A Drawing Program That’s Different -Perfect for Young Budding Artists with a Curiosity

213060

Every once in a while a “how-to” DVD comes along that stands out among the others.  This show, Drawing with Mark, is hosted by former Disney illustrator, Mark Marderosian. What’s different is that the host takes you on a field trip first – to the science, for example to observe first-hand prehistoric animals and visit with the museum’s expert who teaches us about life in the time of dinosaurs. There are two DVDs in the series and each one contains two separate episodes.

“Drawing with Mark: A Day With The Dinosaurs and Reach For The Stars”

Reviewed by Stacy-Love Belizaire

“Drawing with Mark” is a great show to learn tips about how to draw and/or improve your drawing. Mark is really helpful and easy to understand. In “A Day with the Dinosaurs” I learned how to draw a pterodactyl and a T-rex. Mark visits the Museum of Boston and speaks with an expert to learn more about them and to get an idea of how the dinosaurs lived, what they ate and how long they lived. I learned that sometimes they call dinosaurs very large lizards.

In the other episode, “Reach for the Stars,” I learned how to draw an astronaut and the planet Saturn, the planet with the rings around it. At the Museum of Boston, he speaks with another expert about the stars, the galaxy, the astronauts and of course, Saturn. I also learned how far we are from the stars. I thought that the stars were probably about 270 miles from us, but they are actually millions of miles from us. That’s really far! You can see the stars look kind of close, but they are so far away!!

Mark taught me that a drawing takes time and you don’t need to rush. Always draw the stick figure, the foundation, before you start adding details and other special little things. You need to draw the outline and just sketch it, don’t hold your pencil too hard; sketch lightly and softly.

I recommend this show to anyone who loves to draw and wants to improve their drawing. You can have fun with the tips he gives you which may lead you to become and artist or to illustrate books. I give the show 5 stars out of 5 and recommend it to all ages because, it’s never too late to learn to draw. “Drawing with Mark” is a really fun, artistic and colorful program that will be open a new world to future artists around the world.

“Drawing With Mark: Happy Tails and Ice Cream”

Reviewed by Valdi Belizaire

If you love drawing like me, then you’ll love “Drawing with Mark.” This show teaches kids how to draw while also teaching them their shapes and some history about the things they draw.  Kids also learn three or four fun facts about what they are drawing.

The “Happy Tails” part of this show is about cats and dogs and how to draw them.  He also talks about how much responsibility it is to have a dog. You have to groom it, take care of it, bring it to the vet and feed it. In the “Ice Cream” episode, Mark goes to the ice cream shop and learns about children’s favorite ice cream flavors and you’ll never guess – it’s cake batter flavor! When I heard this I thought that it was funny because I would never think that they would make a cake batter flavored ice cream.

I like that this show helped me be a better artist and I learned how to draw a dog and a cat better than I already did. I also learned how to draw an ice cream truck and a man holding an ice cream cone. I love watching this because I learned a lot and it made me understand the fundamentals of drawing. I also like that they included a live-action human with animated characters. I also like it when they went into the ice cream shop and saw Crystal Cat in the toppings section. It was funny because they were talking about all of the toppings that the kids pick every time they come in and Crystal Cat was right there so they started laughing. There is no underlying message in this story, because it’s about drawing except maybe that no matter how old you are, you can draw big things.

I recommend this show to anyone that loves to draw to express their feelings, or to just have fun. I recommend this for people ages six and older because anyone can draw if they want to. I would give this DVD four out of five because overall I liked it but I wish that it had more music.

Update: Giveaway has been added!! Two winners will win their own Drawing With Mark DVD! Leave a comment below telling us why you would like to win! Deadline to enter in November 14th, 2013 at midnight. Two winners will randomly be selected from all entries!

The holidays are quickly approaching and it really is time to start thinking about holiday gifts! I have always loved photo gifts because they seem so personalized and thoughtful. I had the opportunity to turn one of my photos into canvas by easy canvas prints and am quite impressed with the experience and the product. First of all, the website is absolutely user-friendly. The most difficult part was just selecting the photo I wanted to use. Next, I received my canvas print quickly. This is important around the holidays especially when thinking about ordering online. But, the best thing of all was when I received my canvas. It looks amazing and I love the quality! It actually makes my photo look like a professional print! So, if you are looking for the perfect gift this holiday season, I really do recommend checking out www.easycanvasprints.com. They also have great deals going on such as 25% of all canvas & free standard shipping.

Looking for other recommended sites for more custom print options or ideas? You can also check out these websites:  www.buildasign.com and www.alliedshirts.com. THE DIRTY SOCK FUNTIME BAND IS BACK!

PromoImage

“The Dirty Sock Funtime Band:  This band may have the perfect name for dancing feet.  The group’s music is a signature mix of rock, funk, hip-hop and country.”  — The New York Times

“Don’t let the wigs and bright clothes fool you:  The Dirty Sock Funtime Band is the closest thing to arena rock that the New York kids’ music scene has got.”  — Time Out New York Kids
NEW YORK — They’re back!  That wild Technicolor musical adventure known as The Dirty Sock Funtime Band is poised to hit the ground running with the October release of their all-new CD, The Dirty Socks Come Clean, featuring kids’ music luminary Laurie Berkner as special guest.

The Dirty Sock Funtime Band burst onto the national scene when hits “Dino-Soaring,” “Music Everywhere,” and “No Good Reason Party” aired as music videos on Nick Jr.’s Jack’s Big Music Show, demonstrating a fun, musically intelligent, and rocking side of the kids’ music scene that few had experienced before.  The band’s high energy, thoroughly irresistible music has literally circled the globe through live performances at U.S. Navy bases in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, along with wildly acclaimed outings from coast to coast in the U.S.

The Dirty Socks Come Clean gives kids the grooves to get them dancing, the stories to keep them listening, and a host of outrageous characters, with humor that’s wild and crazy but never cloying.  The stunning impact of the band’s energy is balanced by the cleverness of its compositions and the smartness of lyrics that offer large words and large ideas.  For parents, the songs are just plain good rock music, filled with hip, witty references and absolutely superb musicality.

Inhabiting a world where anything can happen, The Dirty Socks Come Clean runs an extraordinary gamut of musical styles, from “We’re in Love,” a bit of laid-back 1930s swing where kids’ music superstar Laurie Berkner fronts the band with a “pitch perfect” girl singer lead, to the steel pan-drenched Caribbean calypso rhythms of Soca in the humorous “Garbage Bugs,” to “I’m Hungry,” where Eastern European flavors of gypsy and klezmer blend in a tantalizing dish of zany wordplay.  “Hold of the Sun” offers driving vocals (with a tip of the hat to The Beatles) and a hot Stratocaster-type guitar solo, while the African-flavored “Danceology” offers an even hotter horn line that sizzles with pure dance music fever. The Dirty Socks Come Clean balances these energy blasts with several tender and heartfelt ballads like “Mama’s Song,” co-written by Chris Barron of Spin Doctors.

Known as the highest energy kids’ rock band ever to break out of NYC,The Dirty Sock Funtime Band is an outgrowth of Kids Creative, a tremendously successful, non-profit rock ‘n’ roll peace education program for NYC kids in which, among other activities, schoolchildren write and perform original rock ‘n’ roll musicals.  Since the establishment of Kids Creative in 2000, enthusiastic parents had been urging co-founders, brothers Stephen and Adam Jacobs, to make available to the general public the music they’d been writing for and with the kids.  Notes Adam Jacobs, “We were writing music for our Kids Creative classes and distributing as many as six albums to families every year.  We needed a name for the band in order to release our first album, The Search and Rescue of Genius Backpack, and Stephen came up with ‘The Dirty Sock Funtime Band.’  We played our first live show in March 2004, and the rest is history.”

My son and I received this CD to review and it is high energy and packed with fun songs! We give it a thumbs up! It has songs that kids will love!

This debut DVD from beloved vocalist Mama Doni offers a range of music styles all celebrating the Jewish holidays of Chanukah, Passover and Shabbat. Eric Lindberg, her talented musician accompanies her on the guitar, dobro, ganjo, mandolin and ukele. As 11-year-old KIDS FIRST! Mama Doni’s Jewish Holiday Party

Full video review available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lDxgUOkU-s

Do you know what Chanukah, Passover and Shabbat are?  Whether or not you do, you’ll have a blast watching Mama Doni in this very fun three-episode Holiday Party DVD.

This DVD is great for when you want to celebrate a Jewish holiday but you don’t know how. Doni tells you everything you need to know about getting into the holiday spirit – the Jewish Holiday Spirit, as she takes you through the Winter Holiday of Chanukah, the spring holiday of Passover and the weekly holiday of Shabbat.

The main character, of course, is Mama Doni. She has many friends, young and old, that pop in throughout the show.  But she is the star!  We learn about all three holidays thru some new takes on old Jewish songs as well as some new songs.  They are all upbeat and fun to listen to.  She also tells many great stories as she guides us through her kitchen and shares some wonderful recipes on classic dishes like latkes, challah bread and a new one I wouldn’t call an old classic but something that I sure want to try – matzo pizza!

My 8-year-old sister and I were so inspired that we made the Challah Bread and the Latkes right away.  They were both very delicious!

I like the lighting and how it compliments Mama Doni’s face.  She is such an energetic and appealing host. With all the movement going on, the camera man does a great job by giving us clear and steady shots. I also enjoyed the editing because it isn’t too fast or too slow and I like seeing Mama Doni in different settings and outfits.

I think what this film teaches families is that celebrating holidays is fun even if it is not your practiced religion.  I’d even say these three episodes have nothing to do with religion at all as it celebrates the Jewish Culture and not whose God you believe in.

I give this show 5 out of 5 stars because it is lively and there is never a dull moment.

I think this film is appropriate for all ages because you can watch these three episodes and learn new interesting stuff with your family that you have never experienced before.

Mama Doni’s Jewish Holiday Party is available on DVD.

CHILL Returns to the Queen Mary November 22

chill_img_2000_fpo_lo_res

Beginning November 22, the Queen Mary will be overtaken by a deep freeze for the second annual CHILL, a experience that will bring holiday cheer, enchantment and North Pole temperatures to families across sunny Southern California.

An event like no other, CHILL offers an unforgettable holiday experience. Two million pounds of sparkling ice are used to create larger than life, hand carved ice sculptures that will fill a 14,000 square-foot “igloo” called The Ice Kingdom (housed in The Queen Mary’s Dome). The Ice Kingdom will feature scenes from The Nutcracker including life sized reproductions of Clara, the evil Mouse King, the battle scene, sugar plum fairies and The Nutcracker himself, plus a walk-through castle, and three ice slides off a 30’ high replica of The Queen Mary.  Each ice exhibit is meticulously hand carved and created by an international team of ice sculpture experts from Harbin, China and enhanced with LED lighting to create a visually spectacular experience like no other. The Ice Kingdom is kept at a frosty nine degrees Fahrenheit to preserve the ice and event goers will receive parkas to help protect against the Artic-like climate.

CHILL also brings ice tubing to the Queen Mary waterfront. Grab an oversized tube and race down one of the six ice slides standing two stories tall and 100-feet long. A 6,000 square-foot ice skating rink makes for the perfect winter tradition for all to enjoy. Skate rentals are available on-site for $2.95. A holiday village presents gingerbread houses, holiday carolers, the decoration adorned Candy Lane and a visit with Santa Claus. The world’s largest rocking horse and snowman bouncy are ready for holiday merriment by guests both young and young at heart.

“We are very excited for the return of CHILL as an annual seasonal tradition for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Steve Sheldon, director of entertainment events at The Queen Mary. “It’s truly unique to experience the cold winter holiday weather of other areas right here in Southern California. It immediately gets you into the holiday spirit.”

CHILL will also feature live entertainment, food and beverages. Pricing starts at $29.95 for adults and $14.95 for kids, and includes The Ice Kingdom and choice of Ice Skating or Ice Tubing. Additional tickets for either Ice Skating or Ice Tubing are available for purchase and start at $12.95. Ice Skating Season Pass is available for $29.95. Lodging packages are also available. CHILL will be open Tuesdays through Sundays beginning Nov. 22 through Jan. 5. For more information, including hours or to purchase tickets online, visit http://queenmary.com/chill/.

Turkeys Have Feelings Too!

FreeBirds

Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday comes the PG-rated film, “Free Birds” starring Owen Wilson, George Takei, Amy Poehler and Woody Harrelson. It’s the story about two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks who put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history – and get turkey off the holiday menu for good. As KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Molly J. says, “You should think twice before you eat that Thanksgiving turkey this year!” See her full review below.

You should think twice before you eat that Thanksgiving turkey this year!  Especially after you watch the movie, “Free Birds”!  This is a wonderful animated comedy, packed with lots of action and adventure.  Two turkeys team up to travel back in time to try to take turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good.  If this doesn’t sound funny enough, these two turkeys have nothing in common with each other, argue constantly, and run into some hilarious situations when they travel back to pilgrim days.

In order to change the course of history, the turkeys, Reggie (Owen Wilson) and Jake (Woody Harrelson), must first learn to get along and put aside their differences.  Reggie is a smart, although a rather lazy and weak turkey, while Jake is a strong and brave turkey, but very dumb.  This duo makes for some great comedy!  Then a female turkey that Reggie has a crush on makes it even funnier!  This role of Jenny is voiced by the very funny Amy Poehler, which could not have been cast any better.

The director, Jimmy Hayward, also directed “Horton Hears a Who!”  He is also known for his work on “Finding Nemo,” “Toy Story,” “Monsters Inc.,” and many more great animated hits.  The soundtrack for “Free Birds” is also great.

My favorite scene in this movie is when Jake rescues a bunch of baby turkeys, chicks, from a blazing fire.  These adorable, tiny puffballs are clinging to his feathers, and looking up at this massive hero with huge eyes.  It is just too cute!

“Free Birds” is a family movie that is great for all ages.  I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars.  So don’t miss out!  Go see this movie when it opens at theaters near you on Nov. 3rd.
