Queen Mary Celebrates Art Deco With Largest Collection In The World

art_deco_ad_250x250

It is a rare opportunity to become immersed in a time period other than your own. But that is exactly what The Queen Mary is presenting August 30 – September 2. This Labor Day Weekend, the 9th Annual Queen Mary Art Deco Festival welcomes visitors to step aboard the largest Art Deco collection in the world.

The Queen Mary and Art Deco Society of Los Angeles celebrate an art form that has influenced design in visual arts, furniture, fashion, architecture, and ocean liners for nearly a century. “We’re growing the festival,” says John Thomas, The Queen Mary Historic Resources Advisor and President of the Los Angeles Art Deco Society. “We continue to restore The Queen Mary, perhaps the best living monument to Art Deco, and every year our festival draws more people because of its authenticity.”

With more than 8,000 people expected to attend various Queen Mary events over the Labor Day Weekend, this year’s festival should prove to be the largest in its history.

The Queen Mary epitomizes an art movement at its zenith. “Art Deco defines a visual expression, mindset, and lifestyle of an era,” Thomas says. “What better place to stage an Art Deco event. There are prime examples around every corner,” denotes Thomas. “We appeal to a broad spectrum of enthusiasts, students, tourists, curiosity seekers, and philanthropists,” says Thomas. “We’re preserving an art form, while conserving The Queen Mary.” One hundred percent of the Art Deco Grand Ball proceeds fund on-going Queen Mary conservation initiatives.

Most devotees would agree the themed Pajama Derby and Art Deco Grand Ball, featuring today’s top talent of the era including Dean Mora OrchestraIan Whitcom and Bungalow Boys, and Jim Zeiglerare the weekend highlights. However, these two events may prove to be the “opening act” with the return of the sell-out Sunday Tea Dance and first-ever recreation of the famed Starlight Lounge. Both will deliver vintage libations, velvety tunes and a smokin’ hot dance floor.

For those looking to “Deco”rate, the Vintage Bazaar and Auto Display attract vendors as far away as the United Kingdom. Many sellers and collectors return year after year to showcase their unique merchandise and collectables to the highly coveted clientele.

Throughout the weekend, the Art Deco Lecture Series will dive into topics ranging from architecture and automotive to musicology. For the night owls and vintage film buffs the Movie and Martinis Under the Stars celebrate Hollywood’s Golden Age with The Queen Mary regular Bob Hope as he graces the silver screen in “The Big Broadcast of 1939”.

A la carte tickets are available starting at $15 to suit the interest of every festivalgoer. Art Deco aficionados can take advantage of The Art Deco Grand Passport or Hotel Package offering a total weekend immersion starting at $295.

FAN FAVORITE “DOC MCSTUFFINS” DEBUTS IN THE DISNEY JUNIOR APPISODE APP FOR iPAD, iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH

image003

Two interactive episodes of Disney Junior’s popular series “Doc McStuffins” are now available as a brand new appisode on the Disney Junior Appisode app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch for $4.99.

Developed by Disney/ABC Television Group’s Digital Media team, the Disney Junior Appisode app offers true interactive viewing, allowing fans 2-7 to touch, tap, swipe, tilt, shake and talk their way through various fun-filled activities embedded into full episodes of some of their favorite Disney Junior shows.

In “Rescue Ronda, Ready For Takeoff,” Doc must diagnose and extract a twig from a toy helicopter’s propellers. Key features that allow kids to fully engage with the episode include, among others:

–        Tilting their device to fly Rescue Ronda

–        Touching and dragging tools from Doc’s medical bag to help make the diagnosis

–        Using Doc’s tweezers to help remove the twig

The second episode, “A Bad Case of the Pricklethorns,” finds another of Doc’s toy friends in a thorny situation. When blow-up toy Boppy springs a leak, Doc and her pals bandage him up and show him how to avoid it happening again. Kids play along by:

–        Bobbing Boppy

–        Tapping the screen to help Doc’s toys “go stuffed”

–        Guiding a band aid to cover Boppy’s boo boo

–        Among other activities

A hit worldwide, the original animated series “Doc McStuffins,” about a little girl who can talk to and heal stuffed animals and toys out of her playhouse clinic, was 2012’s #1 cable TV series in Kids 2-5.* “Doc McStuffins” airs daily on Disney Channel and Disney Junior.

The Disney Junior Appisode app launched in April 2013 with “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse – Mickey and Donald Have a Farm Appisode” and “Jake and the Never Land Pirates Appisode,”which features “Hide the Hideout” and “Captain Hook’s Hooks,” both of which are available for $4.99. A free download of the original “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally Appisode” is included with the Disney Junior Appisode app download.

With the launch of “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally Appisode” app last year, Disney Junior introduced an innovative new way for kids to enjoy their favorite shows. Well received by both fans and the industry, the app topped iTunes charts for weeks – making it to #1 on the Overall Free list – and won the 2012 Mobile Excellence Award for Best Content Extension Made for Mobile, as well as the iKids award for Best Web/App Series.

Over the past several years, the Disney/ABC Television Group has consistently launched innovative apps for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Most notably, WATCH ABCWATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney Junior and WATCH Disney XD, all of which enable authenticated customers to access live streaming of linear channel feeds, as well as on demand episodes of popular shows.   The group also recently launched “Doc McStuffins Time for Your Check Up” app, which lets kids use their device to help diagnose and treat Doc’s toys.

Kidobi

From an early age, children spend more time in front of screens than on any other activity, except sleep.  Children learn from what they watch, and while some content is safe and educational, other content that isn’t age-appropriate can be harmful.  As you know, parents need to be aware of the type of content their children watch while providing a fun environment where they can use technology to learn and grow.

Kidobi is an online video content provider for children ages 2 – 6 that removes parents’ guesswork by automatically generating customized video playlists, completely personalized to fit children’s learning needs and developmental stage.  Since all the videos are pre-screened by educators and child development experts, parents are reassured of the age-appropriate, educational value. My son and I checked it out (even though he is slightly too old for this website) and we were impressed with the great pre-school videos! We give it a thumbs-up for children ages 2-6!

GODDESS GARDEN ORGANICS

Logosunscreen

Is there a difference between Natural and Conventional Sunscreens? I really didn’t know the answer to this question until I heard about GODDESS GARDEN ORGANICS and had the opportunity to receive and review their products. I love that there are no harsh chemicals in the Natural Sunscreen! Only Natural sunscreen ingredients such as sunflower, radish, and active ingredients like zinc and titanium. We received the Sunny Kids Natural Sunscreen continuous spray (6 oz retails for $21.99) and we found that the natural ingredients are as effective as those found in conventional sunscreens. My son and I actually found it to be more effective because they seem to work right away. There is no waiting 15-20 minutes after you apply them before they start protecting from sunburn. The Natural Sunscreen is easy to apply and provides SPF 30 Broad-Spectrum UVA/UVB coverage without chemicals and is 94% certified organic.

As a new mother, Nova was inspired to create organic skincare products initially for her daughter Paige, who was allergic to chemicals in traditional bath products. Motivated to develop safe skincare solutions, Nova launched natural products using pure minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the active agents for sun protection — the highest organic content of any sunscreen on the market.

In 2009, Goddess Garden launched a line of Organic Sunscreen products that protect and nourish without harsh sunscreen chemicals. This long-lasting SPF 30 sunscreen is made with sheer minerals that reflect 97% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. Goddess Garden’s line of organic sun care products is water resistant to 40 minutes, non-greasy, absorbs quickly and nourishes sensitive skin with the highest percentage of organic ingredients available in a sunscreen—up to 94 percent!
