Keeping Baby and Toddler Happy and Healthy with Do-It-Yourself Super Baby Food

When Ruth Yaron’s twin boys were born premature and very sick, she knew the most important thing she could do for them was to feed them the healthiest diet possible. Unhappy with the information that was available to her, Ruth decided to do her own exhaustive research on nutrition and health food.

Although she was a whiz at programming satellites for NASA, Ruth was an inexperienced cook. She utilized her skills, developed writing technical manuals, to diligently record her research of homemade, mostly organic, whole grain cereals, fruits, and vegetables, as well as the best storing and freezing methods.

The results of her phenomenal efforts are found in her remarkable first book, Super Baby Food, which has sold over half a millioncopies and is now in its 3rd edition.  Fans have asked Ruth for a cookbook with pictures of their favorite recipes and in the Super Baby Food Cookbook she has delivered.

The Super Baby Food Cookbook is fully illustrated in color and includes Ruth’s easy and complete system of baby and toddler food preparation.

The “Super Baby Food Diet” is an extremely healthy diet composed of only whole, natural foods. It is based on these major components: whole grain cereals, vegetables and fruits, yogurt and other dairy products, eggs, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Pediatricians and nutritionists agree that a semi-vegetarian diet (a lacto-ovo diet containing milk products and eggs) fulfills all of a growing baby’s nutritional requirements. Yaron provides the essentials for preparing all sorts of foods for babies and young children.

The book includes baby favorites such as avocado, carrots, peaches, and pears. Easy, delicious breakfast recipes for baby and toddler including: Cinnamon Oatmeal, Eggie in the Middle, French Toast Sticks, Whole Grain Pancakes and Easy Granola.

Healthy, delicious meal recipes for older babies and toddlers include: Easy Mac & Cheese, Tofu Lasagna, Kale/Rice Casserole, Mr. &Mrs. Sweet Potato Heads, and Avocado Soy Patties. Nutritious desserts and snacks include: Mock Ice Cream, Creamy Green Yogurt Smoothie, Coconut Milk Chia Seed Pudding, and Strawberry Pizza.

There are also recipes for making finger food snacks including Kale Chips, Tofu Fingers, Apple Smiley Face, Quick Bread Sticks, and Healthy Potato Chips. Discover a bonus of “healthy extra” tips and how to use them in recipes, including chia seeds, wheat germ sprinkles, hemp seeds, flax seeds, and more so that every bite counts.

The Super Baby Food Cookbook includes Ruth’s fans favorite Super Baby Food recipes in full color with the latest tricks and best current guidance.  Beautifully illustrated, easy-to-follow recipes include organic fruit and vegetable pureés, toddler entreés and side dishes (many the entire family will enjoy), and a variety of wholesome desserts and snacks.

Inspiring Children’s Storybook Teaches Lessons on Self-Esteem & Giving Back!

An adorable book: Shimmer the Glowworm Finds Her Glow. The story follows Shimmer, a glowworm who has a low glow and goes on a purposeful journey to find it. She discovers along the way that helping others find their glow is what makes her glow show.

For parents, teachers, caregivers and others with children from second through fifth grades on their shopping list, Shimmer the Glowworm is a gift that keeps on giving as it teaches children through the power of story how to give to others and appreciate themselves. “My ultimate goal is to spread a message of hope, inspiration and self-empowerment/self-discovery and encourage children to build strong connections with their inner-beings and with each other,” shares Herman.

Helping children to learn about the connection between social emotions and being aware or mindful of themselves and others is shown to have long-term positive benefits. According to a new study conducted by The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, by helping children “become aware of and then embody the connection between their emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations, students are better able to regulate their emotions, which then impacts things such as their behavior, stress levels, relationships, and ability to focus.”

Through Herman’s in-person engagement with the readers of her book in educational settings like libraries and elementary school classrooms, she has seen first-hand the impact the story is having. Among the book’s critics include a second grade student inArizona, whose book review highlighted the character’s journey: “I loved Shimmer the Glowworm. My favorite part was when Cray turned rainbow colors. I could show my glow I would be helping others like Shimmer did it.”

Additional reviews by parents and teachers note how the story “teaches kids at a young age to help and inspire others;” and how the book has “such a great message and my second grade class loved it too.”

To complement the children’s book, Herman also offers Show Your Glow, an uplifting song with powerfully inspirational lyrics to add a bit of music to the positive message advocated; as well as ‘ME TREEs’, created by Herman to empower and inspire children to discover their unique qualities about themselves and to find their own treasure. ME TREEs are currently being used in classrooms to teach mindfulness and awareness.

Shimmer the Glowworm Finds Her Glow is available in hardback for $19.99; in paperback for $14.99; and as an electronic book on Kindle for $6.99. The book was published by Ingram Spark and is available for sale online with Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

How to Have a Baby and Not Lose Your Sh*t:
Acclaimed Blogger – Eeh Bah Mum – Released Debut Book this past November.

How to Have a Baby and Not Lose your Shit is for women who want to start a family but are not sure quite how ‘into’ babies they are.

Appealing to new and expectant mums (as well as existing mothers who will identify with many of the experiences) this book is about enjoying and celebrating parenting but acknowledging its challenges, about how you can love your children to the moon and back but still not like having fingers that smell of poo.

It is a book for readers who want to know how looking after a toddler is, basically, like that time their mate got dumped and went on a six-month bender, or why holding a baby at a wedding and immediately wanting to swap it for a glass of champagne doesn’t mean someone is not ready for motherhood (it just means there is champagne). It answers the real questions modern women have about parenting. Can I wipe bottoms and still kick-ass? What if all the other mums are really, really boring? Is it okay to Google the answers to everything?

Written by a mum of two who thinks her children are wonderful but wishes they could be wonderful in a quieter, tidier, less annoying way, this book is a funny, insightful, and honest account of being at home with babies and small children and all the wondrous things that entails: like carrying a pot of dead bees in your handbag and trying to source ice cubes that aren’t ‘too cold’.

About Kirsty Smith:  In her career as a TV Producer working in magic & comedy Kirsty Smith introduced Russell Brand to an erotic lady wrestler, locked two presenters in a cage with 60 chickens for a week, and was made to magically appear dressed as a Morris Dancer from a giant pair of underpants. Now at home with two small children life is almost exactly the same but even funnier and with added rice cakes. She blogs at www.eehbahmum.com and has been featured across the web on many sites including Mumsnet and The Huffington Post.

This one has great chapters such as  I am never, ever going to playgroup. Ever. and Beyond the first few months. A must-read for new Moms!

Do you have a Minecraft fan in the house? This one is fun and educational too!

Learn to Program with Minecraft
New book teaches Python programming with world’s favorite game!

Minecraft is the most popular game in PC history, with hundreds of millions of players, and it’s now a gateway into the programming world.

In a novel approach to teaching programming, a new book from No Starch Press, Learn to Program with Minecraft ($29.95, Dec. 2015, 320 pp.) uses Minecraft to introduce fans to the beginner-friendly Python language. Readers learn how to build dazzling creations and unlock a whole new realm of Minecraft, all while learning practical programming skills.

This hands-on approach to programming is filled with fun, step-by-step directions designed to make things clear for readers of all ages and experience levels.

Author Craig Richardson explains his book’s unique approach this way: “My book makes learning to program accessible and engaging for people of all ages. Parents and teachers know how valuable it is to learn how to program, but add the fun and creativity of Minecraft while giving your player superpowers, and who can resist? Learn to Program with Minecraft shows readers how to take control of Minecraft with programming, and it’s really exciting for kids to see a pyramid or palace appear in their Minecraft world out of nothing more than a few lines of code.”

Readers of Learn to Program with Minecraft embark on a series of interactive and engaging missions as they learn how to:

  • Teleport their players using variables
  • Create palaces, pillars, pyramids, and pixel art using for loops
  • Stack blocks and build spectacular spires in record time with math
  • Unlock the chat feature and write secret messages to their friends
  • Blast craters, open secret passages, and cast spells to transform blocks
  • Duplicate entire villages, castles, and acres of Minecraft countryside

“Think of it this way,” says No Starch Press founder Bill Pollock. “Learn to Program with Minecraftis the ideal alternative to those cost-prohibitive coding camps. Kids who read this book will pick up valuable programming skills and they won’t have to hide their favorite game behind a busy screen.” According to Pollock, “No Starch Press will never be a billion dollar startup ‘unicorn,’ but we’ll still change the world by creating books that open doors for kids everywhere.”

For parents looking to get kids interested in coding, and for Minecraft fans of any age, this hands-on guide is the perfect introduction to programming. The code in this book will run on Mac, Windows, and Raspberry Pi.

I checked this one out and highly recommend for kids wanting to learn code. It is easy to understand and not too complex. I also think kids that really like Minecraft will love this book!

Learn to Program with Minecraft is available now in bookstores everywhere.

Simon Youth Foundation Seeks Local OC and LA Applicants for College Scholarships

unnamed

This year, living near Brea Mall or The Shops at Mission Viejo in Orange County, or Del Amo Fashion Center, The Shops at Montebello or Camarillo Premium Outlets in the Los Angeles vicinity could help a graduating senior pay for college. Simon Youth Foundation, a national nonprofit that provides educational opportunities for at-risk high school students, has begun looking for a graduating senior who lives within fifty miles of Brea Mall, The Shops at Mission Viejo, Del Amo Fashion Center, The Shops at Montebello and Camarillo Premium Outlets.

Each year, Simon Youth Community Scholarships are awarded in every community across the country that is home to Simon, Mills, or Premium Outlets malls. The application period has begun and ends on March 1, 2016.

Students can apply online by visiting syf.org/scholarships.

Any student who will be graduating in the class of 2016 and lives within 50 miles of a Simon Malls property is eligible. Recipients will receive up to $1,500 to enroll in an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.

In addition, ten regional awards called “Awards of Excellence” will be given to top candidates. The regions eligible are Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Miami, New York, Orange County (CA), Orlando, and Seattle/Tacoma. Students from these areas will have the opportunity to receive a $10,000 award ($2,500 for up to four years).

SYF will also award 25 scholarships to students graduating in the class of 2016 who live within 50 miles of any Premium Outlets mall nationwide, including Camarillo Premium Outlets. No more than one scholarship will be awarded per property. Recipients will receive up to $1,500 to enroll in an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.

In addition, an “Award of Excellence” will be given to the top candidate from among the scholarship applicants that represent the nationwide Premium Outlets locations. That student will receive a $10,000 award ($2,500 for up to four years).

In 2015, the Simon Youth Foundation awarded $1.2 million to 300 students nationwide.

“The cost of college continues to rise, and SYF is proud to partner with Brea Mall and The Shops at Mission Viejo in Orange County, and Del Amo Fashion Center, The Shops at Montebello and Camarillo Premium Outlets in Los Angeles to award scholarships that will remove some of the financial obstacles that could otherwise prevent a student from achieving the dream of a college education,” said Michael Durnil, SYF President and CEO.

The 2016 SYF Community Scholarship recipients will be selected by International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc. (ISTS), a third-party administrator. Students are selected based on a variety of criteria, including financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Those students who are the first in their family to pursue a post secondary education will also be given close consideration.

Recipients will be notified in May.
