art dealers on one hand.”

Joan, called one of the most painted, sketched and sculpted women alive by W Magazine, has been a subject for artists such as David Hockney, Shepard Fairey, Claire Falkenstein, Steven Arnold, George Hurrell, Yolanda Gonzalez, Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Robert Graham, Matthew Rolston to name a few. The exhibition includes over 25 portraits of Joan and the Quinn family, a poignant representation of friendship, appreciation and respect.

Generously sponsored by Bank of America, Christie’s and JHM Foundation, On the Edge promises an enriching and immersive encounter with the diverse expressions of Southern California art. The exhibition not only showcases the Quinn family’s pivotal role in shaping the Los Angeles art scene but also emphasizes the dynamic evolution of artistic styles over the decades.

Practical Tips for Financial Recovery After a Personal Injury

Suffering a personal injury can be a traumatic experience, impacting not only physical health but also financial stability. The aftermath of such an event often involves significant medical expenses, loss of income, and unforeseen costs, which can leave you grappling with financial hardship. Thankfully, you may be entitled to monetary compensation as a personal injury victim.

The funds are meant to cover the expenses you were forced to incur due to someone else’s negligence. Note that this amount is hardly ever fixed. But if you take the necessary proactive steps, you can maximize your claim and begin your path to financial recovery. Below, we look at steps to take to help you regain your financial footing after a personal injury in Austin, TX.

1. Assess the Financial Impact

The first step in the financial recovery process is to assess the full extent of the financial impact of the personal injury. How much money did the incident cost you, presently and in the long term? You can assess this by gathering all relevant financial documents, including medical bills, insurance policies, and income statements. When you understand the total cost of medical treatment, lost wages, and other expenses, you can develop a clear picture of their financial situation and identify areas where they may need assistance.

2. Understand Insurance Coverage

Do you have insurance coverage for the said incident, or are you relying on your insurer’s coverage? There are several types of insurance, such as health insurance, auto insurance (if the injury occurred in a car accident), disability, or homeowners’ insurance, that may be called upon to cover your cost of recovery. You have to carefully review your insurance policies to determine what is covered and what is not, including deductibles, copayments, and coverage limits. Additionally, it’s usually helpful to consult with a legal or insurance expert to ensure a full understanding of coverage options.

3. Explore Legal Options

While insurance may cover some damages, note that Texas is an at-fault state, so the negligent party is usually responsible for paying compensation. This requires that you file a personal injury claim against them, be they a negligent driver, medical professional, manufacturer, or store owner on whose slippery premises you slipped and fell. So, if your personal injury occurred in Austin, Texas, call on a reputable lawyer such as Herrman & Herrman’s Austin personal injury lawyer, who can help file your claim and represent you in court. Having a seasoned lawyer increases your chances of obtaining the maximum compensation you deserve.

4. Budgeting and Financial Planning

Developing a budget and financial plan is key to managing expenses and rebuilding financial stability after a personal injury. You should prioritize essential expenses such as housing, utilities, and medical care while cutting back on discretionary spending. If you would be undergoing therapy, have a budget for that as well. Creating a budget can help individuals track their income and expenses, identify areas where they can save money, and ensure they are living within their means during the recovery period.

5. Seek Financial Assistance

In any case, if you are unable to cover other expenses not covered by your personal injury settlement, it may be necessary to seek further financial assistance. This could include applying for government benefits such as disability or unemployment benefits, seeking assistance from charitable organizations, or exploring crowdfunding options. Additionally, some hospitals and medical providers offer financial assistance programs for patients in need. You have the right to leverage all options at your disposal.

6. Negotiate Medical Bills

Medical bills can quickly accumulate after a personal injury, but individuals may be able to negotiate with medical providers to lower their expenses. This could involve negotiating payment plans, requesting discounts for cash or upfront payments, or disputing charges for services that were not received or improperly billed. Many medical providers are willing to work with patients to find a mutually agreeable solution for managing medical debt.

7. Consider Long-Term Financial Planning

In addition to addressing immediate financial needs, individuals should also consider their long-term financial security in the wake of a personal injury. This may involve updating estate planning documents such as wills and powers of attorney, reviewing and adjusting retirement savings goals, and exploring options for disability insurance or other forms of income protection. Planning for the future can provide peace of mind and ensure financial stability in the years to come.

Conclusion

With the proactive steps outlined above and considering long-term financial planning, you can regain your financial footing and move forward with confidence after a personal injury. While the road to recovery may be challenging, with determination, perseverance, and the right support systems in place, individuals can overcome these obstacles and achieve financial stability once again.

FAQs From Parents About Navigating A Child’s Autism Diagnosis

When you have a child who has just been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, it can be an overwhelming time. You will likely have many questions that you want to have answered about how to help your child now, how you can manage as parents, and what the future may hold.

You aren’t alone, there! If you have any questions about your child having an autism diagnosis, then read on, as here, the most common queries parents have will be answered.

Will This Diagnosis Impact Their Future?

This is a difficult question to answer; every case of ASD is unique, and some children may only have some signs of having it, whereas others may be on the more extreme end. There is information on autism360.com that can help parents navigate both the mild and extreme cases, but, in general, if your child has fewer needs, then it is unlikely to have a severe impact on their future. That does not mean you can bypass getting them support, though, as even mild cases of ASD, left untreated, can have long-term repercussions.

If your child has more extreme requirements, then they will need more support in the future, but as ASD is now more understood, it is easier for parents to manage this condition.

How Can I Support Them?

To start, you can learn as much about ASD as you can. This will help you to better understand your child and their behaviors.

If your child is vocal and of an age where they can understand what is being said to them, then talk to them about the diagnosis. This will help you to explore your concerns and worries without judgment. You can also download apps and other tools that will help your child cope with social interactions, thereby reducing their anxiety levels.

Are There Therapies That Can Help?

At the time of writing, there is no one therapy that can help a child who has autism spectrum disorder.

There are therapies that can help children to manage the symptoms, though. There is Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) therapy, which can help children with behavioral concerns, as well as physical therapy, which can assist a child with ASD who may have problems with motor skills. If your child has a verbal delay, then you should consider looking into speech therapy. As before, each case of ASD is unique, and your child will need a targeted treatment plan to help them manage.

Will My Child Need Medication?

Again, there is no set medication that can help with ASD.

However, there are children who have related complications, such as anxiety, aggression, and hyperactivity. In these cases, medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (anti-anxieties) or Ritalin may be helpful, but you should always discuss any medication with your child’s doctor.

Does My Child Need To Go To A Specialist School?

Not necessarily. Children who have less extreme symptoms of ASD can do perfectly well in regular schools and may only need some assistance from a learning support assistant.

If your child is non-verbal or has more complex needs, then it is worth looking into a more specialized school that can offer your child the help and support that they need to learn.

Whale Watching with Kids: Tips for Making the Experience Educational and Fun

Whale watching offers a captivating glimpse into the mesmerizing world of marine life, providing kids with a front-row seat to the majestic beauty of these gentle giants.

Beyond the sheer awe of witnessing whales in their natural habitat, this experience presents invaluable educational opportunities for children.

By immersing themselves in the wonders of the ocean, kids can deepen their understanding of marine life and conservation efforts. Here are some essential tips to ensure that whale watching is not just entertaining but also enriching for young adventurers.

1.  Choose the Right Tour

When choosing a whale watching tour, it’s essential to select one that caters to families and offers educational resources tailored for kids.

Opt for tours like Whale Watching Long Beach that prioritize family-friendly experiences and provide knowledgeable guides.

These guides engage children with fascinating facts about whales and other marine creatures, sparking their curiosity and enhancing their understanding of the ocean ecosystem.

By choosing the right tour, you can ensure that your whale watching adventure is not only entertaining but also enriching for the whole family.

2.  Do Your Homework

Before setting sail on your whale watching adventure, it’s essential to do your homework. Take some time to understand the fascinating world of whales by researching the different species that inhabit the area.

Discover their behaviors, migration patterns, and unique characteristics to deepen your understanding of these majestic creatures. Encourage your kids to join in this exploration, sparking their curiosity and building excitement for the trip ahead.

3.  Bring Binoculars and Cameras

To elevate your kids’ whale watching experience, be sure to equip them with essential gear like binoculars and cameras. Binoculars offer a closer look at whales, allowing children to observe intricate details that might go unnoticed otherwise.

With binoculars in hand, they can fully immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring spectacle of these majestic creatures. Cameras are equally important, providing a means to preserve cherished memories of their encounter with whales.

Encourage your kids to snap photos of the breathtaking moments they witness, capturing the magic of the ocean and its inhabitants. These photographs not only serve as souvenirs of the trip but also inspire a deeper connection to marine life.

4.  Pack Snacks and Supplies

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable whale watching experience for your kids, it’s essential to pack all the necessary supplies. Start by stocking up on plenty of snacks and drinks to keep them energized and hydrated throughout the tour.

Opt for nutritious snacks like fruit, granola bars, and trail mix to fuel their adventure. Don’t forget to pack water bottles to keep them hydrated under the sun’s rays.

Additionally, remember to pack sunscreen, hats, and lightweight jackets to protect against sunburn and chilly ocean breezes. These items will ensure that your kids stay comfortable and protected throughout the excursion.

Lastly, consider bringing motion sickness medication for those prone to seasickness, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable ride for everyone onboard.

5.  Play Educational Games

Keep the excitement alive during your whale watching adventure by incorporating educational games that captivate your kids’ imagination. Encourage them to actively participate in the tour by playing engaging games centered around marine life.

Challenge them to spot various marine animals, from playful dolphins to majestic sea turtles, as they surface and dive through the ocean waves.

Test their knowledge of avian species by identifying different bird species soaring overhead, adding an extra dimension of discovery to the experience.

For an added thrill, invite them to guess the size of a whale based on its surfacing behavior, sparking lively discussions and enhancing their understanding of these magnificent creatures.

These educational games not only make learning fun but also foster a deeper connection to the marine environment.

6.  Encourage Curiosity

Nurture your children’s curiosity by prompting them to ask questions and explore the mysteries of whales and their marine habitat. Seize every opportunity to interact with the tour guide, delving into topics such as whale biology, ecology, and conservation.

Cultivate a spirit of wonder and exploration that ignites a lifelong passion for nature and fosters a deep appreciation for the ocean’s wonders.

7.  Promote Conservation Awareness

Use the whale watching experience as a platform to discuss the importance of marine conservation with your kids. Teach them about the threats facing whale populations, such as habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.

Encourage them to become stewards of the ocean by adopting environmentally friendly habits and supporting conservation initiatives.

That’s A Wrap

Whale watching is more than just a leisure activity; it’s an opportunity for kids to connect with nature, expand their knowledge, and develop a deep appreciation for the wonders of the marine world.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your whale watching experience is both educational and fun for the whole family. So gather your binoculars, pack your sense of adventure, and embark on a whale watching journey that your kids will cherish for a lifetime.

For its 1st time, Aquarium of the Pacific pairs releasable rescued otter pup with surrogate otter mom

The Aquarium of the Pacific is welcoming a female orphaned sea otter pup, which was rescued off the coast of Santa Cruz County. This baby sea otter is the first surrogate-raised otter at the Aquarium of the Pacific, for potential release back to the wild, as part of a partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Sea Otter Surrogacy Program. The pup is paired with an adult female sea otter at the Aquarium of the Pacific with the goal of being able to learn from her the survival skills needed to be able to return to the wild. These vital skills include foraging for food and grooming their thick fur to thrive in cold water temperatures.

Since it opened in 1998, the Aquarium of the Pacific has been providing a home for rescued sea otters deemed non-releasable to the wild by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “We are thrilled to be able to further help this threatened species recover by expanding our conservation programs to now help stranded sea otter pups get a second chance at returning to the wild,” says Brett Long, Aquarium of the Pacific senior director of birds and mammals. The Aquarium of the Pacific joined Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Otter Surrogacy Program as a partner in 2020. As part of this partnership, the Aquarium of the Pacific built a behind-the-scenes facility for the surrogate mothers and these orphaned pups.

“We’ve been working with our partners at the Aquarium of the Pacific for more than three years to reach this moment, and we’re excited they’re now ready to welcome orphaned pups for surrogacy,” said Jessica Fujii, manager of the Sea Otter Program at Monterey Bay Aquarium. “Sea otters help maintain the health of kelp forests and wetlands on California’s coast. This milestone is advancing our work to help sea otters recover from being hunted to near extinction and help strengthen our coastal ecosystems.”

The surrogacy area at the Aquarium of the Pacific was built behind the scenes of its Molina Animal Care Center and will be able to accommodate three to four rescued sea otter pups each year. The pups will be away from public view to limit human interaction to increase their chances of surviving on their own in the wild. Videos of rescued pups and signage located outside of the surrogacy facility will help educate the Aquarium’s visitors on the surrogacy program and the significance of recovering southern sea otter populations. A grant from the California’s State Coastal Conservancy Sea Otter Recovery Grant Program supported the initial construction of the sea otter surrogacy facility.

The Aquarium of the Pacific also has a public fundraising campaign to support its work with rescued sea otter pups through this program. Anyone interested in getting involved and providing support of this important conservation work can visit pacific.to/saveseaotters and make a gift online or call (562) 951-1701.

Southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) are marine mammals in the weasel family. They are currently found along the North American west coast from Half Moon Bay just south of San Francisco to Point Conception in Santa Barbara County, a fraction of their historical range. Sea otters play the important role of ecosystem engineer for their ocean habitats. Sea otters were hunted to near extinction in the early 1900s. Now a protected species, California’s sea otters have grown from a group of fifty in 1938 to nearly 3,000 today. Despite this progress, their population growth has stalled in recent years and they continue to face serious risks, including oil spills, pollution, and climate change.

Through its Pacific Visions area, visitors to the Aquarium of the Pacific can learn how climate change is impacting the ocean, its inhabitants, and people, along with what can be done to work toward a more sustainable future. The Aquarium also serves as a facility for rehabilitating and releasing sea turtles, raising endangered mountain yellow-legged frogs for release, and spawning and releasing endangered white abalone.
