The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana Art Exhibit Now Open at the Old Orange County Courthouse

Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento and OC Parks Director Pam Passow cut the ribbon for The Chicano Collection exhibition. Joining them are – (from left to right, front row) OC Parks Commissioner Ray Diaz, Santa Ana City Councilmember Johnathon Ryan Hernandez, Santa Ana Unified School District President Carolyn Torres , Tustin City Councilmember Rebecca “Beckie” Gomez, Anaheim Union High School District Trustee Jessica Guerrero, Santa Ana City Councilmember Benjamin Vasquez, (from left to right, second row) Rancho Santiago Community College District Student Trustee Ricardo Alcaraz, Tustin Unified School District President Allyson Muñiz Damikolas, Rancho Santiago Community College Trustee David Crockett, Santa Ana City Councilmember Jessie Lopez, Tustin Unified School District Vice President Jonathan Stone, Orange Unified School District Trustee Kris Erickson, Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustee Zeke Hernandez, Orange Unified School District Trustee Stephen Glass.

Chicano history and culture intersect at The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana art exhibit. Now open to the public at the Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana (211 W. Santa Ana Blvd.), the collection features images depicting urban life and the Chicano experience between 1969 and 2001.

The exhibition consists of limited-edition digital reproductions, known as giclées, of original paintings from 26 prominent Chicano artists from the private collection of actor and comedian, Cheech Marin. Marin’s collection now serves as the foundation of The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum, which opened in June 2022.

The prints were created through a national art project led by Marin with the late Richard S. Duardo of Modern Multiples Fine Art Editions and Melissa Richardson Banks of CauseConnect. In addition to the giclées, a 25-minute documentary about Chicano art and linocut portraits of each artist created by Artemio Rodriguez are on display. The exhibit will be at the Courthouse exhibit gallery through the end of the year.

“Preserving the cultural heritage within our diverse and historic communities is so important, including depictions of the story and struggle of Mexican Americans and Latinos in the Southwest. I wanted to help bring this exhibit here, since many of our residents do not have the opportunity to visit the museum in Riverside and because Orange County has played a vital role in the Chicano movement. I am very proud to have this incredible art experience available for residents and visitors at the historic Old Orange County Courthouse,” said Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento. “We join the community in celebrating Chicano Heritage Month by hosting The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana exhibition.”

The Chicano Movement has been shaped by notable leaders and activists such as Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and more for several decades. Marin has been captivated by artistic expressions of the Chicano culture and has amassed his own renowned private collection over the last 40 years. The Chicano Collection was produced to advance Chicano art as a recognized school of American art, increase public accessibility to this work in cities nationwide and help audiences understand and appreciate the richness of the culture.

Admission to The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana exhibit is free and open to view at the Old Orange County Courthouse gallery Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning August 8. Metered parking is available at the onsite lot and surrounding street parking.

For information about The Chicano Collection/La Colección Chicana art exhibit or the Old Orange County Courthouse, please visit https://www.ocparks.com/historic-sites/old-orange-county-courthouse.

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Raises Awareness During Rail Safety Month in September

The Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency, which manages the Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® service, is proud to announce initiatives in collaboration with California Operation Lifesaver (CAOL), a non-profit entity that works year-round to promote rail safety, and the Los Angeles Angels baseball team. Launching this September to coincide with Rail Safety Month, this multi-faceted strategy for enhanced rail safety education and awareness includes communications through streaming, television, digital radio, and focused geofencing.

Through this initiative, CAOL has assisted the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency distribute rail safety advertisements displayed on internet-connected televisions and streaming platforms for individuals residing within counties where railroad incidents are the most prevalent. This initiative also provides geofenced safety messaging distributed through mobile devices in such incident-laden geographical hotspots using display advertisements, in-app advertisements, and cell phone notifications. Additional steps under development for the program will involve signage installation along high-risk areas of the rail corridor and outreach to unhoused individuals in close proximity to the tracks.

In addition, a public education safety event in collaboration with the Angels will occur on September 4, 2024 and will take place at Angel Stadium, prior to the Angels’ home game. Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® will host a booth featuring rail safety experts from CAOL, who will provide attendees with valuable tips for staying safe around railroad tracks. Per the Federal Railroad Administration Public Safety Data, California leads the nation in trespassing and grade crossing fatalities. The Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner®’s Southern California route spans the LOSSAN corridor through major cities, making it crucial for the public to be aware of rail safety practices.

The Pacific Surfliner has also teamed up with the Los Angeles Angels to promote rail safety with a radio spot encouraging fans to follow safety rules and practices when near train tracks. This message will be broadcast throughout the month of September on Angels Radio AM 830 to reach a wide audience and reinforce the importance of rail safety.

“Rail Safety Month is a valuable time to communicate the importance of rail safety around the tracks in an effort to reduce trespasser incidents,” said Bryan MacDonald, Chair of the LOSSAN Agency Board of Directors. “We are proud to partner with California Operation Lifesaver and the Los Angeles Angels to aid with the urgent need to educate Californians on how to keep themselves, friends, and families safe near tracks and crossings.”

As practicing rail safety is a team effort, Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® encourages the public to follow simple safety rules whenever around train tracks, including:

  • Never walk on or along train tracks; it’s illegal, trespassing, and highly dangerous.
  • Cross train tracks only at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings and obey all warning signs and signals.
  • Stay alert around tracks. Don’t do anything that would prevent you from hearing an approaching train, such as listening to headphones or talking on the phone.
  • When boarding, remember to stay behind the marked safety line on the station platform and use handholds as you board.
  • Report suspicious items, persons, or activity immediately to the Amtrak Police Department by approaching a uniformed officer, calling (800) 331-0008, sending a text to APD11 (27311), or by calling 911.

City of Glendale Collaborates with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab for Immersive New Art Exhibition, Sept. 21

The City of Glendale’s Library, Arts & Culture Department, in collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), an operating division of Caltech and a Federally Funded Research and Development Center for NASA, is pleased to present a new exhibition titled “Blended Worlds: Experiments In Interplanetary Imagination,” at the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale, opening September 21, 2024. “Blended Worlds” is presented as part of Getty’s regional art event PST ART: Art & Science Collide which explores the intersections of art and science — past, present and in the imaginable future. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 21 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, welcoming guests to view the exhibition for the first time.

Through a series of art and science collaborations, “Blended Worlds” explores the landscape of human relationships with our ever-expanding environment. The exhibition includes artists collaborating with a team of JPL scientists and engineers to present a vision of the future that invites the viewer to consider the impact of greater connectedness with nature and its ability to foster a renewed sense of wonder and curiosity with our planet and the cosmos. Spanning a range of multimedia and cross-disciplinary works from 11 artists, “Blended Worlds” features contributions from David Bowen, Darel Carey, Ekene Ijeoma, Annette Lee, Ada Limón, Bruce Mau, Viktoria Modesta, Shane Myrbeck, Moon Ribas, Raffi Joe Wartanian and Saskia Wilson-Brown.

Some works on view incorporate publicly accessible data from missions that JPL manages for NASA, while others allow visitors to experience Earth’s wonders through scents, utilize sound to convey the vast distances between our planet and those beyond our solar system and blend heartbeats and other Earthly sounds with sonified data from Europa’s magnetic field. David Bowen’s installation tele-present wind features grass stalks attached to tilting mechanical devices that move in response to Martian wind data previously collected by NASA rover and lander missions. For Seismic Percussion, Cyborg artist Moon Ribas creates an interplanetary drum score by translating seismic data from Earth and Mars using data collected by NASA’s now-retired InSight lander.

As part of PST ART, a number of public programs and community events will also accompany the “Blended Worlds” gallery exhibition including Blended Worlds: An Evening of Art, Theater and Science hosted by Reggie Watts at the Alex Theatre in Glendale on Saturday, October 5, 2024. This free live event welcomes curious minds of all ages to celebrate interplanetary imagination through explorations in music, multi-media performances, panel discussions, theater and interactives. Doors open at 6:00 PM. Show begins at 7:30 PM.

Southern California’s landmark arts event, PST ART, returns in September 2024, presenting more than 70 exhibitions from organizations across the Southern California region exploring the intersections of art and science, both past and present. PST ART is presented by Getty. For more information about PST ART: Art & Science Collide, visit: pst.art

JPL acknowledges the generous support of the Glendale Arts & Culture Commission and the Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Trust.
