Whole Foods Market for more Natural Beauty Products!

unnamed (1)

Whole Foods Market kicked off its inaugural “Beauty Week,” March 18 through 24, to celebrate all things beauty related. I don’t know if you made a visit to your local store, but I know I did! During “Beauty Week,” all Whole Foods Market locations offered a limited edition “Hello, Beauty!” bag for $18 (valued at $60). This was a Must-Buy!

Recently, I participated in a product swap challenge and I had a lot of fun with this one! Basically, I had to select 5 items at Whole Foods to swap out the conventional beauty items that I use. The results? I have a new favorite body lotion and a new favorite lip balm! I also found more natural body soap and they smell so good! My favorite is Good Soap in a Sunshine fragrance and I never knew that Sunshine smelled so good! I also usually use some really good smelling bubble baths and I know they aren’t the most natural. I swapped out with natural Sea Salt souffle bath salts in a lavender scent. I also had my son try out some Good Soap in a chocolate scent and I love that this is good for his dryer skin. But, back to my two favorites! The Mineral Fusion Lotion in Waterstone and the WFM Organic Lip Balm in Sweet Vanilla are truly beauty Must-Buys! I love that the Mineral Fusion body lotion is all-natural and leaves my skin feeling hydrated. The lip balm is great for chapped lips and is so affordable! It’s price? $1.99!

I loved my visit too! The customer service is always so helpful and friendly! (I went the Torrance location). I also discovered that there will be a really cool lip balm (CHOCOLATE!) later this month. I can’t wait to go! Check your local Whole Foods Market to see what fun natural beauty making classes they may offer.

C0232C72-1D9D-46BA-AE3E-1EEB48817EBD

Did you know that April is “National Financial Literacy Month” and a great opportunity to put teaching children of all ages about the basics of finance at the top of the list!

I have to admit that I was not aware of this so was quite interested to find out this info and to be able to share with you!

As Mr. Buffett said in a Forbes interview, “It’s never too early to help kids understand about money. Whether it’s understanding the cost of the new toy they want, or the value of saving money. Kids are exposed to money matters from a very young age, so why not help them understand it and develop healthy habits early on?”

Produced for kids 6–11, Secret Millionaires Club engages kids with basic lessons in business and imparts healthy habits from an early age. In the series, Warren Buffett is a mentor to a group of kids, helping them learn about the “business of life” through a series of adventures. Every episode offers valuable life lessons, and as Mr. Buffett reminds the kids at the end of every episode, “the best investment you can make is an investment in yourself!”

Mr. Buffett’s celebrity friends appear as special guests in episodes of Secret Millionaires Club, including Jay Z, Bill Gates, Shaquille O’Neal, Gisele Bündchen, Kelly Rowland, Nick Cannon and others who impart their own positive lessons.

Secret Millionaires Club with Shaquille O'Neal

I received a copy of the DVD and love the positive lessons and I also think that kids ages 6+ will enjoy seeing the celebrity friends mentioned above. It is fun and educational and I highly recommend!

There are many ways to learn and enjoy Secret Millionaires Club with your children:

Secret Millionaires Club Volumes 1 & 2 are available on DVD from Cinedigm.

Volume 1 episodes include: Be Cool to your School, Neither a Borrower nor a Lender Be, Dude, When Pigs Fly, The Cost of Giving, Elena’s Shaqtastic Adventure (featuring Shaquille O’Neal), Avast Ye Downloads. Plus five additional animated shorts.

Volume 2 episodes include: Down and Out in Beijing, Listen to the Music, Paranormally We Don’t Do This Kind of Thing, The Final Financial Fronteir, Sweeeet!, Just Say Snow. Plus five additional animated shorts.

AND, The book Secret Millionaires Club: Warren Buffett’s 26 Secrets to Success in the Business of Life ($24.95) by Amy Heyward and Andy Heyward, co-authors and co-executive producers on the animated series, is available at retail and online at Amazon.com.  Thebook features all of the same lessons featured in the animated series. Chapters include, “Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes;” “Love What You Do;” “Protect Your Reputation;” “If You Fail, Try Again;” Confidence Comes With Understanding,” and many other lessons from Mr. Buffett, which he credits for his own success in life.

The Secret Millionaires Club Learn & Earn program, available at www.smckids.com, teaches financial literacy and entrepreneurship through activities for the classroom, home, and other settings where students and families learn. It was developed to extend the lessons of the Secret Millionaires Club webisodes and prime-time TV specials, both of which feature Warren Buffett. Now, classrooms, homes, and learning settings across the country can benefit from the knowledge of this financial guru and his fictional friends!

We have teamed up for a Giveaway! Two winners will win a Secret Millionaires Club, Volume 1 DVD (SRP: $14.93) To enter, simply leave a tip on how to teach young children about saving money. Deadline to enter is April 14th, 2015 at noon PST. Two winners will randomly be selected via Random.org.

Woman in Gold – A Compelling Film Based on a True Story

WomaninGold

This film stars Helen Mirren as Maria Altmann, an octogenarian Jewish refugee, who takes on the government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family. KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Susana H. comments, “Personally, it has everything I’m looking for – a little bit of action and seriousness and actually has somewhat to do with history, the Holocaust to be exact.” Willie J. adds, “I was completely invested. The story is enough to take my heart, for I can easily empathize. Then, there is the performance of Helen Mirren to wrench your heart.” See their full reviews below.

Woman In Gold

Woman in Gold, an intriguing and true-life story, is excellent. Personally, it has everything I’m looking for – a little bit of action and seriousness and actually has somewhat to do with history, the Holocaust to be exact. There are very strong characters to play out the story including Rondol Schoenberg or Randy (Ryan Reynolds) and Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), which of course, has to be my favorite character.  Even for an older woman, she is so sassy and confident, which I reminded me of myself. What really caught my attention is the writer and director’s use of flashbacks throughout the entire movie because we are looking into Maria’s past life during the Holocaust. Most of the time, flashbacks in parts of movies can be confusing.  It’s almost as if they are telling two completely different stories at once. In this case, it’s done very well.

Woman in Gold is a true story based on Maria Altmann’s experience with the Nazi’s cruelty. About 60 years after Maria leaves Vienna, she begins her quest to regain one of her dearest family possessions, which have been taken away by the Nazis.  Amongst them is a famous painting entitled Woman In Gold, hence the name of the movie. She meets an untrained, young lawyer and together they fight for what rightfully belongs to Maria. Along their path, they are faced with addressing the Austrian government, which is too stubborn to notice what is right from wrong and the U.S. Supreme Court. Throughout her journey she constantly is reminded of her past.

My favorite part definitely has to be from one of the flashbacks. We see the younger Maria and he husband escaping the Nazis and being chased all over town. If you know me, you know I like a bit of action in my movies. They are running to catch a plane to leave Austria. As all of this is taking place, of course, I am holding my breath until they get away and dying to scream when the Nazi officers are right behind them.

The message of this film is to always fight for what you believe is right and never give up. Maria knows those paintings belong to her family and have been forcefully taken away. She knows she has to get them back for the sake of her family’s honor and she does so. She has some help along the way but the motivation is all from her. She will fight to the end to secure the paintings along with her trusted partner by her side and, even though she might give up, Randy is there to support her.

I recommend this movie for people of ages 13 to 18 because it is a serious movie and uses a bit of bad language here and there. I give this excellent movie 5, out of 5 stars due to the strong actors and characters and interesting plot. It opens in theaters nationwide April 1.

Woman in Gold

By Willie Jones, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 16

Who would have known The Green Lantern and Queen Elizabeth would make such a touching pair? Of course I’m talking about characters that Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren have played. They have an unexpectedly heartwarming chemistry in the new film, Woman in Gold.

Woman in Gold is about the quest of a lawyer named Randol and an heir named Maria attempting to get back a painting that belongs to Maria. The painting is of Maria’s aunt and was stolen by the Nazis after they killed Maria’s family and Maria fled.

I was completely invested. The story is enough to take my heart, for I can easily empathize. Then, there is the performance of Helen Mirren to wrench your heart. Don’t get me wrong. Ryan Reynolds has one of the best scenes in the film and gives one of his finest performances ever (if not his best). But, it is Helen Mirren who makes this movie. She’s gone from a French accent (The Hundred Foot Journey) to an Austrian accent for this film. In the past, her British accent hasn’t been too bad either … (yes, that is a joke).

The passion and vulnerability with which Dame Mirren plays Maria had me holding back tears. She’s so emotionally present and emotionally versatile. She’ll make you laugh or cry or brim with anger, but she always delivers.

The sentiment of the film must also be attributed to director Simon Curtis who makes his directorial debut with this film. He is a very visual director. He tells the story in imagery and pictures. Curtis has an amazing feel for timing. When he cuts to a flashback, the length of the flashback, how he ties it into the main plot, he does with finesse.

The flashback scenes, by the way, are stunning. The sepia/golden cinematography is gorgeous to look at and is very intelligent. It certainly adds an element of nostalgia to the story that reveals Maria’s past and the emotion of her story.

Woman in Gold is a fantastic directorial debut for Simon Curtis. The film touches you deeper than you think it might and the journey is one you won’t regret. For that reason, I give Woman in Gold 4.5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it for ages 13 to 18. It is playing in theaters now so don’t miss it.

Nike Golf Film “Ripple” Features Tiger and Rory

unnamed (1)

Extraordinary athletes serve as idols to the next generation. Their greatness inspires, and before long the inspired have in turn become role models themselves. Tiger Woods idolized Jack Nicklaus. Rory McIlroy looked up to Tiger Woods. And now, Woods and McIlroy compete side by side as they fuel the dreams of sport’s future greats. It’s a ripple effect.

In that vein, Nike Golf has created a new film, “Ripple,” that captures the powerful influence of Woods on a young McIlroy. “Ripple” is a story of relentless pursuit by two remarkable athletes, Woods and McIlroy, and their respective paths to greatness.

Produced in one- and two-minute versions, the film follows the inspirational journey of McIlroy growing up, captivated by Woods’s awe-inspiring performances, his strokes of genius, his athleticism and his swing. Seeing fist pump after fist pump, victory after victory, and with posters of Woods in his room, the film shows McIlroy dreaming of one day competing against Woods — symbolic of the dream held by many young golfers around the world.

“As a kid, I looked up to Tiger,” said McIlroy, who hit a 40-yard drive at the age of just two. When I first saw him on TV, I remember being completely enamored by the energy he brought to the sport. His will to win. His determination. His fight.”

“I’ve been in that same situation,” said Woods. “Growing up, Jack was my idol. My first recollection of The Masters was 1986, when Jack won. I remember him making a putt at 17 and lifting that putter up. Fourteen years later at the 2000 PGA Championship, I got to play with and against him – someone I looked up to.”

The film begins with a reenactment of a young McIlroy intensely watching Woods win his first U.S. Amateur Championship on TV in 1994. A few years later, still from his hometown in Holywood, Northern Ireland, McIlroy witnessed Woods’s electrifying performance of winning his first Masters title by an astounding 12 shots. As the film progresses, we see McIlroy emulating Woods’s work ethic, perfecting his game in the rain, working on his putting stroke on a putting green at his house (filmed at his actual childhood home), with his mother Rosie and father Gerry supporting him all the way.

The film culminates with the two professionals competing against each other, walking side by side down the fairway –inspiration for who’s next.

“It’s been an incredible journey for me, going from massive fan to competitor,” said McIlroy. “To think that not too long ago I was that little boy watching him on TV to where I am now. It’s been a cool journey and I’m very lucky I get to compete with and against him, because he inspired me as a kid and he inspires me now. He’s the best player I’ve ever seen.”

“It’s neat because I’ve been able to be a part of different generations of competitors. Now I’m competing against the younger ones. It helps me train a little harder, because these guys are athletic,” said Woods.

Created in partnership with Wieden + Kennedy, the film has two versions – a one-and two-minute spot airing on ESPN and The Golf Channel.  The film director is Steve Rogers of Wieden + Kennedy and the music “Nuvole Bianche,” by Ludovico Einaudi.

Furious 7 – An Explosively Fun Movie!

Furious7

Next up in the Fast & Furious series is Furious 7 starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson. Dominic Toretto and his crew thought they left the criminal mercenary life behind but now, Deckard Shaw seeks revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for the death of his brother. KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Gerry O. comments, “This action-packed series returns with another intense and fantastic film and the only way to describe it is amazing – loaded with awesome looking cars, adventures and action scenes. You will not be bored once in its entire 137 minutes.” Brandon C. adds, “The action is fantastic, as director James Wan and editor Christian Wagner have created something spectacular for the eyes.” See their full reviews below.

Furious 7

Reviewed by Gerry O., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 13

This action-packed series returns with another intense and fantastic film and the only way to describe it is amazing –loaded with awesome looking cars, adventures and action scenes. You will not be bored once in its entire 137 minutes. Furious 7, like all the other Fast and Furious films, beats its predecessor.

There is much more to this movie than just action scenes. There is a story with morals and family, for the group is growing up. Nothing can stop that. They are having kids and starting a family. There is also (like the other Fast and the Furious films) some comedy but, not to the point where you don’t take the action seriously. All together, it is an adventure.

The story begins when the crew is separated and starting their own lives with jobs, kids and other normal day-to-day things.  However, they must stop their peaceful lives (and some are happy about that) when a man named Deckard Shaw seeks revenge for the death of his brother who was a mercenary. So the crew is forced to take him down. Full of cars, action and fantastic rock songs, it is truly a fast and furious experience.

This film is fantastic. Something I have to mention is Paul Walker’s job. He played Brian O’Conner who dies in a tragic accident mid-filming. Amazingly, directors and producers were able to use the magic of editing, CGI and doubles. In some scenes, they use Paul’s brothers as doubles, putting Paul’s face onto the brothers via CGI. They do it so well I hardly even noticed the difference and it felt great to see him as part of the movie and being remembered. The cars are as awesome and as fast as ever with cars ranging from a minivan (yes, a minivan) to a 3.4 million dollar super car that drives through three skyscrapers. This is the longest Fast and the Furious film yet at over two hours. However, I think the length is perfect for this is a massive story to tell. The acting is phenomenal. Jason Statham (Dekard Shaw) plays a great bad guy. I also have to mention how they wrap everything together with transitions that are just amazing, camera shots that are breathtaking and directing that is spot on. It wraps up to be a perfect action packed and fast-paced movie.

My favorite scene is when they are trying to get a program, which hacks into anything and tracks someone and can find anything or anyone on Earth in less than an hour. However the program is hidden inside the mechanics of a Lykan Hyper-sport, which is a Middle Eastern car – also considered a super car for its ridiculous speed. This specific model is located in the penthouse of a prince who lives in a tall building with two other towers right next to it. They get the car while a party is going on. However, it’s not very sneaky. They have to flee but the only way is out of the building. They drive the car through two of the skyscrapers and jump out at the third one while the car plummets to its destruction. I love this scene because it’s intense, action packed, and just plain awesome.

This film is definitely meant for adults. There are adult related jokes, intense action packed scenes, and situations not suitable for younger children. I recommend it for ages 13 to 18. I also give it 5 out of 5 stars for a job very well done. Something I liked was how, at the end, the filmmakers surprised us by showing about five minutes of scenes with Paul’s character, Conner, as a memorial and also dedicated the entire film to him.

I would like to dedicate my review to Paul as well. Paul, you are missed and the Furious team is never going to be the same without you. Hope you found peace and are racing the coolest cars up there.

Furious 7 –

By Brandon Cela, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 16

April 2, 2015

Furious 7 is the seventh installment of the Fast and the Furious movie series. This movie is also the last movie to feature leading actor Paul Walker who died last year in a car crash. The movie pays homage to Paul at the end of the movie by having a montage of different clips from the original Fast and the Furious movies with Paul Walker, ultimately leading up to a final message at the end of the movie simply saying, “For Paul.”

Furious 7 is an action-packed fun movie with B+ actors all around. It is the perfect summer blockbuster that is released pre-summer. The movie revolves around Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) as he and his crew are hunted down by an angry Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). Shaw is the brother of Owen Shaw from Fast and Furious 6, who was defeated by Dominic and his crew.

There is an enormous amount of talent in this movie from Dwayne Johnson playing Luke Hobbs, to Paul Walker playing Brian O’Connor, to Michelle Rodriguez playing Letty Ortiz. Another great thing about this movie is that there is no one location for the movie, as the movie takes place in Los Angeles, London and even in the Middle East.

The action is fantastic, as director James Wan and editor Christian Wagner have created something spectacular for the eyes. Also, the music is superb throughout the entire movie. Musical director Brian Tyler selects great music applicable to every scene and every action, which gives everything a great and awesome flow. I loved seeing Dwayne Johnson perform the Rock Bottom in one of his scenes against Jason Statham. Also, Ronda Rousey’s appearance is a personal highlight.

However, there are some big lowlights in Furious 7. The dialogue could use some improvement. The story gets stuck due to the dialogue and the actors seem to just throw out one-liners over and over again to fill up time. Also, the fights are too unrealistic. After every brutal fight, the characters have only small bumps and a little bit of blood on their faces, which is completely unrealistic.

Overall, this movie is intended for dudes. I recommend it for guys age 13 to 18 because of how it portrays women, includes lots of cars and lots of fighting.
