Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site announces an afternoon of free and good old-fashioned fun in a workshop for children held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 called Creation Station: “Cool Blues.” The workshop is perfect for children ages 6-10 years old. It is also a great opportunity for children to create unique crafts and participate in a historically themed program. Families can choose to drop in and participate anytime between 1-4 p.m. No reservations required. Creation station workshops are held rain or shine.

“Cool Blues,” welcomes and celebrates the cool blue skies, right after fresh spring rain. Children can choose from a selection of art supplies to make photo prints, keepsake boxes, bird mobiles and more. In addition to participating in the “Cool Blues” hands-on activities, visitors can choose to take a free house tour or garden tour. Upcoming creation station workshops include “Sunny Yellow” on May 4, and “Rainbow Surprise” on June 1.

The Rancho is located at 4600 Virginia Road in Long Beach, northwest of the intersection of Long Beach Boulevard and San Antonio Drive. Free public tours are offered Wednesday-Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Built in 1844, the adobe home and grounds of Rancho Los Cerritos echo with the rich history of Spanish, Mexican, and American California and with the families who helped transform Southern California from its ranching beginnings to the modern and urban society it is today. The two-story Monterey-style adobe is primarily furnished to reflect occupants and lifestyles from the 1860s-1880s. The site, a National, State and Long Beach Historic Landmark, also includes historic gardens and a research library and archives. Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site is a public museum open for tours, programs, and events. It is owned by the City of Long Beach and operated through the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine. 2 RED HENS STUDIO Collection Of Vintage Chic Inspired Products For Modern Moms

2RedHens_HR

Red Holliday Studios, LLC  introduces the 2 Red Hens Studio collection offering a range of vintage chic inspired products for modern mamas from designer Lori Holliday, founder of 2 Red Hens Studio.  The 2 Red Hens Collection makes a statement with its distinctive look, innovative and functional items, and select beautifully handcrafted one-of-a-kind pieces using repurposed material.

The new collection features diaper bags, including a limited edition series, the Toy Nanny, an innovative mat that keeps babies and their toys in one place, shopping cart nests, bibs and other accessories. Uniquely designed dolls are also included.

Inspiration for the collection stems from “Mama Hen” Holliday’s love of life and family. As number 13 in a family of 14 children, Holliday grew up on a cotton farm near Phoenix and learned the value of craftsmanship, repurposing and enhancing the beauty of all things old. She went on to become a mechanical engineer only to discover her calling for design in 2003 after buying a sewing machine to make a diaper bag.

Today, the mother of two is enjoying success as the head of a company offering unique and whimsical apparel, accessories and dolls sold in boutiques across the United States and as far away as Japan and the United Kingdom. Holliday also started Make & Mingle, a club she refers to as “Home Ec for Big Girls,” and is founder of Have Pearl Vaccine, or HPV, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting cervical cancer, a disease which Holliday has personally battled multiple times and survived.  A portion of proceeds from 2 Red Hens and Make & Mingle go to HVP.

“My friends refer to me as a domestic goddess (maybe), crafter extraordinaire (definitely) and the queen of collecting. All I know is that I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember,” said Holliday. “Every day is a gift to me and I find my inspiration for 2 Red Hens everywhere.”

A new musical storybook app for the iPad, Mibblio, has just launched their first interactive app! Now kids can read, sing, learn and play music all at the same time! My son and I had the opportunity to check out this fun app and my son loved the musical aspect of it and all the different musical instruments to choose from. Inside Mibblio is a world of beautiful mibblets- illustrated story-songs that invite children to read, sing and jam while understanding the layers of developing music targeted to children ages 3-8, kids can listen to and build upon a song while simultaneously having fun and improving reading skills.

There are 9 different mibblets to choose from and the first one is free. My son’s favorites are “Wheels on the Bus” and “On Top Of Spaghetti.”  I love the different  mix of classic songs and that there are also new, instant classics like “Monkey Jamboree.” They are written, illustrated, sung and performed by accomplished artists such as Grammy-nominated mandolinist, Andy Statman and Grammy-winning drummer Marty Beller.
