OC Zoo animals will join the fun as they receive treat-filled pumpkins throughout the day, and the first 100 children in costume ages 12 and under will receive a free gift.

“Thank you to the staff at the OC Zoo for their quick action and hard work to ensure the safety of our animals and restoring their habitats after the Canyon Fire 2,” said Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer. “I am grateful that the zoo was not damaged and want to invite visitors to help welcome back the animals at this family-friendly event. You won’t want to miss this fun and safe celebration.”

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Fluttershy – Lively, Cheerful, Exciting Adventures and Lessons About Life

MLPFIMFluttershy

Not every Pegasus pony in Equestria is the same. Just ask Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy. While Rainbow Dash is bold and daring, Fluttershy is quite reserved and caring. But that’s what makes Fluttershy such a wonderful friend to everyone around her, whether they’re her pony friends, like Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Applejack and, yes, even Rainbow Dash , or her non-equestrian friends, like Angel the bunny. Join in for five adventures that feature every pony’s lovably quiet Pegasus, Fluttershy. KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Sahiba K. comments, “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Fluttershy… is lively and cheerful! The storylines are well thought out, with plots that relate to real life.” Samantha M. adds, “This delightful animated series brought me back to my childhood. With many comedic jokes, valuable life lessons and exciting adventures, there is something for everyone to enjoy.” See their full review below.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Fluttershy

By Sahiba K., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 15

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Fluttershy, created by Lauren Faust is lively and cheerful! The storylines are well thought out, with plots that relate to real life. The variety of the personalities of each pony creates a realistic atmosphere where everyone is accepted. Each episode teaches how to deal with certain setbacks and different realistic situations through colorful and merry narratives.

The story follows a pony named Fluttershy (Andrea Libman) who is timid and would do anything for friendships. She adventures through life with her fellow ponies including Rarity (Tabitha St. Germain) and Rainbow Dash (Ashleigh Ball), facing different challenges and never giving up. They maintain their friendships no matter what.

Andrea Libman is the voice actor for Fluttershy and has a high pitch but soft-toned voice. This builds upon her personality as a shy, timid pony. When she lowers her voice to a light tone, one can tell she is feeling shy and when her voice rises, one can tell she is feeling more confident. Tabitha St. Germain voices Rarity who also has a high pitch voice. However, she uses more inflections in her voice to show how excited Rarity is.

The animation and the sound effects are the highlights of this DVD. There are many different colors used throughout for the skin and hair of the ponies and for the scenic backgrounds. The variety of these colors is very visually appealing. The animation of the ponies’ eyes convey a multitude of emotions. For example, when a pony is excited, its eyes widen. When they are scared, their pupils shrink. And when they are shy, their eyes look down. The sound effects add more emotion to the scenes. Different sound effects emerge as different words are emphasized. When Fluttershy is mad, loud and low sound effects further accentuate these emotions.

My favorite part was seeing how all the ponies in different colors, shapes and sizes. Everyone gets along and nobody cares how their friends or fellow ponies look. It is an analogy for real life.

The messages are about the importance of friendship and about never giving up despite the circumstances. I give this DVD 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 10. Check out My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Fluttershy when it’s released nationwide on DVD September 12, 2017.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Fluttershy

By Samantha M., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 17

This delightful animated series brought me back to my childhood. With many comedic jokes, valuable life lessons and exciting adventures, there is something for everyone to enjoy. There are six Pegasus ponies who are unique in every way. You are certainly able to relate to at least one of them. Join Fluttershy and her friends in five enticing adventures to find out which pony you truly are.

Elaborating upon the importance of friendship and self confidence, this series documents Fluttershy’s journey through life. Fluttershy is a timid pony, but she will do anything to stick up for her friends. Watch how Fluttershy discovers who she really is with the help of her friends Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Rarity.

Tabitha St. Germain, who plays Rarity, successfully portrays a teenage girl through Rarity’s desire to shine bright in the fashion world. In the episode, “Green Isn’t Your Color,” Rarity urges Fluttershy (Andrea Libman) to model for Photo Finish, a famous fashion designer. Libman’s sweet voice acting characterizes Fluttershy as a shy pony with a beautiful heart. You can hear the confidence build up in her voice with every new adventure she experiences.

The animation in this series is incredible. Compared to the My Little Pony that I watched as a kid, these Pegasus ponies are depicted as teenagers instead of children. The ponies are older, bigger and more knowledgeable, which makes them very relatable. Even though the ponies are older, their charm and kind hearts continue to grow, yet they still manage to enjoy life just like little kids, with no worries in the world.

My favorite part is when Spike tells Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie that he has a crush on Rarity. I love how Spike completely trusts Rarity’s friends to keep a secret. Friendship is extremely important and Spike is very lucky to have such caring friends.

The message of the series is to value friendships that you make with others. Friends help you become a better person and they always have your back. No matter what happens in your life, as long as you have a good friend when the world seems to turn on you, you’ll be fine. I give this DVD 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to ages 6 to 12. Teenagers and adults will love it too, since friendship is applicable to everyone. This DVD is available now, so check it out. It is sure to warm your heart.

This is the complete movie, with all its scenes intact. This clay-animated masterpiece was written and directed by Gumby Creator Art Clokey and showcases Gumby, Pokey, Prickle, Goo, the Blockheads, Professor Kapp and introduces the Clayboys and singing sensation Tara. Gumby rocks out with the Clayboys for a concert benefiting local farmers. But things go awry when Gumby s arch enemies, the Blockheads, dognap his pet pooch, Lowbelly! Bad turns to worse when the Blockheads also kidnap the band…and replace them with clones! The battle between Clayboys and clones is filled with trains and planes, knights and fights, thrills and spills! True to classic Gumby adventures, The Gumby Movie takes viewers in and out of books, to Toyland, Camelot, outer space and beyond! KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Gerry O. comments, “This is the youngest of the Gumby series and is far from the best. However, even though there are some moments that could be improved on, The Gumby Movie still delivers the timeless entertaining charm that the earlier decades of the Gumby series are so famous for.” KIDS FIRST! Adult Juror, Rachael V. adds, “The movie is a well done flashback to the series and has the same goofy animation and weird storylines.” See their full reviews below.

The Gumby Movie
By Gerry O., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, Age 15

This is the youngest of the Gumby series and is far from the best. However, even though there are some moments that could be improved on, The Gumby Movie still delivers the timeless entertaining charm that the earlier decades of the Gumby series are so famous for.

This film follows the trend of the show by concentrating on Gumby’s adventures. There are some light action scenes to keep these adventures exciting as well as a few jokes that the whole family can enjoy.

The Gumby Movie’s plot is about Gumby and his friends attempting to stage a concert. During the concert, two investors in the audience accidentally find out that Gumby’s dog (Lowbelly) cries pearls when he listens to their music. They come up with a scheme to steal the dog and make thousands of dollars, but get discovered and Gumby and his friends have to save Lowbelly in one epic and complex adventure.

For the most part, this film really has a lot of great perks. The detail in the stop-motion clay animation really looks spectacular and mostly natural. The plot has lots of fun twists as well as quite a few references (i.e. one fighting scene contains light sabers in a ship that looks like it belongs in Star Wars) to other series that allows for a good laugh. The background soundtrack by Jerry Gerber fits the tune of the quirky cartoon well and adds a little spice to the movie as a whole. There are a few technical hiccups that can be improved on to make this film perfect. One example is the visible and obvious wires holding up some of the characters. Even though this film was made in 1995, wire removal editing tools have existed since the late 80s. At times, the animation lags quite a bit and could be sped up to make more fluid motions. Nevertheless, none of these little things ruin the watching experience, as The Gumby Movie still is a great film to watch with the family.

There are some filler scenes that don’t do much to further the plot nor add any reoccurring elements to the story. Even though they sound bad, they are enjoyable and make it feel like several separate episodes, each with a unique adventure. My favorite scene takes place towards the beginning of the runtime when Pokey looks for Gumby everywhere. On his way, he passes by a slide. At the same time, two of Pokey’s friends come out of the slide and run into him. The three turn into a big clay ball and need to go to the hospital to get un-separated. The scene has quite a few made up procedures that are both funny and realistic looking, which adds to the humor. Even though this has no purpose to the story, it still provides a few good laughs and, in general, is a fun mini-story.

The Gumby Movie can be a family movie but its main purpose is being a kid’s movie. For that reason, I recommend it for ages 8 to 18. I give The Gumby Movie 4.5 out of 5 stars because it has a few technical faults here and there, but still really provides a good quality Gumby feature film.

The Gumby Movie
By Rachael V., KIDS FIRST! Adult Juror

I always love watching anything Gumby related. I remember watching Gumby when I was younger and it was always a blast. It was always quirky and weird, which is something I can really get behind. The movie is a well done flashback to the series and has the same goofy animation and weird storylines. If this is not something that you’ve grown up with, chances are you might not like this movie as much. It’s a hard style to get into if you are not watching it for nostalgia. My children were a little confused when watching this because the animation is so old school. I personally really enjoyed it and I am 26! I recommend it for ages 6 to 12 and give it 5 out of 5 stars, fully admitting that I am a sucker for nostalgia.

Aquarium of the Pacific rehabilitates and releases rescued endangered sea turtle

IMG_4387        IMG_4388

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) asked the Aquarium of the Pacific to rehabilitate a rescued sea turtle found injured in the San Gabriel River. The green sea turtle was brought to the Aquarium for rehabilitation on Friday, September 29. The animal appears to be a sub-adult female, and it weighs 71 pounds. The Aquarium’s veterinary team removed three fishing hooks from the sea turtle’s skin and completed a medical exam on the animal. “Based on its exam, it appeared to be in good health with only minor injuries from the fishing hooks. The turtle was eating and swimming normally in its recovery pool and was quickly ready to be released,” said Dr. Lance Adams, Aquarium of the Pacific veterinarian. NMFS tagged the sea turtle to track its movements for research purposes, and the Aquarium released it today (10/5/17) into the San Gabriel River in Long Beach, where it was originally rescued. The Aquarium’s Citizen Science Sea Turtle Monitoring program has studied the urban population of sea turtles in the San Gabriel River for the past few years in conjunction with NMFS. 5 Tips to staying fit as a stay at home mom

A lot of wives decide to stay at home after conceiving children. This allows them to focus more on their child and recover fully after giving birth. Doing household chores and tending to the kids sounds like a very physical job, but it doesn’t ensure fitness. According to https://parentsneed.com, it’s important to keep a healthy weight during and after pregnancy. If you’re a stay at home mom who’s struggling to become fit, read on. Here are 5 tips to staying fit that you shouldn’t miss.

  1. Do short workouts regularly

Staying at home isn’t a lazy job. A lot of people think you have all the time in world if you’re a housewife but no. If you can’t find time to squeeze in an intense workout, stick to short workout videos that are 15 to 30 minutes long. You don’t even have to spend money. There are a lot of short workout videos you can watch online and do at home. In the morning, you can do yoga or pilates for a good stretch. If you’re looking for something intense, you can follow short HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts. They’ll surely energize you throughout the day. The goal is to be able to exercise at least 3 times a week. Make this a habit and you’ll be stronger and healthier in no time.

  1. Take your kids outside

If you find it hard to focus on scheduling a regular workout for yourself, why not involve your kids with you? Go out, take them for a walk, or teach them aerobics. It’ll be a fun activity for you and your kids. Teach them jumping jacks or play skip rope with them. Being active doesn’t have to be a solo thing. Exercising with your kids is a healthy practice. Going out exposes them to the outside environment where they can socialize, see nature, and have fun.

  1. No gym? No problem

You don’t have to be in the gym to be healthy. In the comfort of your own home, you can do your own fitness program. Invest in high-quality training shoes and comfortable workout clothes. You can also invest in fitness equipment like an exercise ball, dumbbells, and yoga mats. If your house can accommodate it, you can stretch it further and get a treadmill or a stationary bike too. There’s no stopping you from living an active lifestyle even when you’re mostly indoors.

  1. Prepare healthy foods

Eating the right foods is essential in keeping a healthy body. As they say, exercise is not enough. Proper diet and right supplementation plays a big role in strengthening the body and the immune system. Make sure your daily meals are filled with correct portions or protein, fats, and carbohydrates. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables and don’t skip on your fruits.

  1. Be disciplined

Of course, easier said than done. A lot of people get excited jump-starting their fitness regimen only to fall out of it in a matter of weeks. Consistency is key. Remember that you have to be strong, not only for your kids but also for yourself. Start slowly, if you’re not used to working out regularly, try doing it at least 2 times a week. Then when you’ve got the hang of it, strive for 3 times a week, until you can do it daily.
