Eddie the Eagle – Based on a True “Never Give Up” Story

Eddie the Eagle

Inspired by true events, Eddie the Eagle is a feel-good story about Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton), an unlikely but courageous British ski jumper who never stopped believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach (played by Hugh Jackman), Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Ryan R. comments, “I was truly delighted to watch the new film, Eddie the Eagle because it is an astoundingly energizing and powerful film.” Mia A. adds, “I absolutely love Eddie the Eagle! This… is an inspiring movie because Eddie is just a regular guy who does amazing things. It makes people like me who watch this movie feel like they could do anything!” See their full reviews below.

I absolutely love Eddie the Eagle! This film, directed by Dexter Fletcher, is an inspiring movie because Eddie is just a regular guy who does amazing things. It makes people like me who watch this movie feel like they could do anything!
Eddie the Eagle is based on a true story about a boy named Michael Edwards, known as Eddie (Taron Egerton) who grew up in Great Britain in the 1960s. Eddie always wanted to be in the Olympics, but he had weak knees so all his doctors said not to do sports and to give up. Regardless of his doctor’s advice, he tried lots of sports, but never successfully did any of them right. When he goes to his dad’s work after giving up on this dream he sees a ski slope. From then on, Eddie is determined to get into the Winter Olympics. When he fails to get on the Great Britain downhill ski team for the Olympics, he learns about ski jumping. As there are no ski jumping locations in Great Britain, he travels to Germany. There he tries to learn ski jumping in order to get into the Olympics. He meets a former Olympic ski jumper, Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman) and tries to get Bronson to coach him. Will Eddie get to the Olympics, get Bronson to coach or win the Olympics?
My favorite scene is when Eddie sets a new distance jumping record and he flaps around like an eagle and has the best time of his life. This scene is uplifting and funny.
The cinematography in Eddie the Eagle is really intense and makes you feel as if you are right there! Whenever someone gets ready to go down the ski jump ramp and lands, you feel like cheering!
There are lots of morals in this movie including: follow your dreams, winning isn’t always achieving, never give up on your dreams, when you love what you do giving up is never the answer, and many more.
I rate this movie a 5 out of 5 stars because it is inspiring and has a gripping story. I recommend it for ages 8 to 18 because there are some sexual references, like when Bronson makes an imitation of making love with a celebrity. There are also some injuries, like when someone tries to ski jump they fall and hurt themself badly they can’t move.
If you love adventure, and rooting for the underdog, go see Eddie the Eagle in theaters near you!

Interview with Michael “Eddie” Edwards:

I was truly delighted to watch the new film, Eddie the Eagle because it is an astoundingly energizing and powerful film. I love to watch films based on true stories and this is an unquestionably good one. In this film, you will see the story of Michael “Eddie” Edwards, an Olympic British ski jumper and learn how his determination enabled him to participate in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

This movie tells the story of Eddie the Eagle (Taron Egerton) and shows the tough obstacles that Eddie overcame to achieve his dream of participating in the Olympics.

I love how this movie doesn’t feel rushed. I love the casting. Taron Egerton looks identical to real Eddie and plays him with conviction. Hugh Jackman also gives a great performance. Jo Hartley, who plays Eddie’s mom, gives a stunning performance of a mother who supports her child’s dreams no matter what. The 80s soundtrack also plays an important role in the movie, since it is the type of music that was around when Eddie made his jump. This year is the 28th anniversary of when he made his ski jump in the 1988 Winter Olympics.

The moral of this movie is never give up no matter what. We see that when individuals don’t have faith in Eddie and think his fantasy of setting off to the Olympics is an exercise in senselessness that he would never be capable of achieving. We see how Eddie never gives up. He is persistent, even though people think he is crazy. Eddie never gives up on what he believes in and does his best. Throughout this movie you see Eddie overcome obstacles and he never gives up. This is definitely a good movie for kids to see, especially if they have been put down, taunted, bullied or told they can’t do something they love to do. They can benefit from seeing this film.

I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to kids ages 5 to 18. I think adults will like this film as well. Those who like docudramas and family movies will particularly enjoy it.

It’s both fun and educational as you learn fun facts about the port, Queen Mary, Sea Lions and more! You can also go on a longer cruise because they have Whale Watching Cruises too. This one is my favorite though because it is a nice calm and fun experience! They are open daily and what a great thing to do this holiday season!

Look out Black Friday & Cyber Monday: here comes Goodshop Sunday!

There’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but where’s the holiday spirit? Goodshop Sunday (November 30th) is the day where thousands of merchants will be offering great deals and coupons AND donating a percentage of nearly every purchase back to the shopper’s favorite nonprofit or school!

Nearly 70% of online shoppers say they feel at least a little guilty that they are not donating more of the money they use to shop for gifts*. On Goodshop Sunday, feel guilty no more!

Leading up to the day, thousands of stores (including AmazonOld Navy, Target, and Kohl’s) will have the best coupons and deals listed on Goodshop.com and will donate a percentage of nearly every purchase to the users’ favorite cause – for free!  In addition, on Goodshop Sunday, select retailers are offering double donations, while others are sharing exclusive deals– so people can feel extra good about their holiday shopping!

Passionate cause supporters nationwide are taking the #GoodshopSunday pledge – to buy 1 gift that gives back this holiday season – and spreading the word to get their friends to do the same. Photos of people forming the “hand heart” are being shared across social media– acting as the visual confirmation of their pledge and the promise that holiday shopping can make a difference.

The impact of buying just 1 gift that gives back can be significant. “According to the National Retail Federation, Americans will spend over $100 billion online on holiday shopping this year,” said Scott Garell, Goodshop CEO. “With an average of 3% of our sales going to nonprofits and schools, Goodshoppers have the potential to help raise $3 billion for causes in need!”

“This is simply a no brainer,” said Goodshopper, Lisa Grander. “I always feel like I wish I could do more to help Best Friends Animal Society during the holidays — now with every gift I buy, I can!  And, I can save money at the same time too.”

More than 110,000 causes are participating and it’s up to the shopper to select who they want to support. To bring that home – if you support the ASPCA, one sweater would raise enough to get two dogs adopted into loving homes.  If you support UNICEF, your purchase of an Xbox  could donate enough to provide therapeutic milk to fourteen malnourished children.  To date, Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for causes.

Plus, while there will be special deals on Goodshop Sunday, shoppers can find deals and donations all year long. Goodshop helps shoppers save more than just money!

Here are some sample holiday deals:

Amazon Coupon – Free shipping on purchases over $35 (1.5% donation)

Sephora Coupon – Choose 1 of 3 Holiday Deluxe Sample Bags with any $25 purchase with code (2.5% donation)

Ice Age: Continental Drift – A Winner for the Younger Set by KIDS FIRST! Coming Attractions

Want a film to take your younger kids to? This fourth installment in the “Ice Age” films delivers what I think your youngest kids will truly enjoy (5-10). It really makes great use of 3D technology with characters zooming towards us and away from us throughout the entire film. We are charmed by many of the same characters from the previous films – Manny the Mammoth voiced by Ray Romano, Sid the Sloth by John Leguizamo and Diego the saber-toothed tiger by Denis Leary. This crew is joined by a new host of characters including Manny’s wife played by Queen Latifah, their daughter played by the adorable Keke Palmer, Granny voiced by Wanda Sykes  and more. One of our youth critics, Julianna Noone (age 12) rated this film 5 out of 5 stars because “it is funny, well written and has a great message for the audience.”  [Read more…]

‘Spider-Man’ on the Red Carpet and the Silver Screen KIDS FIRST! Coming Attractions

Marvel Comics’ heroes transfer well to the silver screen, but those who think they know Spider-Man from previous incarnations will meet a different Spider-Man/Peter Parker in Columbia Pictures’ current release The Amazing Spider-Man. “… it is a completely different film that starts at the beginning of Spider-Man’s journey,” says KIDS FIRST! youth film critic Raven Devanney, age 15, in her review (below). Well, maybe not completely different, as the familiar events set the story in motion. But it is a new villain and a new love interest. And there is plenty of humor. “In fact, this whole film is filled with comedy and action,” says Raven.

KIDS FIRST! youth film critics were also there at the exciting red carpet event on Saturday. Be sure to check out the KIDS FIRST! website to share their experience on video.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Reviewed by Raven Devanney

The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone definitely lives up to its title because it is truly amazing. I was expecting this film to be an add-on to the most recent Spider-Man series, but it is a completely different film that starts at the beginning of Spider-Man’s journey. Of course, Peter Parker (played by Andrew Garfield) is bitten by a genetically modified spider and transforms into Spider-Man, his uncle Ben dies, and that’s all the same in the past films about this spandex-sporting hero, but instead of falling for his typical love interest, MJ, Peter falls for Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone). And there is no Green Goblin in this film, but instead a new villain for Spider-Man to face.

I love this movie! The special effects are phenomenal, especially in 3-D. I love Andrew Garfield in the part of Peter Parker because he does a fantastic job portraying him and he and Emma Stone have such great chemistry, which really shows in their characters. My favorite scene is when Peter is transforming into Spider-Man, because his aunt and uncle have no idea what’s wrong with him and it’s so funny. In fact, this whole film is filled with comedy and action. My favorite character would have to be Gwen Stacy played by Emma Stone because I really admire her and she does a wonderful job playing this role.

I think something very different about this film is it seems that the target audience is just teens, whereas in past Spider-Man movies the main audience is teens and adults. Overall, I give The Amazing Spider-Man 5 out of 5 stars because it is amazing and I want to see it over and over again. I can’t wait for the sequel to come out. Go catch it in a theater near you!
