SteveSongs (“Mr. Steve,” co-host of the nationally broadcast PBS KIDS preschool destination) and family music stars Recess Monkey want families to jump on the bandwagon for fire safety during National Fire Prevention Week, October 5 – 11. 2014.
The National Fire Protection Association’s friendly mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog®, joins SteveSongs and Recess Monkey in inviting kids, teachers, and families to have fun exploring the world of fire safety. The place to start is www.sparkyschoolhouse.org, the “Sparky Schoolhouse” website, where apps, music videos, lesson plans, activity sheets, an e-book, and games for kids age 3 – 10 are available for free download.

The key elements to fire safety are celebrated in high-energy music videos created especially for NFPA by SteveSongs and Recess Monkey. On SteveSongs’ “Little Rosalie,” kids can sing and dance along as Rosalie and her little brother learn the four important steps to follow when they hear the smoke alarm. Recess Monkey’s “What’s That Sound?” takes a thrilling ride on Sparky’s flying smoke alarm while kids learn what it takes to stay fire safe.
New this fall is The Case of the Missing Smoke Alarms, a free app that’s jam-packed with games, activities, coloring pages, and lots more.
Everyone needs to know how to stay safe in case of fire, and this is especially true for kids. The key to fire safety for children is to teach them that when they hear the beep, beep, beep of a smoke alarm, they need to get out of the house and find a safe, outside meeting place.
